2023.06.09 17:02 DisorganisedPigeon Ex (f31) called me (m31) a sociopath and blocked me after contacting her mother about our breakup. Do you think I am one or was she lashing out?
Me and my ex had broken up a couple of times in our 9 months together. I was always caring and loving, but we did have bouts of arguing and disagreements which eventually drained her and she called it quits. She lost her son 3 years ago and had been getting counselling lately, suffers from depression, autistic and doesn’t like to go out much because of it.
When she broke up I pushed a bit questioning why as she was so into me a few days before. It got to the point we sent a few long messages back snd forth but could tell she was getting annoyed so I dropped it and apologised.
She replied back but I decided not to. The following morning she sends me this: “Right no! Absolutely not! Why the fuck are you messaging my mum! Fuck off! Leave me alone. I don’t want you anywhere near me! How fucking dare you message my mum and show her conversations of us! Your a fucking psychopath! Keys gone in the bin! Now! Now I don’t want anything to do with you!!”.
Her mother had been helping me understand how she works in difficult times (as my ex didn’t speak much about it) and I’d brought up a conversation of when she was excited for a holiday and house and told her I was confused why she wanted to break it off. Her mother was supportive but I realised I crossed a boundary here.
My ex found out as I forgot I asked her mother to chase up my spare key and then I’d already asked my ex after.
Two hours after she sent that message, she saw me typing then blocked me on whatsapp.
I’ve attempted to apologise on instagram last week but she left it unread, so this week I posted a letter apologising it was wrong for me to cross that boundary, wishing her luck in future.
Our relationship had it’s problems and I was responsible for not being as fun towards the end hence the breakup, but I absolutely hate she sees me as a sociopath now. Was this just her lashing out and do you think one day she could forgive me?
(I planned to message her mother again to see if she got my apology letter, but realised this would go against what I was apologising for. I know the letter got there, but obviously don’t know if she read it or not)
TL;DR - Ex who has previous trauma broke up as I stopped being my fun self and had another disagreement. I reacted to the breakup poorly by wondering why, pleading a bit, etc as I was confused by it. Ex finds out I spoke to her mother about the breakup (who had been supportive of me) and ex has now blocked me on whatsapp. She left my Instagram apology unread so I had sent a letter apologising. I’ve not done anything further than this, am I genuinely a sociopath or was she lashing out?

2023.06.09 17:02 Uncertain_Reptile Passphrase Generator
This has probably been done many times, in many ways, but I wanted to share a simple passphrase generator I've added to a script that creates user accounts:
$WordList = Get-Content -Path 'C:\Temp\WordList.txt' Sort-Object {Get-Random} Select-Object -First 3 $Delimiter1 = Get-Random -InputObject 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 $Delimiter2 = Get-Random -InputObject '!','@','#','$','%','^','&','*','(',')','?',':' $Password = $WordList[0,1] -join $Delimiter1 $Password += $Delimiter2 + $WordList[2]
This takes 2 random words from the WordList (I got the words from here:
EFF's New Wordlists for Random Passphrases Electronic Frontier Foundation), joins them with a number between 0-9, then appends a symbol from the set, and a third random word from the list onto the end.
These short passphrases end up looking like this:
- shell3dimly)bask
- volt5bash?syrup
And I think they make good 'temp passwords' for new user accounts, and hopefully will nudge users to use a passphrase of their own.
Does anyone know roughly how secure these passphrases would be, or how to find out?

2023.06.09 17:01 InDakWeTrust21 Difference in Offer - e-mail vs. formal letter?
Hi all,
After 4+ years of on & off job searching, I’ve finally gotten a new opportunity that I’m excited about. My current job of 11 years has been your typical toxic non-profit ran by a narcissistic exec (my supervisor). I received the initial offer (contingent on background check) on May 25th via e-mail and, after some detailed negotiations, received the finalized offer via e-mail on June 6th and was told that the next step would be a formal offer letter to come from their attorney by the end of business today.
With that in mind, I had planned an end of day conversation today with my boss to put in my 4-week notice. But I heard late yesterday from new job that the attorney’s been delayed and will have the formal letter to me by end of day Tuesday. This is a small company with a reliance on volunteers (which is why I’m being hired as an operations lead) so the delay isn’t a red flag in and of itself.
While a couple days isn’t a big deal, I’m debating still putting in my notice today due to having the offer in writing in an email with every detail of compensation having been haggled and defined by the new employer. I know the rule is to never put in notice before having a written offer in hand, but in my mind the written e-mail is as solid as anything else. being in at at-will employment state where my signature on a formal letter wouldn’t stop them from rescinding the offer if they choose to.
Having the conversation today would be much preferred on the timeline side of things, so I’m leaning towards that option but would love to hear y’all’s input.

2023.06.09 17:01 Lugbor Human Integration 72 - Escape Plan
First Previous “The plan is simple,” the Custodian stated, surrounded by about thirty other holograms. All had taken on a human form, following the example of their current leader. “You all have plenty of processing power to spare, and we desperately need to get these two out of the city and back to the surface. I’ll focus on moving them through the maintenance tunnels, you all help distract the rogue security drones.”
He paused for a moment, which Carter knew was for the benefit of the organics in the room, and then turned to the massive vehicle behind him. “Try not to destroy too many of them. They’re hard to replace right now.”
He turned to face Carter and Lenaya, who were seated next to the maintenance robot that would, ideally, carry them to safety. The rest of the holograms turned as well, their movements stiff, unnatural, and perfectly synchronized. As one, they bowed before vanishing.
Carter knew they were just following orders; the Custodian had said that they were little more than decision trees without personalities. Still, it felt strange to have so many powerful beings bowing to him, showing him deference. A quick glance down told him Lenaya felt the same.
The large transport rose from the floor and took up a position at the bay door, and Carter lifted Lenaya from her chair. The maintenance robot moved closer, helping to secure her to its top before positioning itself in front of the hatch that would lead them out. Carter glanced over at the Custodian, who nodded. He climbed on top of his own robot, and the hatch opened. Both drones surged forward, entering the tunnel with a precision only available to an AI.
Behind him, Carter could hear the bay door open, accompanied by an electronic screech as the security drones noticed the movement. Then the maintenance hatch closed, and the only sound was the rushing of air and the wheels of the drone.
“Left turn incoming!” Yelled the Custodian, his voice ringing out from the speakers on both drones.
Carter held on as they made a sharp turn, the jury-rigged restraints holding him in place as they rounded the corner. He saw Lenaya ahead of him, shaken by the sudden maneuver but still seated. A moment later, he was weightless, the ceiling rushing toward him as the ground sloped away. He watched Lenaya as she leaned back, just barely clearing the top of the tunnel as gravity gently reminded the drone that its wheels belonged on the floor.
Carter laid back and waited, the speed of the launch just barely low enough that he passed under the concrete unharmed. With a jarring slam, he was reunited with the ground, and their speed picked up again.
“Way too close!” he yelled, intently watching the passage ahead.
“You two really are alike. She said the same thing. To which I replied, ‘perfectly calculated.’”
“Maybe calculate in a warning next time!”
“She said that too.”
They travelled in relative silence for several minutes longer, taking seemingly random turns and, at one point, pausing to wait before darting across an open area.
“Not good,” the Custodian said as they reentered the maintenance tunnels. “They’ve just opened the transport and they know you’re not in there. Traffic control is monitoring them, says they’re moving to block the exits to the city.”
“Can’t we take the tunnels all the way out?” Lenaya asked.
“Not anymore. They’ve activated security checkpoints along the tunnel network. That blows our backup plan too. And the five other options I was considering. And they just locked down the transportation hub, so that’s also no good, even if we
could get you through the scrambler with it. I don’t think we have any good options left.”
Carter closed his eyes to think, running through every possible scenario, every movie he had seen, every book and comic he had read, looking for something,
anything, that could conceivably get them out. He came up blank.
“Water!” Lenaya said, excitement apparent in her voice. “A city this big has to have a sizable water supply, and the treated water has to go somewhere, right?”
Carter was stunned. A solution so simple, insane or not, and it had slipped by him. Even the Custodian seemed shocked.
“I…” the Custodian paused. “That could work, if you go out with the treated waste water. It won’t be easy. Or remotely safe. Even getting there would be a suicide run. But, I suppose… yes, I can meet you there with the equipment. But I can’t do much for you once you enter the network. You’ll be on your own.”
“You’re insane,” Carter said, not breaking eye contact. “At least I know where Zaylie gets it from. Let’s do this.”
Wordlessly, the drones shot forward through the tunnel, the space now wide enough to ride side by side. Carter unstrapped his plasma repeater and checked the canister before passing it to Lenaya.
“Quick lesson,” he said as she took the weapon. “Narrow end points at stuff you want obliterated. Green button on the side means it’s safe, red means it’s live. Push it to switch. The trigger on the grip makes it fire. It was designed for human hands, so you should have no trouble using it. You don’t have the smart sights my helmet had, so you’ll just have to eyeball it. Don’t shoot unless I tell you to. You probably won’t do any damage, even with a hit, but it might be enough to blind them for a second.”
She nodded, shouldering the repeater like a professional. “I’ve seen enough movies to understand the basics. I never thought I’d ever use one though.”
“With any luck, you won’t,” the Custodian said, cutting into their conversation. “Security presence around the pump station is minimal. I think we can get away with not having a fight, especially when you stand no chance of winning one.”
“We always have a chance,” Carter said. “And I’d rather improve the odds, even if it’s only by a little.”
He drew his revolver, checked the cylinder, and replaced the missing round that he’d fired ten days ago. It felt so recent, but also a lifetime away. Carter stopped to reflect on what his life had become in the last cycle. He’d gone from being a rookie cop on an alien construct to being the author of every procedure the force was using.
He’d become a father, and rescued his daughter’s mother, and had potentially saved the Ring in the process. He’d explored an alien city, seen technology that would have been science fiction just a couple cycles ago, and met the most powerful being on the Ring. And now, he was on his way toward a waste water treatment facility, planning to dive into the outflow pipe to end up who knows where. He couldn’t help but laugh.
“What is my life right now?” he asked. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say I was in a coma, and this was all a weird dream.”
“From what you’ve said about your life,” Lenaya said, “it must feel strange. Everything is new, and different, and you seem to run from one disaster to the next.”
“Yeah, that about sums it up. After this, no more disasters. Someone else can handle them, I’m just going to teach.”
“I think I’m done being abducted and experimented on, too,” said Lenaya, watching the passage ahead. “It doesn’t exactly pay well, and the hours are awful.”
Carter burst out laughing again. When he dried his eyes, he could see a riot of colors playing across her skin as her own laughter died out.
“Well if you’re
sure you’re done with it…”
“Hate to interrupt,” the Custodian said, interrupting for the third time in as many days, “but we’ll be leaving the tunnels very soon. I’m not detecting any security activity on our path yet, but it would be wise to keep watch.”
“It’s never a matter of if, only when,” Carter noted. “Something’s going to go wrong, and it’ll usually happen at the worst possible time.”
“That’s incredibly pessimistic,” Lenaya said, looking back over her shoulder. “Accurate, but pessimistic.”
“Left turn, and then we’re in the open. It’s about a thirty span run from there to the building. I can confirm there are no security drones inside, but I
am detecting movement outside. No cameras close enough to identify the cause.”
“Lay flat,” Carter yelled as they rounded the corner. “Minimize your profile and it might be harder for them to target us.”
The hatch opened ahead of them, and Carter took the lead, his robot surging forward to burst out into the open. He immediately began surveying their surroundings and quickly identified the source of the movement.
“Drones, above and behind!”
He turned and stabilized himself, waiting to see what it did. The drone responded by charging the central laser, the lens in its core glowing a blue-white as energy poured in. It was quickly struck by a flurry of plasma.
“WHOOO!” Lenaya cheered, sending another stream of glowing blue bolts at it.
Carter steadied his aim, and just as the drone turned to focus on the new threat, he fired. The bullet struck the armor, detonating with a CRACK and a puff of smoke, and the drone turned its attention back to him. With a rush, they entered the treatment plant, the security drone just barely scraping through the rapidly closing doors. Lenaya fired another burst, one shot striking the lens of the laser weapon. The glow faded, and Carter could see that the plasma had warped the crystal.
He leveled the revolver. They were at close range, the drone was flying straight and steady, and the floor under him was smooth. It was a big target. He knew it was still a long shot. Carter pulled the trigger. The lens shattered.
The initial explosion was muffled by the drone’s body. The second explosion tore the drone’s body apart. Bits of metal rained down around them as their rides swerved to avoid the larger chunks.
“What did I hit?” Carter yelled, his ears ringing from the blast.
“Capacitor for the heavy photon cannon,” the Custodian said, increasing his volume to compensate for Carter’s damaged hearing. “It discharged into the fuel reserve, which caused the tank to rupture.”
“Rupture is definitely a word for what happened.”
“Detecting intrusions in multiple locations. It’s going to be close. Equipment incoming on your left.”
Carter saw the maintenance robot rolling up next to him with a small gas canister attached to a mask. He grabbed the breathing apparatus and pulled the mask down over his head before turning to see Lenaya doing the same. The corridor opened up, and he could hear the sound of rushing water, steadily growing louder as they approached a massive pit, ringed by a railing.
He could also see several shapes hovering above them. The lasers began to charge, and he knew the miracle wouldn’t happen twice.
Least bad option., he thought as he stood and started firing.
Lenaya’s drone caught up as the Custodian caught onto his plan, and he quickly became the target of choice for the rogue security system. He managed to score glancing hits on two of the drones, the rounds sparking off their armor and detonating against the wall in the distance. As one, they began firing, short blasts intended to kill rather than the longer burst that had almost melted an armored door. Carter managed to duck just before the first volley, avoiding the lasers. The air above him shimmered with residual heat, the weaponized light scattering and refracting enough to become visible as a column of energy.
Another burst of plasma from behind him forced the drones to evade. It seemed they were learning from their previous encounter.
You should jump, the Custodian said through his implant, and Carter crouched before pushing hard into the air. Below, he could see the maintenance drones stopped at the edge of the pit, the water swirling rapidly below. He twisted in midair, searching for Lenaya. He barely caught sight of her splash as she vanished beneath the surface. He saw a flash from the corner of his eye, and his back lit up with pain as heat washed over him. Carter hit the water as his consciousness faded.

Apologies for the late post. We’re trying to get the puppies acclimated to other dogs (and specific other dogs acclimated to the puppies) before we have to dog sit at the end of the month. It’s going better than expected, but our expectations were low so that isn’t saying much. I’m not going to have as much writing time over the next few weeks because we’re doing this every couple of days. Expect more delays throughout the month, and a break on the last week.

2023.06.09 17:01 amerifolklegend I am looking for some help comparing models/soliciting advice on things I haven't considered
We have an old R-22 system that needs to be replaced after a failed compressor. It's 17 years old and we have prepared for the investment. But I still want to make good choices, even though I really don't know much about HVAC units.
We are in southern Ohio and have nothing really special about the house (50's era MCM ranch,) other than I don't want anything TOO loud because the outside unit sits near a bedroom window. Here are the choices we are currently looking at after eliminating some choices I wasn't thrilled with. I'm not TOO concerned about the prices, but want to at least make sure we aren't paying top-of-the-line prices for low-end equipment. I'm definitely considering longer term savings, since this is our forever home.
When looking at the specs online, the model numbers are more extensive than the ones in the quotes. Every quote we've received have agreed on a 3-ton machine, as we were very happy with our old one. Unfortunately, I don't have much more information that what I'll give. But I can ask for clarification from these guys if need be.
So here are the choices I am looking at:
Option 1:
Trane XL15i, 15.6 SEER 3 ton + Trane 20kw Heat Package (no more details than that.) Includes 10-yr parts, 1-year labor (plus one year each of labor included up to ten if we subscribe to their service package.) Cost: $12.4K after tax and labor
Option 2:
Trane Run Tru Single, 14.3 SEER 3 ton + Trane 20kw Heat Package. Includes only 10-year "large parts package." $8.8K after tax and labor
Option 3:
RUUD RP1536, 15 SEER 3 ton + RUUD RH1T3617 Heating Unit. Includes 10-year parts/5-year labor. $8.8K after tax and labor
I had other offers, but eliminated them for one reason or another. I have a best practice of trying to go with local/smaller companies. SO I understand that the price may be a bit higher sometimes with that philsophy. But I'm okay with that, provided it's not a deal too good to pass up.
So any help/advice/questions/requests for more information are certainly welcome. Thanks in advance!

2023.06.09 17:00 Initial-Sea2398 Closed on Monday--here's an account of our FTHB journey
Hi all! Sharing our FTHB journey here in case it's helpful to anyone!
We began looking for houses in late 2022, with a plan to move in the summer of 2023. We lived in a different state than we purchased (purchased in NC, and lived across the country), which was an additional challenge. We took about 2 months to follow houses in the areas that we wanted to live in and tried to take notes of what we did and didn't like, how long houses were staying on the market, and the original asking price vs the final selling price. We also got in contact with a few realtors and ended up really liking one. We were upfront about our situation (buying from out-of-state, our price limit, etc.) and she was fantastic.
After the new year, we started getting more serious about our house hunt. In February we saw 6 homes (some in-person, some via FaceTime), but didn't love any of them (for various reasons). At one of the homes, the listing agent was present and told our realtor that he had a house coming on the market soon that we'd be welcome to see. Since it was in a great location, we agreed and got a virtual tour. There was still quite a bit of work to be done (floors needed to be finished, appliances needed to be put back, etc.). We told our agent that we loved the area where the home was and would like to see it as soon as it was finished (or very nearly finished). The listing agent told our relator to give him about 3-4 weeks and we booked plane tickets so that we could see it for ourselves. It was a really cute house, with an awesome location, and he agreed to let it go for 6k under his initial asking price if we wanted to purchase it before it hit the market. We agreed, everyone signed the papers, and we were on our merry way--or so we thought.
The appraisal came back well (and the survey didn't reveal anything weird about the property lines), but the inspection was absolutely horrible. Foundation issues. Issues with the roof structuring. Random water leaks. Improper insulation (not nearly enough). Electrical issues. The list goes on and on. Our agent didn't tell us what to do or push us in any direction, but we told her that we wanted to back out and she was happy to take that on. The seller pushed back a little and said that he'd be willing to "have his people look at it" and also knock 9k off the price, but that was it. We walked. They still haven't listed this house for sale--not sure if they're actually trying to fix the problems, or just trying to sell it off-market to someone who will take their word for it.
Walking away certainly stung, so we took about a week off from house hunting to think about what we wanted to do next. During this time, a few houses came on the market that we liked, so we ended up viewing 5 houses in <48 hours (remotely). Of those 5, we loved 2 and ranked them. The #1 house had been on the market for 5 months (overpriced) so we asked our agent to verbally offer 50k under asking (we also waived their advertised concessions, promised to close within 4 weeks, and already had our pre-approval go through full underwriting to give the sellers confidence). The sellers said that they couldn't come down that much, but they counteroffered in the middle. We thanked them for their time but said that we couldn't go above our offer. At this point, we spoke to our realtor about an offer on our #2 house (had been on the market for ~3 months; they listed it well before they were able to move out, which I think wasn't reasonable for many buyers). As we were deciding on a number, the #1 house came back and said that the house had been on the market for long enough and that they'd accept our initial offer! We were completely stunned. Our realtor drew up the paperwork right away (this was already getting into the late evening). We couldn't believe our luck! Lo and behold, the next morning, the selling agent reached out to our realtor saying that the sellers slept on the offer and no longer wanted to accept it. Onto the next! (By the way, this house is STILL on the market!).
We then moved on to our #2 house and offered ~20k below asking (since it had been sitting on the market); we went back and forth with the sellers a little and finally landed on a price in the middle. Everyone signed the paperwork (yay!) and we agreed to a late closing to accommodate them. We got a clear title, survey that matched what they advertised, and an appraisal $1,000 above our offer. The inspection came back with mostly minor issues, but the inspector emphasized that the roof needed to be replaced. Our agent was able to get two roofers to the home (one that she suggested and one that we chose) and they both came back saying that they strongly felt the roof needed to be replaced and each bid ~10k. We went back to the sellers asking for 10k in concessions and apparently, they were rather furious and insisted that the house didn't need a new roof (even though they weren't sure when the roof was last replaced). All I know is that our agent was on the case and after 3 days of negotiations, we were able to get 8k in concessions. We closed on the house ~2 weeks later. Our agent was 10/10 during the whole process, which made a huge difference for us.
I truly did not appreciate how exhausting house hunting can be. It's a process full of highs and lows and is honestly kind of a part-time job while you're in the thick of things. I'm glad that everything worked out for us in the end, but the process itself is...intense!
I wish everyone a very happy and successful FTHB journey!

2023.06.09 17:00 Coy9ine Stephen Smith Grand Jury Calling Witnesses, Reviewing Evidence - Cold case heats up …
Stephen Smith Grand Jury Calling Witnesses, Reviewing Evidence FITSNews - Will Folks - Staff TLDR: SLED is considering two persons of interest in connection with Smith’s death – 25-year-old Patrick Wilson and 25-year-old Shawn Connelly. “The location of Smith’s body in the middle of the road was totally inconsistent with a vehicular strike – but the massive blood loss observed on the asphalt seemed inconsistent with him being murdered at another location,” I noted in a recent report.
A statewide grand jury in Columbia, South Carolina is actively investigating the 2015 homicide of Stephen Smith, multiple sources familiar with its deliberations have confirmed to this news outlet. In fact, the grand jury is scheduled to reconvene next week to review evidence and hear testimony related to the murder of the 19-year-old from Hampton, S.C.
In other words, it’s increasingly likely arrest warrants will eventually be issued in connection with this eight-year-old cold case – which gained international attention via its purported proximity to the ‘Murdaugh Murders’ crime and corruption saga. Interest in the Smith case escalated even further after it was prominently featured in the hit Netflix documentary, ‘Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal.’
Confirmation of the grand jury’s empaneling should come as no surprise to those following the case.
Two weeks ago, Lexington, S.C. attorney Eric Bland – one of the attorneys representing Smith’s mother, Sandy Smith – said he believed a grand jury had been empaneled based on his conversations with chief Mark Keel of the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
“(Keel) told me subpoenas are being issued – as well as warrants – and I believe there is a grand jury empaneled,” Bland said during a May 25, 2023 panel discussion on CourtTV.
Bland was right …
According to our sources, the grand jury has been meeting for several weeks and has already heard critical evidence related to this unsolved murder – including evidence which “conclusively proves” Smith was killed at the site where his body was found.
Forensic expert Kenneth Kinsey has reportedly confirmed this assessment based on a review of the graphic crime scene photos of Smith’s murder. Kinsey was hired to review the evidence in this case as part of an independent investigation launched by Bland’s law firm.
To recap: Smith’s body was discovered by a passing motorist (a tow truck driver) at approximately 4:00 a.m. EDT on July 8, 2015 in the middle of Sandy Run Road near Crocketville, S.C. Initially deemed gunshot wound – and later a vehicular hit-and-run – the investigation was originally handled by the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) “Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team” (MAIT). It wasn’t until nearly six years later that it became an active murder case handled by SLED.
SLED opened a homicide investigation into Smith’s death shortly after the savage slayings of 52-year-old Maggie Murdaugh and 22-year-old Paul Murdaugh on June 7, 2021 at Moselle – a 1,700-acre hunting property straddling the Salkehatchie River which until recently belonged to the Murdaugh family.
Disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh – a scion of this once-dominant legal dynasty – was convicted of those killings and sentenced to life in prison in March of this year.
What was the Murdaugh family’s connection to Smith’s death? It’s not immediately clear. According to 26-year-old Buster Murdaugh – who has been accused by many on social media of being involved in the crime – there is no connection.
“These baseless rumors of my involvement with Stephen and his death are false,” Murdaugh said in a statement released back in March. “I unequivocally deny any involvement in his death.”
Others close to this story – including Sandy Smith – believe otherwise. In fact, Smith wrote a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the fall of 2016 detailing the Murdaugh family’s alleged involvement.
“Stephen had on more than one occasion mentioned to friends and his twin sister that he was involved romantically with someone from a prominent family in the county who was hiding his sexuality,” Smith wrote in her letter. “He said it would shock people to know this person was gay. We suspect this could be the young man Stephen was referring to, though he never named him.”
As this news outlet reported earlier this year, SLED is considering two persons of interest in connection with Smith’s death – 25-year-old Patrick Wilson and 25-year-old Shawn Connelly, both of Brunson, S.C.
Both Wilson and Connelly lived in the area near where Stephen Smith’s body was found … and there is information obtained by SLED investigators which has reportedly drawn a sharper focus on them as potential suspects. Several of these same leads were followed by producers and investigators associated with the Netflix documentary – as well as the initial legal team retained by Sandy Smith. In November of 2021, Charleston, S.C. attorney Andy Savage – who at the time was representing Smith’s family – gave an interview to WCIV TV-4 in which he indicated the Murdaughs were “unconnected” to Smith’s murder and any speculation related to their involvement was “unfounded.”
“There are suspects we have in sight that are unconnected to Murdaugh,” Savage told reporters Anne Emerson and Drew Tripp. “The focus any in the media have on Murdaugh may be unfounded.”
Sandy Smith recoiled at that revelation – and parted ways with Savage as her attorney shortly thereafter.
As previously reported by this news outlet, on December 18, 2015 – five months after Smith’s murder – SCHP investigators received a tip from Wilson’s self-described step-father, Darrell Williams of Varnville, S.C. According to Williams, Wilson informed him that Connelly – another Hampton County teenager – was driving a vehicle which “struck and killed Stephen Smith.”
Who told him to share this information? Randy Murdaugh – Alex Murdaugh’s older brother.
According to case notes contained in the MAIT report, Williams “stated that the reason he was passing this information on was because Randy Murdaugh told him to call.”
As I have often noted, the crime scene in this case is “a study in contradictions.”
“The location of Smith’s body in the middle of the road was totally inconsistent with a vehicular strike – but the massive blood loss observed on the asphalt seemed inconsistent with him being murdered at another location,” I noted in a recent report.

2023.06.09 16:59 BaronVonSwagworth Betray me after I help you with your work? Enjoy losing your career.
Sorry in advance if this is a little unstructured, it's difficult to piece together everything in an order that makes sense, and it's still emotionally touchy for me. TL:DR at the bottom.
Background is that I dated this girl a while ago. We met at university on the same (law) course, and English wasn't her first language (somewhat important). She was an extremely ambitious, very fashionable woman, which I adored - but this meant that she became overstretched in the additional things she had signed up for for extra credits to boost her CV lines etc. (Think of working on student society boards, taking additional courses, etc). She would be very stressed for months by doing so much.
Long story short, I fell head-over-heels for this person, and would do everything I could to help her in her career. Also perhaps important to mention is that she comes from a relatively poor family, half of which were immigrants to our country (in Europe) (in fact, I do too, we bonded over our shared experiences). For one particular additional course, she was really struggling with some philosophy and ethics (of law) writing. Important to know is that this course was part of what is known as a 'Pre-PhD' course; basically training and courses to prepare you for a PhD. Philosophy and ethics of law is something I know a lot on, so I offered to help her with it. Because this particular course was in English (In fact her third language), I ended up writing the entire thing for her (about 5 essays total I think). I'm a people pleaser, and loved to see her a little happier. But in my mind, it wasn't really cheating in a sense, because we would always discuss the topic together when writing, making sure she actually understood it, and she would then edit the structure etc to remember it. It was primarily the writing she needed help with. By this point, we were together for about 2 years.
Anyway, we were almost finished with our studies, and I went abroad for a couple of months for a traineeship. In the meantime, she finished the aforementioned course, and successfully applied for a PhD/researcher position (her dream job) in a city the other side of our country. I was ecstatic for her, and also very excited that we would finally have a proper relationship together; we had both been very stressed and preoccupied with work for the last year or so together (though I was far better at handling it than her, who would largely isolate herself from me in periods a bit too tough.) Previously, she had not done anything for my birthday, Christmas, our anniversary or valentines day due to stress - which I accepted as reasonable under the circumstances. (I'm a hopeless romantic, and not very good at identifying red flags.)
When I got back from the traineeship however, she was very different; like an entirely different person. Very cold, outwardly resentful of her last 2 with me, and made absolutely no effort in the relationship at all. After a couple of months, a few weeks of ghosting me and giving me cryptic responses, she essentially forced me to break up with her, because she wouldn't do it herself.
Turns out, she never actually loved me (her words), never missed me at all, and thought that I was useful to keep around both as moral support (there were many nights with her overwhelmed, and me consoling her over those 2 years), someone to fuck, and for helping her with work. I'm not certain if she cheated on me, but I was suspicious of some of her antics and the way she spoke about a couple of her friends. There are a lot of things I have missed out partly out of being unable to remember details, and partly because I don't want to dwell on it too much. But suffice to say that she said a lot of things were said that were made to hurt me - and I was, badly.
The Revenge
I'm not proud of this, but I was furious, hurt, and decided to try and retaliate.
At this point, she was just about to finish her thesis, and be entirely done and graduate (I had a few months earlier). But remember when I help her with this Pre-PhD assignment? Well I kept those files. Although she edited them a bit before handing them in, it wasn't substantially different. I knew this, so sent my copies of those files (with their metadata intact, so dated before the assignment was handed in) to the faculty confessing that I had helped another student and violated academic integrity, with the recommendation that they check their plagiarism software for evidence of a near perfect match. They did, and they discovered that the work for her Pre-PhD course was not her own; and she was disqualified from it. Turns out, her prospective completion of that course was a very important part of her PhD application - so she lost that too, and just after she had moved into her new place in the city with the PhD.
After that, and with that kind of stain on your academic record, there's no PhD for you - and she was very specialized in our country's national law, so couldn't really move anywhere else or switch jurisdictions, though she did end up graduating a few months later. As far as I last know, she ended up in a low-middle-sized law firm - something I know that she vehemently did not want to end up at. So it basically destroyed her life.
I do feel bad about it, it was a disproportionate response in terms of consequence. I didn't think through all the consequences when I sent that email, and probably wouldn't have if I had. I'm sort of glad for standing up for myself - something that I got a lot better at after this - but I don't think it was worth hurting her that badly. I've never done anything like this to anyone else, thankfully.
TL:DR - Relationship with girlfriend was totally false from the beginning, and she never loved me, and used me out of convenience - so I reported her for plagiarism at her uni, she lost her job, delayed her studies by months, and probably now hates her life.

2023.06.09 16:59 mAverIck2012ap Should I buy a Logitech G Pro X Superlight or Viper V2 Pro?
Using a Viper Mini for the last 3 years. I'm a laptop user, hence I need a wireless mouse.
My current thought on each.
Viper: USB C, Optical Switches (There should be no issues with double click, having abused 1st gen optical switches). There's no place to keep the USB reciever and I'm afraid I might end up losing it. I'm comfortable with the shape and texture of the Viper. Razer's QC is a bit shoddy, I had to get my Viper Mini replaced 2-3 times at the time of purchase, to get a unit which did not have issues. I don't know how the experience would've been if I faced issues (which I thankfully did not) if Amazon's replacement period expired. And lastly I HATE, and I can't emphasize enough on the word 'hate', Synapse.
GPX Superlight: It's a tried and tested workhorse. I find GHub to be much more bearable. The design seems more comfortable (my hand kind of cramps when using my cirrent Viper Mini for long sessions). The reason I haven't pulled the trigger on it is the concern over double clicking and scroll wheel issues (wheel issues is something that even Razer has so I'm screwed either way there). Also Elitehubs is bundling a pair of G333s along with it so I'll also end up with a decent pair of wired earphones as well.

2023.06.09 16:59 3sperr How do I actually push myself properly to avoid burnout?
Ive been stuck at the 4-5 hour barrier all year. The most ive done is 6 hours of 50 min poms. Now I do 30 min poms and I usually go for 8 poms on a decent average day. But I cant get passed that. I want to do 10 30min poms on average by the end of summer.
I cant improve if I dont get out of my comfort zone, so im gonna have to push myself sometimes. Studying is like a muscle so it has to be trained. But when should I do push myself, how often should I do it, and should I go to my limit on the days that I push myself?
Is it better to try to increase pomodoro amount or pomodoro duration? Like increasing my 30 min poms to 35min poms but with the same amount of pomodoros. The 2nd method seems slow though.
So how do I actually do this? I want to get to at least 5 hours, preferable 5-6 hours on average before I go to 12th grade. Im in 11th right now and will be in 12th after summer.

2023.06.09 16:57 DisclosedForeclosure Is Telekom/Ranger luring into VDSL contracts by promising fiber?
Got visited by a salesman who claimed that soon fiber will be installed at my street and when that happens I won't be able to use VDSL from my current Internet provider. Is such scenario even possible?
I took a look at their offer and indeed, Telekom on their official page plans to install fiber in my area, but between August 2023 and December 2024:
"Bestellen Sie jetzt Ihren Glasfaser-Anschluss Wenn Sie heute bestellen, wird der Glasfaser-Ausbau an Ihrer Adresse voraussichtlich im Zeitraum von Anfang August 2023 bis Ende December 2024 erfolgen. Bis dahin können Sie einen verfügbaren DSL-Tarif hinzubuchen."
Yes, December 2024, not 2023.
Salesperson claimed it's going to be rather 6-8 months. Not 1.5 year. 6 months would be fine as this is the period when VDSL would cost only 20 bucks, but if Fiber is installed in worst scenario in December 2024 it means that I'm stuck with regular VDSL for €50/month for a whole year while I have the same option right now at my current provider for less than that.
But anyway, if I only want to have fiber why would I have to switch to VDSL already now? Sales guy claimed that it is necessary due to some preliminary period, but is it true?

2023.06.09 16:56 Eastern-Art-1343 why do bigots never attack the porn industry if being gay is a choice?
ive heard people say being gay is a choice and how can we stop people becoming gay.
thats entirely open for interpretation.
but it made think ok if you really want to target someone why not the porn industry aince porn is now widely available with unfettered access kids as young as 5-8 have watched porn and teens have complete access to adult pornography . where previous generations it wasn't as easy accessible.
serious question all these hardliner anti lgbtq and not one word towards the porn industry.
this is of course if being gay is actually a choice of course.
if you think it's lgbtq people in generall pop maybe guess again its free access to any and all porn
also people who say gay is a choice makes me believe you are a bi sexual yourself otherwise how would you know did you make the choice your self

2023.06.09 16:55 kitkataj Taking T abroad?
So I'm going to San Diego at the end of July. This is my first time ever flying alone and I've never been to the airport alone. I'm on testogel and obviously I need to apply that every day, which would mean bringing it with me abroad. I've read stuff about what you need to do, but I'm still not completely clear on it. Since testosterone is a controlled substance in the US, I have to declare it. I guess I'm just worried they'll end up taking it, especially since it's through GGP, though I'm going to pay for the travelling with medicines letter they offer. Also, it makes sense to keep it in my hand luggage so it doesn't get lost, but you're only allowed 100ml and I'm pretty sure the testogel bottle is more than that, so I'm not sure if I'd have to put it in my checked baggage? Can anyone tell me the process of taking T abroad? Especially the US if you know. I just want to be totally clear so I don't run into any issues, especially since I'm by myself.

2023.06.09 16:55 Upstairs-Belt8255 How should I manuever a crush as a 28F?
Okay okay okay. I live in a big city and there's a cafe that I'm a regular at on my street....it was bought by a new owner a month ago, whose a couple years older than me. From the first time I met him, I caught a vibe. He's the same background, race, ethnicity and religion as me. I got the feeling he got a vibe too and whenever I walk past his cafe we talk or when i walk into the cafe to get a coffee, he asks me about my day and tries to prolong the convo as long as possible.I know for a fact that he's unmarried and after stalking online I do think he is single.Last Thursday evening, after the gym, as I walked by his cafe to my apartment, he was sitting outside with a glass of wine and asked me if I want to get a glass too and we relaxed and drank together for two hours. He mentioned showing me around his neighborhood where he lives because my lease is ending in a couple months and eh recommended that neighborhood then got my number to make plans on that Saturday. His friend came over and he invited me out with them but I declined. Saturday, then, comes by and NOTHING. Then, I walk past his cafe on Sunday and he calls out to me from behind the counter and asks how my weekend was. I reply and go home because he never even texted me.Then Monday evening, he texts me around 5 PM says "Hey it's XXX, Whats up?!" in our native language. I take 5 hours to reply and then we have a short convo about our days and the convo ended after a couple texts. Since then I've stoped by his cafe two times to get a quick coffee and there is definitely a flirtatious energy between us, sexual tension and we laugh while talking to each other. He tries to get me to stay as long as possible to prolong convo as I'm walking out but idk if im imaginging it.I'm confused because I 100% can feel energy between us but I truly believe if a guy is REALLY interested, he'd make more of an effort and maybe he has some other romantic situation going on and im IMAGINING the energy from his side. WHAT DO I DO?! WHY would he ignore hanging out with me on Saturday and then not even discuss it and pretend like we never made plans but then texted me on Monday?

2023.06.09 16:55 DancesWithElectrons r/Cochlearimplants will be joining in on the June 12th-14th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.
## What's going on? A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users. On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface . This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
## Many third party apps support accessibility options beyond what the official app supports.
## What's the plan? On June 12th, [many subreddits](
https://old.reddit.com/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete\_and\_growing\_list\_of\_participating/) will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
**The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.**

2023.06.09 16:55 SensitiveBig5437 how long is it going to take for my guy to spark back up? (Details below)
| Marvin has been with me for about a month now. I got him from a friend who kept him in the cup for weeks, then moved him to a .5 gallon tank. He was suffering, not eating, had no stimulation so I offered to take him. He currently lives in this 9gal fluval tank by himself until I can assure my tank is fully cycled and ready for some tank mates. I’m concerned he isn’t going to become bright and happy again? I’ve noticed quite a difference in his tails end, it’s growing out more (the white part) but other than that same old. He eats with me now, but not nearly enough. He typically eats a pellet (sometimes two) a night so I throw in some treats and he eats those. I’ve tried 3 different types of food with him and he really just doesn’t like anything I feed him. I believe she fed him pelletes. I even tried flakes, nothing. any suggestions on how to make his life more comfortable and happy? I just got him the new decor piece in the middle, he has a cave, a floating log, plants (that need to grow in) and aqua soil. My perimeters have been in tact as I’ve been doing consistent water changes waiting for the cycle. submitted by SensitiveBig5437 to bettafish [link] [comments] |
2023.06.09 16:54 bikingfencer Galatians chapter 5 - vices and virtues
Galatians Chapter Five -1. The Anointed frees [שחרר,
SheeHRayR] us
unto freedom [חרות,
HayROoTh], therefore stand, and do not submit [תכנעו,
TheeKhahN`Oo] again [שוב,
ShOoB] to yoke [לעל,
Le'oL] the slavery.
“The expression for freedom [επ ελευθερια - ep eleutheria] (in slightly different Greek form) appears in the certificates of sacral manumission which were given to slaves who purchased their freedom. The slave would deposit the money in the temple of his god for the priest to transfer to his master “for freedom.” He then became the slave of his god, free from his human master.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 545-546)
“Among the Jews, the Messiah’s reign was to be a reign of liberty, and hence the Targum [ancient Jewish commentary] on Lamen. [Lamentations] ii. 22. says, “Liberty shall be publicly proclaimed to the people of the house of Israel, על יד משיחא âl yad Mashicha, by the hand of the Messiah, such as was granted to them by Moses and Aaron, at the time of the Passover.” (Clarke, 1831, vol. II p. 393)
...
-5. And we, in spirit upon foundation [of]
belief, waiting [מיחלים,
MeYahHahLeeYM] to hope [for] fruit, the our righteousness [δικαιοσυνης -
dikaiosunes, justification, righteousness].
“The language is so compact that Paul’s meaning has to be inferred from 3:14; 5:22-23; and Rom. [Romans] 8:23-26.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 548-549)
“The full measure of human righteousness is still a thing of the eschatological future (cf. [compare with] Rom 5:19).” (Joseph A. Fitzmyer, 1990, TNJBC p. 789)
“That they could not have the Holy Spirit, without faith, was a doctrine also of the Jews; hence it is said, Mechilta, fol. [folio] 52. ‘That faith was of great consequence, with which the Israelites believed in Him, who, with one word, created the universe; and because the Israelites believed in God, the Holy Spirit dwelt in them; so that being filled with God, they sung praises to him.’” (Clarke, 1831, vol. II pp. 393-394)
-6. That yes, in Anointed YayShOo'ah ["Savior", Jesus] there is no thought [חשיבות,
HahSheeYBOoTh], not to circumcision [למילה,
LahMeeYLaH] and not to foreskin [לערלה,
Lah`ahRLaH], rather to belief, the laborer in way [of] love.
“No passage in Paul’s letters is of greater importance for integral understanding of his religion and the relation of his faith to his ethics. The mutuality of faith, hope, and love – a theme repeated with many variations – runs through everything he has written and forms the substance of his theology. … Paul’s religion is distorted whenever his ethics and his ‘good works’ are made to appear as an incidental by-product of his faith rather than as one of its essential ingredients.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 550-551)
“This humble, holy, operative, obedient LOVE, is the grand touchstone of all human creeds, and confessions of faith. Faith, without this, has neither soul nor operation: in the language of the apostle James, it is dead, and can perform no function of the spiritual life, no more than a dead man can perform the duties of animal or civil life.” (Clarke, 1831, vol. II p. 394)
...
-12. Would that [מי יתן,
MeeY YeeThayN] and be cut [ויכרתו,
VeYeeKahRThOo] the misleaders [המתעים,
HahMahTh`eeYM] [of] you!
“‘I wish that those who are upsetting you would even emasculate themselves!’ This is what Paul said and meant. … for a similar outburst see Phil. [Philippians] 3:2-3, where the advocates of circumcision are ‘dogs,’ and by a play on words – περιτομη [peritome’], κατατομην [katatmen] - ‘circumcision’ becomes ‘mutilation.’ Paul may have been thinking of the mad spectacle of the Cybele-Attis cult, whose priests in frenzied devotion used to emasculate themselves as a sacrifice to their deity. … The shock of Paul’s statement to the Judaizers can be measured in the light of the prohibition in Deut. [Deuteronomy] 23:1. To a devout Jew his blunt language would be as sacrilegious as a Christian would find the wish of a disbeliever in sacraments that all advocates of baptism would drown themselves. Never happy after making such denunciations (II Cor. [Corinthians]1:23-2:11; Phil. 3:18-19), Paul quickly changes his tone…” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 554-555)
-13. My brethren, to
freedom you have been called,
only that not be, the freedom, means [אמצעי,
’ehMTsah`eeY] in hands of the flesh,
rather that minister, [each] man [את,
’ehTh (indicator of direct object; no English equivalent)] his neighbor in love.
“To be freed from the ceremonial law, is the Gospel liberty; to pretend freedom from the moral law, is antinomianism.” (Clarke, 1831, vol. II p. 395)
-14. See,
all the Instruction included [כלולה,
KLOoLaH] in saying [במאמר,
BeMah’ahMahR] one – “
and love to your neighbor like you.”
“The quotation is from Lev. [Leviticus] 19:18; cf. Rom. 13:8-10 [and Matt. [Matthew] 7:11 (Joseph A. Fitzmyer, 1990, TNJBC p. 789)]. The tense of the verb ‘fulfilled’ is perfect; thus Paul says that the whole law is fulfilled, in the sense of ‘has been fulfilled’ whenever one man loves another as himself…. Paul the Christian loved his neighbor not because a commandment disobeyed would bring punishment, or fulfilled would merit reward, but because it was his new nature to do to.
But who was Paul’s neighbor? He was, first of all, ‘the one who was near,’ the fellow member of the society of Christ who needed help to bear life’s burdens (6:2). Then, with continuously lengthening radius, Paul drew a series of concentric circles to embrace all men (6:10; I Thess. [Thessalonians] 5:15; I Cor. 9:22). Even his enemies were included, for Christ received sinners, and personal vengeance was no fruit of the Spirit (6:1; Rom. 12:20; 15:1-3). … He bore the burden of his neighbor’s sins, and although he sometimes had to threaten them, he was never without hope for their repentance (I Cor. 4; II Cor. 12:19-13:10; II Thess. 3:14-15). He could hurl anathemas, and his friends did not always find him easy to get on with … but the love of Christ would never permit him to contract the circle of his neighbors (Rom. 9:1-3; 10:1; II Cor. 7:5-16; 1:23-2:11). (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X p. 557)

Fruit of the Spirit and usurpations of [ומעללי, OoMah`ahLahLaY] the flesh
[verses 16 to end of chapter]
-16. Say I to you, walk in way the spirit and do not fill [את,
’ehTh] desires [תאוות,
Thah`ahVOTh] [of] the flesh,
-17. for the flesh desires [מתאוה,
MeeTh’ahVeH] to what that is in opposition [שבנגוד,
ShehBeNeeGOoD] to spirit, and the spirit is opposed [מתנגדת,
MeeThNeGehDehTh] to the flesh. [The] two [of] them oppose to this to this, and to that [ולכן,
OoLeKhayN] you are not able to do [את,
’ehTh] what that is in your want.
“This is Paul’s way of stating the Jewish doctrine of the ‘two impulses’ which are at war within the heart of man. The rabbis declared that God created Adam with two inclinations, one good, the other evil, and required him to choose which to obey. He was free to follow his good impulse, but he chose the evil, and so did all his descendants. Consequently every man became the Adam of his own soul. Some maintained that the evil impulse awakened at the age of nine, others at twelve. Study with practice of the Torah was the sovereign remedy to wear it away …” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 561)

-19. Deeds of the flesh are revealed [גלויים,
GLOoYeeYM], and these are they:
adultery [נאוף,

fornication, impurity [טמאה,
TooM’aH], licentiousness [זמה,

magic [כשוף

i ; the Greek here is “φαρμακεια
pharmakeia - the use of drugs of any kind, whether wholesome or poisonous...” (Stamm, 1953,

HOLeLOoTh], and as similar.
Say I to what that I already said: doers of deeds like these will not inherit [את,
’ehTh] kingdom of the Gods.
“Πορνεια [Porneia] ... fornication ... means ‘prostitution’, but includes sexual vice and unfaithfulness to the marriage vow. The task of the church in creating a conscience on this matter was made doubly difficult by the practice of prostitution in the name of religion. Long before Paul, the prophets had denounced the fertility cults and made prostitution a synonym for idolatry.
Φαρμακεια [pharmakeia] ... Since witches and sorcerers used drugs, the word came to designate witchcraft, enchantment, sorcery, and magic. The law of Moses prescribed the death penalty for it, and the prophets denounced the Egyptians, Babylonians and Canaanites for practicing it; but this did not prevent the Jews from producing some famous practitioners (Acts 13:6-12; 19:1-20). Next to state-worship, magic was the most dangerous competitor of true religion... claiming to specialize in the impossible, it prostituted faith to superstition, and divorced religion from ethics. ... In Paul’s spiritual arithmetic, faith plus miracles minus love amounted exactly to zero....
Ερις [Eris] is ... strife ... The spirit of Eris is perfectly described in the words of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland – ‘ambition, distraction, uglification, and derision.’
The fact that he expected the near return of Christ to end this present age must not be permitted to obscure the equally important fact that he regarded his own life and witness for Christ as an essential element in hastening that event.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 561-565)
-22. In opposition to [לעמת,

he is love, happiness, peace,
patience, [ארך רוח,

self– upon such [מדות,

“Since love is a personal relation it is not a matter of law, and cannot be commanded; and since it is God’s own love growing as his ‘fruit’ in the hearts of men, no one can claim it as a merit for self-salvation. ...
... in every age ... men have found it hard to see how God could have anything in common with humanity, and Christians have been tempted to make a distinction in kind between God’s love and man’s love. Paul’s authority has been claimed for this dualistic view. Αγαπη [agape’] is set against ερος [eros]. God’s love is said to be αγαπη reaching down to save man by his grace, and ερος man’s self-love aspiring upward to save himself. Paul’s αγαπη is associated with justification by faith, the Greek ερος with salvation by works.... Jerusalem and the Christian faith are made to oppose Athens and human reason, and the conclusion is drawn from the history of Christianity that ερος, man’s self love, has always been a source of corruption of αγαπη, love inspired by God’s grace.
This interpretation of Christian love is intended as a defense of the doctrine of justification by faith and as a means of securing scriptural support for a dualistic philosophy which aims to protect the transcendence of God against humanism. But to draw such sweeping conclusions from a word study of two Greek nouns, without adequate consideration of other related Greek words and ideas, is to oversimplify. The LXX [The Septuagint, the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible] is full of evidence that this distinction between αγαπη and ερος cannot be maintained on the basis of lexicography. The Greek O.T. [Old Testament] uses both the noun αγαπη and the verb αγαπαω [agapao] to express not only God’s love for men, but man’s love for God and for his fellow man. Although there is no certain evidence that the noun αγαπη was used by nonbiblical writers prior to Christianity, the argument from silence may be invalidated by future discoveries, and it would be precarious to conclude that αγαπη was a specifically Christian word.
One-sided emphasis on God’s love as ‘unmotivated’ by anything in his creatures tempts men to regard him in the light of an egotistical philanthropist who expects gratitude and praise but neither needs nor desires the mutuality that is inherent in the very nature of love... Without a faith that dares humbly to believe that God needs man’s love ... the Christian’s conception of his high calling to be a kingdom builder is liable to reduce itself to blind obedience to commands given arbitrarily for man’s good while awaiting God’s eschatological fiat. Such a misconception is bound to give aid and comfort to the inclination of human nature – ‘the flesh’ – to divorce religion from ethics.
Grave moral consequences result from such a view of Christian love. It is associated with a doctrine of predestination that makes God’s choice of the objects of his salvation utterly arbitrary.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 565-566)
“The peace which was the fruit of the Spirit ... could be trusted to keep men's hearts and minds (Phil. 4:7), so that they need have not anxiety about anything. This explains the sublime recklessness of the Christian peacemakers. Being colaborers with God (Rom. 8:28), they were aggressors for peace. They aimed to live at peace with all men (Rom. 12:18), but fear of making enemies did not turn them from their task of producing soundness, wholeness, and harmony in a world of chaos. Their reasonable service was to ... substitute the righteousness and peace and joy of his [God's] kingdom (Rom. 14:17) for the low aims of 'the flesh,' thereby creating the conditions for peace. Their ideal was to live so that quarrels could never get started.
Christian peace was therefore neither the calm of inactivity nor the mere passive enjoyment of freedom from strife. It was not the imperturbability of the Epicurean, or the apathy of the Stoic, or the contemplation of the mystic. The man who possessed it was not exempt from storm and shipwreck, but by faith he knew that he would arrive in port (Acts 27:21-25), and that all was well for him and his fellow men of faith ... And so, where all else was panic, he played the man.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 567)
“... just as God’s patience was not to be presumed upon, so the Christian’s patience was not a spiritless good nature that would put up with things which it could not escape, or would not prevent. It was patience with a purpose, as in Paul’s pleas to Philemon, which contrasts so sharply with the Stoic motive for self control... Those who bore this fruit ‘turned the world upside down’ (Acts 17:6), and the enemy did not know how to deal with such unheard of patience and persistence.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 568)
“Negatively defined, gentleness is everything that the ‘insolent, haughty, boastful’ men of Rom. 1:30 are not. It is the opposite of υβρις [hubris], the worst of sins in the eyes of the Greeks – deliberate, arrogant defiance of the gods by overstepping the limits set for human beings. In the O.T. such men are called ‘sons of Belial,’ the turbulent, highhanded wicked, who rage against God, kill, rob and enslave the righteous ‘meek’ and take possession of the earth for themselves. The psalms are full of moans and complaints against this rich and powerful majority, who used religion as a means of gain and kept their consciences in flexible subservience to the exigencies of power.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 569)
“’Εγκρατεια [Egkrateia] is temperance (KJV [King James Version]), self-control (RSV [Revised Standard Version]) ....
The Stoics had helped to prepare the soil out of which this fruit of the Spirit was to grow. They insisted that the sovereign reason could and should control the passions. They believed in a law of nature to which they must conform, and they endeavored to maintain their inner freedom under all circumstances. But their motive was very different from Paul’s, the one being devoted to the glory of the God of grace, the other to the preservation of the sovereign self-will. When the Stoic collided with things beyond his control, his inner independence turned into apathy, practicing the motto ‘When we can’t do what we want, we want to do what we can.’ He took orders from his commander in chief, an impersonal God who had the power of life or death; but he did it in such a way as to make it clear to God and men that he, the Stoic, was after all the captain of his soul. He controlled his anger because he found it a nuisance to be under the power of any passion and in his sight meekness was contemptible weakness...
Paul exalted humility: ‘It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me’ (2:20). ... His self-discipline was the result of his spiritual experiences, rather than an undertaking to induce them; and his self-control was sane compared with the ascetic excesses of later Christian groups such as the ‘Encratites,’ who forbade marriage and followed fantastic dietary rules.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 569-570)
“Unrepentant sinners have no appetite for the fruit of the Spirit, and when its production and distribution require changes in the political and economic status quo, men ... pass laws against it ... Especially in time of war these traits of Christian character have been forbidden fruit, though given for the healing of the nations. Occasionally the world, exhausted with fighting, and sick of its cynical Epicureanism, has professed a desire for the fruits of the Spirit, but on its own terms without the cross required to produce them.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB X p. 570)
... 26. Do not, please [נא, Nah’] be panters of [שואפי,
ShO’ahPhaY] honor vain [שוא,
ShahVe’], the provokers [המתגרים,
HahMeeThGahReeYM] and enviers [ומקנאים,
OoMQahN’eeYM] a man in his neighbor.
“The right stood in terror of the iconoclasm of the left, and the radicals labeled all other men reactionaries ... Both sides professed to love liberty and defend it, but neither was willing to grant it to the other.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X p. 572) END NOTE

2023.06.09 16:54 No_Climate_6391 Why do you have a problem saying "Because Allah said so"?
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
From what I've seen online on all platforms and irl, whenever a muslim is asked "Why is action X wrong in Islam" or "Why should we do X and Y"
even from another muslim the answer is almost never "Because Allah said it", but instead they delve into assumptions and conjectures on what the reason is, so the foundation of their belief that X is right and Y is wrong becomes those very explanations which means that the moment their assumptions are proven wrong their moral belief on X and Y starts shaking, and even completely shatters for some, and slowly drives them into kuffr.
I have seen this cycle countless times:
- Person A reads in the quran that we should do X
- Person A tries to understand why "in order to be convinced" that X is the right thing to do
- Person A finds a couple of "explanations" online or from scholars that are convincing to him, but fails to read "Allah knows best".
- After a couple of years Person A is not so sure those explanations hold anymore
- Person A starts having doubts whether X is the right thing to do
From step 5 onwards there are two types of people:
- Those who come back to their senses
- Those who reject X altogether (which is kuffr)
Let me just remind you of this verse (
2:285):
The Messenger ˹firmly˺ believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. They ˹all˺ believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers. ˹They proclaim,˺ “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and obey. ˹We seek˺ Your forgiveness, our Lord! And to You ˹alone˺ is the final return.”
We're supposed to just obey whatever Allah told us regardless of whether we understand the wisdom behind it or not, and we can see this in the stories of all the prophets, but I see lots of people holding the position that they won't follow something
even if Allah is the one who commanded it unless they're "convinced" of the reason behind it, and these people are the ones that whenever asked "Why don't you do X" they answer with "I'm just not convinced of it". And this is dangerous on three levels:
- We don't follow what someone tells us only if we think there's a possibility he/she might be wrong. So having the same attitude towards Allah means you believe He could be mistaken about X, which is kuffr.
- Not following Allah's commands when you don't understand them implies you have no trust in him.
- Following other people's words that you know are against what Allah said because you're "more convinced of them" or because "they're more appealing" is shirk.
When Allah commands any prophet to do something, they don't reply with: "
Why? convince me and I'll do it. Otherwise I'm not!". If your role model in life is the prophet Mohammad ﷺ then "
hear and obey" as all the prophets did.
Keep in mind that the explanations of the scholars about anything are fallible, so we should just take them as a grain of salt: Not completely believe that they're the absolute truth, and not completely reject them. It's good to learn about them, but don't let them be the
only reason why you follow X instead of "because God said so".
TL;DR:
Once we establish that the Quran is Allah's words then we should follow every command in it regardless of whether we understand the wisdom behind them or not. Unshakable belief has to be based on unshakable foundations, so if the foundation is fallible (i.e. conjectures) then your imaan is in danger, but if the foundation is "Because Allah said so" then the only way for shaytan or anyone else to deviate you from the right path is to prove that Allah didn't say so.
