Is adrian rogers wife still alive
I finally did it. I cheated.
2023.06.10 22:48 SignalFailure0270 I finally did it. I cheated.
I had sex for the first time in almost a year. I couldn’t handle the dead bedroom anymore. Last night, I mustered the courage and met this woman I met online. She knows my story and is fine with it. We fucked for hours, and we both orgasmed more than once. I feel like a new man.
I had anticipated a lot of different emotions, guilt, remorse, etc. But I have none of that. I feel euphoric, energetic, and hopeful. This may be my solution.
I still love my wife. We have a strong emotional bond, and I enjoy her company. Sex is literally the only thing we don’t see eye to eye.
I just need my needs taken care of. It’s purely physical. I’m a caveman.

2023.06.10 22:48 klok_kaos TTRPG System Design Poll
Hello All! I'm doing some basic polling and playtesting with an option I'm about 50/50 on for my game
Project Chimera: E.C.O. currently in alpha development.
Basic information: Players take on the role of a black ops super soldier working for a PMSC (Chimera Group International). The game heavily focuses on stealth and social objective completion over combat, ie, there is no incentive for combat, it's a way to achieve an objective, but it's the worst ROI since it is potentially lethal and consumes resources much faster than other methods and doesn't offer special rewards, also there's not really "loot" per se like in a DnD game. Loot is most likely to be information that advances the plot.
The game is crunchy, while easy to learn the core game loops (there's a 1 page overview that will get any experienced RPer able to sit for their first session and 3 points of entry: pregen, table roll/select, and full custom) it's mostly that it has lots of flexibility and character options, which is great for players that want that, but it's a known limitation it will not appeal to rules light/casual gamer preferred experiences.
The game takes place in a five minutes into the future dystopian mirror alt earth with cyberpunk and sci fi elements. Characters have access to things like advanced training, gear, bionics, psionics, super powers, feats, etc. A character's starting template doesn't restrict them, it just figures out their initial boosted areas, ie if you take the bionics aspect, your character will have more bionics than a general build character, you can still access everything else, but it's more a question of where you want the thematic focus of the character to be. All characters are baseline competent in the areas of stealth, socialization, survival and gunplay/combat (you absolutely can use HTH and melee with extensive options, but as one might expect, guns are usually more effective, though those options definitely have their place). As such consider these things to be relevant to potential players, ie if you hate stealth/social, prefer rules light casual, opinions are less relevant in this case because it's not a game built for that kind of player. The Actual Concern: Currently I'm considering removing the concept of a critical hit in combat doing double damage automatically and there's a good amount of relevant information: 1. Players have others ways to boost damage 2. This wouldn't remove the option, it just expands the option to more options. The concept works like this: Characters have 4 meta currencies, one of them is called Essence. This is a daily regen pool and is used for "enhanced performance" of some kind. Presently it can be used for things like a small bonus to a roll for a save, or gaining +1 standard action on a turn, remove a level of exhaustion, rally, etc., the point being it does have a level of utility. It might be also be used to fuel a special ability from a feat, augment a powepsionic, allow for a special application move, etc. Crits occur in combat (skills can also crit) similar to PF2e in that you can gain one on a nat 20 or if you exceed the TN by 10+ (in most cases, there are other ways to finagle this but they are niche). Essence is described in game as: Essence represents the total abstract humanity of a character as well as their general combined physical and mental well being, focus, and general willpower. It is utilized to overcome general limitations and perform above expectations. Essence is most commonly associated with the concept of the superego. The proposed change would be a character gains 1 essence (up to max pool, this can be spent immediately if it exceeds) on a crit, but double damage would cost 2 essence. A typical early level character is likely to have somewhere around 10-20 essence total in the pool (could be more or less but this is an estimated average). Some positives of this proposed change: This provides another opportunity for essence regen for players. This provides additional utility and tactical choice in combat (ie they might opt for double damage and spend the extra, bank it, apply a status effect instead, etc.), particularly because more damage is not always a preferred option. In many cases disabling an opponent quickly and without drawing attention is preferred over killing them, and in some cases capturing a target alive is the mission itself. This can open up other combat applications for essence use. Some negatives of the proposed change: Adding a player choice here can slow down combat for indecisive players. This puts more emphasis/reward on combat, which isn't really the intent of the game. Essence is easier to earn in game in other ways, but adding incentive in combat assumes that this is a reward for player behavior, when open combat is, by design, meant to be more of an "oops, we screwed up moment". With that said, characters are black ops super soldiers so the game is less about never being in combat and more about trying to stave off combat as much as possible and if you have to enter combat, doing so with control of the battlefield in a smart and tactical manner. This requires additional book keeping. Not a whole lot, we already have to track essence use, but we now have to consider that it will fluctuate more often (as part of combat). Why I'm split: The game is built and meant to be focused on providing experiences other than combat (ie the goal is to get as far away from typical game loop of "punch monster until it drops loot" as possible), but it would be fair to say it also has extremely robust options and tactical choice for combat. To be clear, the combat is highly tactical and has more moves available in and out of combat than probably any other known game on the market, but it's also not meant to appeal specifically to "combat only players" and the system design directly reflects this. Basically my design values are in a bit of conflict here. Obviously I'll play test this regardless, but I'm curious about: Are there additional reasons foagainst this? Given the premises of the game, which do you think is likely to be more fun for you specifically? For the type of gamer this game is meant to appeal to? Why?

2023.06.10 22:47 seastheday388 Looking for a Roger quote
I'm trying to find that episode where Roger says something along the lines of "if something is important, you find the time". The context was he had a husband politician of sorts that Roger as the wife was asking a favor of on behalf of Stan. Or something along those lines. Any leads would help thanks.

2023.06.10 22:46 Heyheydontpaynomind Just finished S1 and I have THOUGHTS
Broke everything down into several sections. It's a bummer I couldn't watch/discuss while it was airing, so I'd love to hear people's thoughts!
Overall Thoughts/S1 Ending
I thought this show was a great ride. It wasn't perfect and of course was a bit unrealistic, but I found it was less soapy and sensationalist than many shows in the genre. For me, Kate was the star. I felt like they did a good job of explaining why she took the actions she took without villifying her or making her less of a victim. I could see why she lied in many cases, and how it was a larger part of her struggle to reconcile for herself why things happened.
I really liked Jeannette from the start and didn't read into the creepiness as quickly as everyone else did, I was rooting for her the whole time (although I was also rooting for Kate). However, at the end, HOLY **** that last scene messed me up, and in a good way. It definitely changed my retrospective view of things. I also want to add that I don't think it took away from the idea that Martin was the main villain. I thought it was a good and deliberate choice to focus on Kate and Martin's episode in E9 and not show too much of Jeannette, because it allowed us to really see the shitty things Martin was doing in their own light. And his final scene with the gun, I definitely saw as more manipulative than anything. I look forward to a rewatch down the road where I focus more on Jeannette's shitty ways.
In, the finale Jeannette accused Kate of never wanting her life anyway. It sort of got me thinking about how in the end, Kate sort of ended up with parts of Jeannette's life and seemed happier for it. She was bffs with Mallory, and didn't have as wide a network or was as popular, but was fine just smoking pot with her bestie. Jeannette's and Kate's journeys were an interesting trope on "finding oneself" (I put this in quotes bc obviously it was not a good thing that any of this ever happened to Kate). Also the ways in which this happened are super juxtaposed.
A few nitpicks
I was disappointed that the show often flirted with the theme of how women are believed/portrayed in media/are in their dynamics with men, but then it just petered out. It was kind of a backslide to have Jeannette and Jamie be endgame imo, not just because their emotional connection was not at all developed, but also because it was nice to see Jamie realize what an awful person he'd been, and see him own up to it without any hope of redemption. Jeannette is a pyscho imo, but I still felt like it undid some of that to see him get the girl, especially because I thought the earlier plot point of Jamie being awful to both of them and both of them seeing that was quite powerful. There were also signs of this in other dynamics as well (Cindy, for example). It disappointed me that the show introduced it but never fully capitalized on it outside of Kate's (very valid) fears of how her actions would be viewed.
While I loved the final episode, I also wished we'd seen a little bit more of the other characters, maybe a 2 hour episode would be nice. It felt like the dynamics that had happened got thrown out a bit, which was a bummer. I wanted to see a Derek/Ashley fight, maybe see Kate confront Ashley. I wanted to see how Cindy reacted to things with the trial (before the final Jeanette reveal, ofc). I also felt like the Vince/Ben thing, while cute, was super underdeveloped and either should have been given more time or cut. I make these criticisms mostly because they populated the world really well and had a lot of nice, fleshed-out dynamics. I thought it was a bummer they abandoned most of them at the end.
Hot Takes
Maybe public opinion has changed since the initial airing of S1, but I have to say I was kind of shocked at the Mallory (and Cindy) vitriol, and kind of shocked not to see more vitriol for Greg, who, imo, was an awful parent.
Mallory was an annoying, immature teenager, but I fail to see anything truly awful that she did to Jeanette. She was bossy and pushy, but was hardly a criminal - Vince didn't seem to have a problem with her. Jeannette wanted to transcend her dorkiness and be cooler, and she felt like Mallory was dragging her down. Jeannette's constant harping on Mallory for doing things that could get them into trouble while always breaking into the house was super gaslight-y imo and just as pushy as Mallory. I felt like Jeannette's aversions to Mallory's mischief was partly because she didn't want to be associated with what she saw as Mallory's cringe. Not to say Mallory wasn't pushy or ignoring Jeannette's feelings, she was, but I think she was also picking up on Jeannette pulling away, and doubling down out of insecurity. It felt like a super normal teenage rift to me and I think they were both being kinda shitty and shallow, but ultimately not in a super evil way.
I also don't think Mallory not telling Kate about seeing her was that wrong. Imo, Mallory's friendship with Kate did not seem to start out of guilt, in fact, I don't think Mallory intended it to happen (Kate was the one who invited Mal over for her birthday in '94). It was a sharp contrast to Ashely, who eventually genuinely cared about Kate, but also clearly felt guilty for pushing her away and adding to Kate's sense of isolation. Mallory not telling Kate about seeing her seemed in part due to her not wanting to drag up Kate's story inconsistencies, out of a place of protectiveness. As a teenager, I don't know that I would have known how to tell Kate that, either. Even Jeannette pointed out that Mallory hung on to the snowglobe to protect Kate. And Mallory didn't know that this situation was the one Kate was pinning on Jeannette, so I also don't think she was super responsible for that, either. Mallory was the only teen who seemed to want to be supporting Kate because she liked Kate and didn't want anything from her besides friendship. Did I like Mallory that much? No, not for a long time. But she grew on me, I really do not get the outcry, other than I guess people are thinking she's annoying.
My final hot take is that Cindy >> Greg. Was she perfect? No. But Greg was an awful, enabling parent. He let Jeannette get away with everything, and wouldn't listen to his own wife on how she wanted to parent, always insisting Cindy was wrong. When he finally realized Jeannette broke into the house, he dealt with it reasonably well, but failed to learn from the incident that his precious little girl was capable of keeping things for him. The way he (and everyone) treated Cindy was awful, too. I'll admit, I have a soft spot for the actress from Grey's Anatomy, but it was *really* hard to watch everyone in the family hang her out to dry. Jeannette gaslit her mom just bc Cindy was onto her, then continued to pound Cindy for "leaving me" even while we know that Cindy was still trying to be in contact with Jeannette. Greg refuses to listen to her and continually dismisses her basically until Cindy puts her foot down. On their anniversary, Greg gets flowers from a cute girl and is all dopey. Then, when Cindy leaves later that night, Greg goes, "On our anniversary?" as if he actually cared. As soon as he admits Cindy was right about Jeannette (over one thing), he expects Cindy to come back, without taking any responsibility for the deeper issues she'd communicated to him. Meanwhile, he just continues to enable Jeannette then get wasted and complain about how his life sucks for sticking by her, without even trying to actually question her or hold her accountable. He has a right to be upset, but he really seems to just like to blame all the women in his life for his problems then mope around and sleep with someone who gives him free alcohol. I also really don't think Cindy "abandoned" Jeanette, she left for valid reasons and tried to find ways to still be there for her daughter. I know it was the 90's, but people split, and it's not like Jeannette wasn't lying to her continuously. I honestly just felt so bad for Cindy, and again, it was a case of just, "Why do people dislike this character for the crime of being annoying?".
Anyways, thanks for reading!

2023.06.10 22:45 is-a-bunny Over 2 years since he cheated and I left. Where I am now.
I'll give you the TLDR of what happened, but I'll also link below my original posts. We were together 2 years. We were both active sex workers, who were in an open relationship. Our only rules were honesty with one another and protection with others. He raw dogged like 6 or 7 different escorts in our community while actively lying to me. He gave me an STD and let me believe it was due to my line of work. It wasn't. What a joke.
I dated him for 2 years. I told my therapist it was the healthiest relationship I'd ever been in. He was nice to me. I grew up in abusive homes my entire life so nice was enough. He wasn't particularly... Giving or thoughtful. He didn't clean up after himself. I was sick and he wasn't... Patient or understanding, But he was nice. When we broke up I thought I'd be alone forever. I'd only encountered actively cruel men but he was nice. I thought he was the pinnacle of what I deserved.
When we broke up, I told the entire community what he had done. He had a blossoming photography business taking pictures of escorts. His only friends were people in the industry. They were quick to drop him and he lost his business, his friends, and left the escort industry. He had nothing. At the time I wasn't sure if I made the right choice. Now I know I did. He was a sexual predator and a sick Pervert. He threatened and made hints to offing himself. I felt responsible for him and checked in on him daily to make sure he was still alive. Cutting contact was the best thing I ever did. I don't even care if he's dead or alive anymore.
It's been 2 and a half years now. So what have I been doing? After the breakup, I moved back to my home town. Got myself a little one bedroom, in an admittedly shitty apartment. I reconnected with old friends, and family. They supported me mentally and emotionally, my mother supported me financially until I could get myself back to where I wanted.
I did therapy, I got my autoimmune issues sorted, I met a man... We bought a house together on 2 acres. We've got 2 cats and a new dog. On my path to health, my partner has been patient, kind, gentle, understanding. He's given me so much grace on my journey. He tells me how much he loves me, but more importantly, he shows me. I have never met anyone so committed. I have never been with someone who loves me SO much. He's nice, but he's also kind. He has a good heart. He's sensitive. He worships the ground I walk on. Our relationship is bliss.
I just... Listen. Okay. You don't have to accept someone who overlooked your physical or emotional health. You will be okay one day. You'll make it through the pain you're feeling. You have the opportunity to live a more beautiful and fulfilling life. You didn't deserve what happened to you, and the partner who hurt you doesn't deserve your forgiveness if you don't want to give it. I know my situation is unique, but it just goes to show that cheating isn't about sex. It's something sick and twisted. My boyfriend could bang whoever he wanted. I actively pushed for it and he STILL lied.
I guess I wanted to share this more for myself. I've just been feeling so grateful for the path I ended up on. We all deserve better

2023.06.10 22:45 sesame-yeezy 10 days later and it all feels so surreal still. how & why? i’m not sure i’ll ever have enough closure or answers. maybe i’m just too stubborn to want them too, idk
first off, i’m sorry in advance for posting so much in here. this place has been so lovely to vent & just tell Keegan’s story. it makes the loss feel a tiny bit less unbearable hearing all your stories as well. although i’d never wish this on anyone
Keegan passed away, rather suddenly, on June 1. i have detailed posts on my page of the timeline of events if anyone is interested in hearing more. i also wanted to link Keegan’s last report from the ER in case there’s anyone else out there who finds some relief in seeing and hearing what happened from a strictly scientific/veterinary standpoint, emotions aside. it looks like a scammy link but it’s the easiest way to share a PDF file:
https://beige-franny-63.tiiny.site the biggest questions i’m grappling with nearly a week and half later are, how & why?
how did this happen? Keegan was in incredible shape with no known cancers, ailments, etc. (besides some arthritis). hours before he started feeling unwell, he was 100% himself. and i can’t exaggerate that enough. how could in less than 20 hours could he go from just your typical senior dog to having to be put down?
if you don’t want to or haven’t read the report, essentially the neurologist was highly suspicious of a tumor within his brain that ruptured and was the cause of his rapid decline, & passing.
typing that out seems too surreal. he had a tumor in his brain that ruptured? how? even more head scratching (from my perspective of thinking he was indestructible) was he exhibited no symptoms, beyond PU/PD (excess thrust and urination) that we got treated by an internal specialist. from suspected Cushing’s disease, to diabetes insipidus, to chalking it up to “psychogenic reasons” (i.e, behavioral / mental health). we found a solution that worked. they were called DDAVP eyedrops that really gave him and us such a better quality of life these past ~2 years of his life.
but beyond that, he never showed any signs of the tumor. no seizures, no weakness in limbs, no abnormal behaviors, NOTHING! we spent Memorial Day weekend (just mere days before) walking him in parks, taking him on a picnic without an ounce of worry something was wrong.
so how could he got from his happy, curious, lovey self to death so suddenly? i did speak to his neurologist & she explained that the growth likely grew too large or even ruptured and basically led to a rapid decline. but just like that? one second he’s fine and the next it’s ruptured? i know she’s the expert who spent hundreds of thousands of dollar on her education and dedicated her life to animals, even more so with a speciality in neurology, but it just seems so unfair. and maybe because he was (and still is) the center of universes, it’ll always seem unfair. he likely couldn’t survive through an MRI or potential radiation and we had to end his suffering.
and my next question is, why? why did it have to end like this? he was 16 and lived a beautiful, long life, but we weren’t done yet. we had so much planned for the summer and beyond. why did the tumor have to rupture/bleed/spread them? he didn’t deserve that. i always thought about the end of his life as he got older in an anticipatory way, but NEVER in my life would i suspect this is how and why’d he’d go.
i know i should listen to the doctors. i spoke to his neurologist, his primary doc, a different ER doc, and even a few vets on here who have the same conclusion— there’s nothing you could’ve done more. but for some reason, i cannot accept that answer. is it my grief? probably yeah, but i feel like i have to keep chasing the answer, for him. you might think “well you have your answer right?” and logic says yes, but my heart is thinking something else had to have happened. it couldn’t be a brain tumor that was seemingly dormant for nearly 2 years. it just doesn’t add up, right?
idk, i feel like i’m losing it and everyone in my life has to keep giving me reassurance. but this vicious cycle of guilt, regret, & “what ifs” is eating me alive. i am seeking professional help to help navigate this & also am starting a support group later this week. i’m trying my best, but truthfully nothing will be able to satisfy this hole in my heart and soul. with every fiber of my being, i love Keegan so much and always will, until the day i go. i just need him to know we did everything we could for him and i hope he doesn’t feel like we failed him.
if you’ve read this post yet again. thank you, and thank you for this community existing to let us vent as freely and as vulnerably as possible. ❤️

2023.06.10 22:44 stopthemeyham One among many sending their warning.
I signed up for Calibrate in June of last year after my wife had amazing results. It took them until August to get me a 'therapist', and that 'therapist' would do about 5 minute sessions where she would just nod along and not say anything, clearly distracted. I asked for another one- took them another month. All the while I wasn't getting any medicine because of the crackdown on Mounjaro. They sent me Metformin for a single month by itself- it didn't really do anything, essentially a placebo. On month two I got sent Rybelsus, which yet again, nothing. I reported this to the new 'therapist' who told me "It just takes time" I stayed on it until my dosage went up a second time, still no results.
Conveniently I'm now past the refund window and $750 out with another $750 still owed somehow, even though I quit the program. The only weight lost was in my bank account.
I feel like an idiot for falling for this scam, and I hope anyone who is considering it sees this post and stays away.

2023.06.10 22:43 enthilzar Google Photos App faster on Pixel 6 than 7pro
Hi all, we have quite a few Pixels in our family. Yesterday, for the first time, I saw, that my old Pixel 6 I gave my wife seems to do a much better Job generating previews in the Google Photos Gallery. I just do not get 'why' because the Pixel 6's Tensor G1 should normally be slower than my Pixel 7 pro's Tensor G2.
I already cleared the cache, tried to reinstall the App but still, the 6 is a lot of faster loading previews.
Any ideas what's wrong with my 7pro?

2023.06.10 22:42 MediaVsReality The 52 Commandments of Media
Hello
nosurf A couple of years ago I posted my "Commandments of Media Use". The list originally had 24 commandments, then 38. Now, it's grown to 52, and will continue to grow.
Well, without further ado, here are The 52 Commandments of Media.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.Never to forget that light feeling. When you’ve been away from your screens for a prolonged period of time. 2. Not to underestimate the slow, psychological poison of technology. 3. Not to chase the shadows cast by your screens at the expense of your life. 4. Not to rationalise excessive technology use. 5. To always, at every opportunity, choose the real world and not the digital one. 6. Your body becomes good at what you teach it to do. If you sit still while your mind is lost in the digital world, then your body shall atrophy. After all, sitting still hunched over a computer doesn’t require much muscle tone — so your body will not provide it. 7. Your mind adapts itself to every task, including consuming media. Watching videos will create a passive mind. Social media will create an unsatisfied mind. Internet browsing creates a distracted mind. There is no “this doesn’t count” or “I just do this to relax”. For your mind, every single thing you do becomes a part of you. 8. Not to forget — that human beings are not evolved to sit in a chair and watch screens. 9. Think of those you’ve seen in old videos or in poor countries. Their light, steady gaze and easy smiles. Then think of your own twitchy gaze and stiff smile. Ponder on what you’ve lost. 10. To notice the slow of time when away from technology. 11. Think of your screen-time in days prior. And realise that almost none of it can be remembered. Time poured into a drain. 12. To always approach technology with intention. This will be your anchor as the winds and whirlpools of the digital world pull on your precious attention. 13. The creators of technology who profit from stealing your time. 14. To switch everything off — and remember how it feels to be alive. 15. Even a perfect digital world could never be as satisfying as the imperfect one you were born into. 16. If they were speaking face to face they wouldn’t act like that. 17. The light breeze. The sun on your face. A quiet walk in nature. How they’re all a thousand times more fulfilling than the superstimuli found on screens. 18. Never to digitise your human urges. 19. Incels and Hikikomoris — how technology has trapped them in a looping nightmare. 20. To always remember that the news does not represent the entirety of reality. 21. Their faces as they use their technology 22. To never click unconsciously. 23. To always, as much as possible, act the same in the digital world as you do in the real world. 24. The more dopamine induced by screens, and the higher its potency, the less reality will excite you 25. Screens are not a necessity for a fulfilled life. To think so is an illusion. 26. From the stars in the sky, to the endless detail underneath a microscope, to the strange creatures dwelling in the deepest parts of the ocean, to the emotions inside a person's eyes, no virtual world will ever carry as much detail as reality itself. 27. Like a bolt of lightning or water running downhill, human beings (like all of nature) shall always be inclined to take the path of least resistance. And technology is the fastest, most accessible path to stimulation. Yet as human beings, we have the choice to delay gratification for a greater reward down the road. Only children and dogs are unable to do so. 28. Life is perceived as short by those who spend it on screens. 29. Why do you care? Why do you feel the need to give your opinion? Why does the issue of the day require your input? Why does the business of a celebrity far away concern you? Why do you allow others to decide what you pay attention to and what you don't? 30. When has awareness of world events made you happier? And when has your mere awareness had any effect on these events? 31. Every obscure, specific fetish. Every taboo. Every new piece of pornographic content. All the same. Foot fetish porn. Femdom porn. Rough porn. Public porn. Incest porn. Trans porn. All one and the same thing, with little distinction between them. Not special. Not unique. All producing the very same chemical reaction inside the brain. 32. Gathering yet more information will not get you to where you want to go. 33. All digital experiences are incomplete versions of experiences already possible in reality. Porn an incomplete version of sex. Romantic movies an incomplete version of love. Movies and video games an incomplete version of your life's adventure. 34. No matter the number of options available to you on screens, you can only be in one room at a time. 35. They do not think you beautiful. They think the digital image of you beautiful. They love the pixels transmitted to them by their screen, not you. There's you. And then there's digital images of you. These are entirely separate entities. 36. The dazed feeling after watching television. The scattered feeling after browsing the internet. The feeling of presence when in nature. Choose. 37. The negative emotions they induce in you for their own profit. 38. Like the sheep dog herds the sheep, algorithms herd the humans. 39. If the internet were to fail, if the electricity flow were to stop, if transport grinded to a halt, if supermarkets held no food, if the world's technology failed, what would you do? 40. The more we rely on technology, the more useless we become when it ceases to function. 41. The experts tell you it's fine, or that it's no big deal. But in your heart, you know it is not. Do not so easily hand the intuition you have built during a lifetime of experience over to experts who have never met you. You know what makes you feel good and whole. And you know what makes you feel corrupted. You don't need to ask experts. You don't need it confirmed by studies. You already know. 42. The youth of millions - stolen by screens. 43. The fashion in which you interact with your screens shall determine the course of your entire life. There is nothing trivial about it at all. 44. Level up a digital character inside a digital world and your real self shall level down in direct proportion. 45. The attractive digital people you see on screens do not exist. They are merely representations of people created with pixels or ink on a page. Nothing more than phantoms. The more time you spend gazing at them, the worse your romantic life shall become. 46. Not to check your devices without purpose. When important news arrives, it will reach you. 47. Those who quarrel online do not bicker with people. Instead, they quarrel with figments of their own imagination. 48. The producer remembered and rewarded. The consumer punished and forgotten. 49. You do tomorrow as you do today. Watch porn today, you'll repeat the behaviour tomorrow. Play video games today, you'll play them tomorrow. What you do now is what you'll do in the future. If you want to change, change what you do now. Now. Now. 50. You say: “I just do this to pass the time”. But why are you “passing time” in the first place? Did you forget that your time is limited? Did you forget about your death? Now that you've remembered once again, can you still justify spending another hour on your screens? 51. Which is reality? The chaos on your screen, or the quiet peace in the room that surrounds it? 52. You become the media you consume submitted by

2023.06.10 22:42 jtwlson2 I (32m) have never seen/met/talked to/ or interacted with my father in any way… and it still bothers me.
So, let me first preface this with I don’t want anyone to feel bad or sorry for me. I generally don’t talk about this because I don’t want people’s sympathy, I just want someone to listen… or no one to listed and for me to just vent lol.
My father had an affair with my mother and I was the outcome from it. Through out my mom’s pregnancy he would send her letters saying he was going to leave his wife and bring his other kids to start a life with her “for real” but those were all lies to comfort my mother. When push came to shove the day I was born my mother and my father had a contractual agreement that my mom would never force my father to pay child support and in return he would never be allowed to have custody of me. This was to ensure that his family would never find out about his bastard child, which to this day they still don’t know I am assuming. My mother never dated anyone else and to this day has remained single.
When I was a young child through grade school I was bullied pretty severely because I did not have a father. Kids are mean is all I can say lol 🤷♂️ but this caused me to have a less than ideal relationship with my mother because she refused to tell me anything about why my father wasn’t around until I was an adult. My mother kept all of the letters that her and my father sent back and forth while they were apart for the roughly three years that they were having an affair and I stumbled upon them when I was 15. From that time I completely resented my mother for her decision making, I hated myself for representing their lust for each other, I hated my father for obvious reasons. When I turned 18 I left home to go to college and the relationship continued to deteriorate with my mother until we completely stopped interacting and she moved across the country.
My early 20’s were nothing but struggles. Periods of couch surfing, consistently working 2-3 jobs just to try and make ends meet. I dropped out of college after two years because I couldn’t balance working 60-80 hours a week and making all of my classes. This really was my low point in life, and I was dealing with it using alcohol and elicit narcotics.
After a near death experience I completely changed my approach on life. My work ethic had never wavered, the day to day struggles to pay my bills and keep a roof over my head we’re real but I chose a route of forgiveness instead of resentment. My late 20’s were spent trying to rebuild relationships with my mother and my true friends. I managed to go back to and finish college utilizing some tuition reimbursement benefits for the company I was and still am working for today.
Fast forward to present day, I live a sober life with better but not perfect relationship with my mother. We don’t talk about my childhood or my father at all because there is still bad blood there that I can’t forgive so I try to forget. In reality, I still struggle with my existence. I still struggle to understand how my mother and father thought this was okay or was the best outcome. I am pretty confident I will always be bitter about this and have accepted that I will never understand. I choose to try and be a better person and to learn from the mistakes that I represent being alive.
There is no real reason for posting this other than it’s been on my mind a lot and I needed a place to compartmentalize my thoughts and just vent. 😊

2023.06.10 22:36 Tervia Should /r/evnova join the blackout in protest of Reddit's API changes?
tl;dr Reddit's shutting down third party apps at the expense of usability and in the name of profit, and is acting like the Bureau in the process. Should we join the sitewide blackout starting on June 12th, be it for 48 hours or indefinitely, to pressure reddit to rescind these changes so that third party apps may continue? Hiya,
As you're probably aware, many subreddits will be shutting down on June 12th through the 14th in protest of recent API changes announced by Reddit. These will charge relatively high rates above a certain threshold, similar to Twitter, and would have the effect of killing major third party Reddit apps. Reddit is not obligated to run features at cost, of course. And if the API is a financial burden, then it seems appropriate to have larger users share the burden. But charging rates that would be likely be several times in excess of what the average user brings Reddit in ad revenue, while forbidding third party apps from running ads of their own, makes it clear that they do not want to share the financial load. They want to kill competition to their official app. People who use third party mobile apps trust their app of choice over the official one for better user experience, mod tools, or accessibility features, and the official one demands much more of your personal data. The official reddit app does not play nice with screen readers on iOS, so those who are visually impaired have to rely on third party reddit apps instead. Even if you don't use a third party app, there's a good chance that a poster or commenter you liked does. One of the third party apps, Apollo, even got a name drop and other shoutouts by Apple in their latest Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, To lose these apps would be a loss to the community.
Reddit's "PR" Campaign
In the process to rolling this out, Reddit has not enkindled much, if any, goodwill, I'd argue. They've gone to blame the developer of iOS third party app Apollo of "excessive" API overuse despite staying within currently sanctioned limits. They have accused the same app developer of "threatening" reddit:
Steve (Steve Huffman, i.e. spez, Reddit CEO) : "Apollo threatened us, said they’ll “make it easy” if Reddit gave them $10 million."
Steve: "This guy behind the scenes is coercing us. He's threatening us."
Even after Reddit admitted on a recorded phone call that said perception was a misunderstanding:
Christian Selig (i.e. iamthatis, Apollo app developer): "I said 'If you want Apollo to go quiet'. Like in terms of- I would say it's quite loud in terms of its API usage."
Reddit: "Oh. Go quiet as in that. Okay, got it. Got it. Sorry."
Reddit: "That's a complete misinterpretation on my end. I apologize. I apologize immediately."
And then accused the same developer of gaslighting the community... with no evidence presented:
Steve: His “joke” is the least of our issues. His behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different externally; recording and leaking a private phone call—to the point where I don’t know how we could do business with him.
Christian: Please feel free to give examples where I said something differently in public versus what I said to you. I give you full permission.
It would have honestly felt better if they were just announcing that they were killing third party app access outright. But instead, we've been presented with a pricing structure that looks like it was meant specifically to kill third party apps, them acting like that isn't, and accusing third party app devs of being incompetent instead of asking themselves why others would want to use apps that aren't theirs in the first place. spez's latest AMA yesterday is only more salt in the wound, offering only token concessions so that a few accessibility-focused third party apps can continue unharmed, while other third party apps have announced their shutdowns because of these changes:
Apollo (iOS app): Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️
Reddit is Fun (Android app): RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes
Sync for Reddit (Android app): Sync will shut down on June 30, 2023
Relay for Reddit (Android app): The pricing is prohibitively expensive and it cannot be ad supported. And, even if you paid a subscription fee of several dollars a month to continue to use Relay, you still wouldn't have access to any NSFW content in it. My opinion is that they want third party apps gone despite saying otherwise.
The Bigger Picture
And these changes are not being done in a vacuum. Reddit has made other changes to take features away from this site and what people have built on top of it. Namely:
Spez said in the latest AMA that old.reddit, the original desktop website for reddit, isn't going away. Then again, Spez also said years ago that "The API isn't going anywhere", and while it isn't going away, it is going towards places that will be worse for us all. That, combined with a list of broken promises, as compiled by the mods of /AskHistorians, makes Reddit's word as solid as Drop Bear Repellent is effective, in my eyes (though Reddit has been making improvements, in fairness).
Should we do something in response to this?
Now, that brings things to this sub.
/evnova is a very niche subreddit. While new reddit is happy to claim we are within the top 20% of subreddits in size, we are ultimately about a 20+ year old series of abandonware single player games. Modders and wiki editors like SharkyNebula and developers like Peter Cartwright with Cosmic Frontier: Override keep this series alive, but things are generally quiet for the most part.
Over 4,000 subreddits have announced some form of shutdown in protest of Reddit's API changes. Most people on this website probably don't know this subreddit even exists, but together with several default subs, I am open to joining as a means to show that we are willing to sacrifice our place here in the hopes that the collective pressure with other subs will compel reddit to revise or rescind these changes, so that major third party apps may continue to exist and that their users - members of all the communities around us - may continue to enjoy them. As a site dependent on user content and volunteer moderation, Reddit is nothing without its userbase, and with a show of protest and maybe some bad press, perhaps Reddit will change their mind. If it doesn't work, then, well, it'll beat doing nothing and having it happen anyways, and I guess that'll shows how much reddit values you, the user. And with comments from the CEO like:
We’ll continue to be profit-driven until profits arrive. Unlike some of the 3P apps, we are not profitable.
If this goes through unabated, what feature will reddit put on the chopping block next?
Now, with all this wall of text said, I have said many times that I am an absentee mod here. I do not believe that I have the authority to unilaterally shut down the subreddit. So I come here to ask you, the memberbase: Should we join the subreddit blackout, be it for 48 hours or indefinitely until Reddit backtracks on their changes and allows major 3rd party apps to continue?
Please leave your feedback here. A decision will be made in no more than 24 hours based on what you think and say.
Thank you,
Tervia

2023.06.10 22:34 zeemeerman2 Newbie GM Questions: Skill check procedure in exploration mode
I want to GM Pathfinder 2e, but I have some questions first that aren't clear to me—regarding exploration mode and skill usage.
I have been reading AON, but I have not yet bought the Core rulebooks. I have bought the Beginner Box.
My background comes from D&D, but I then dabbled in PbtA and Blades in the Dark. I learned a lot of lessons from those games that I want to incorporate into the trad game of Pathfinder 2e. But I am also reminded of the careful balance put by the devs in the game; balance that might clash with the established lessons learned from Apocalypse engine games and Blades.
So I don't really know what to do. Redditors of the internet, I ask of you these questions thee. Please help me.
Most of these questions have a between-the-lines question attached that I would want to have answered: "what is the intent here?"
- I assume in a regular game session, you switch continuously between Encounter Mode and Exploration Mode. The default mode is Exploration Mode, you encounter enemies and enter Encounter Mode. Finishing up combat, you go back to Exploration Mode, until you encounter another set of enemies and enter Encounter Mode again. You are not staying in Encounter Mode exploring an entire dungeon. Are my assumptions here correct?
If my assumption is not correct, may I assume instead there is this floating free-form roleplay happening, with sometimes the game zooming in to Encounter Mode and sometimes going to a defined Exploration Mode, after which you return to the free-form no-explicit-mode roleplay thing?
- The game rules have a paragraph about failing forward. This is contrasted by many Skill actions (such as Climb) that have blank fail states. Should I fill these blank fail results in with narrative Consequences?
"As you try to climb this wall, you accidentally grab a part of a loose rock. It crumbles and falls down, revealing a small cavern. Inside, a group of bats and behind them, a treasure chest. As the loose rocks fall down, they make noise, waking up the bats. Roll initiative. Yes, while climbing."
I do understand that in Encounter Mode, nothing happening means you still lose an Action. Which might mean the enemy can get an extra turn in and attack you. There is still risk, even without immediate consequence. My question refers to Exploration mode here.
- Should consequences, if added, always have to relate to the skill itself? Rock climbing and loose rocks. As an alternative, the environment can take an action as a consequence instead; separate from the actual skill check made. Rock climbing and as a consequence, a guard noticing the PCs climbing.
- Should I also add consequences to a critical fail, even when they are defined and in addition to their effects? E.g. "You fall down."
A fail can be interpreted as a partial success rather than a miss. You do what you want to do, but there is a consequence. This partial success is in reference to a fail often meaning you still deal half damage, rather than no damage.
When I speak of consequences, I have a policy to never ever make it seem like a PC does something stupid, like many fumble card rules seem to imply. This is often achieved by pure narrative. A sword does not slip out of the PC's hands. Instead, the PC makes an accurate attack, but the goblin flicks the sword out of the PC's hand at the last second. The PC is a competent combatant, but sadly for them, so is the goblin.
- The Beginner Box asks the GM to have players roll skill checks. Reading AON, there seems to be a bigger focus on Skill actions, almost to the point that one can read that skill checks don't even exist and it's Skill actions only. What is the intended idea here?
- Are Skill checks/actions intended as a fiction-first move or a mechanics-first action?
In this context, with fiction-first play I mean that a player tells what they do in the fiction first and conveys their intent, then the GM tells them what they should roll based on what they do and with which intent.
Player: "I want to climb on top of this Giant to get to the top of the wall."
GM: "That sounds like a Climb action to me."
Player: "I want to climb on top of this Halfling to squash them with my weight."
GM: "That sounds like a Strike action to me."
In mechanics-first play, the player chooses the Action they want to take first, making what happens in the fiction fluff that can be ignored.
Player: "I attack the goblin. Does a 17 hit?"
Especially with Skill actions, are they intended to be triggered from fiction or are they chosen by players as actual actions?
- Before a roll is made, are take-backsies and back-and-forths with the GM possible?
- Can players choose the Skill check/action or is the GM the decider of the roll made? In the next example, the GM sets the DC, but does not choose the skill check.
Player: "I'm using Acrobatics to climb swiftly on this wall."
GM: "Okay, make a DC 20 roll."
Player: "That sounds like a lot. How about I just be careful and use Athletics instead?"
GM: "Okay, then make a roll against DC 15 instead."
- Are there any guidelines for GM moves as improvised consequences? Like "Deal 1d6 damage is fine, 10d6 damage is too much. Never split the party as a consequence. You may take away a resource, such as a torch, or a spellbook, but only temporarily."
- Should all lethal fights be happening in Encounter Mode? Or can I assume when the Rogue assassinates the Guard from the shadows, they can do so as a single action in Exploration Mode; keeping Encounter Mode for the big fights and boss battles only? If not, I assume trying to kill the Guard always sets up Encounter Mode and initiative is rolled.
Failing the assassination might make the Guard ready for combat as a consequence, and still trigger Initiative rolls. In which the Guard is most likely going to call for backup.
- Bonus question: Can Encounter Mode be used for other things than physical combat? I am thinking of using it as an interrogation, with Strikes be representing telling facts, and the victim being at 0 hp representing them finally giving up their secrets; while still being alive and well. Or hp representing the trust the public has in the politician as you talk down the politician in a political debate.
Or is Encounter mode specifically reserved for physical usually-lethal combat?
Thank you all for reading. My apologies for the strange sentence structure; English is not my first language.
Any questions answered, even if not all, will still be a big help.

[Scene opens in the dining hall of an ancient castle]
[SFX: Baroque music/dining ambiance - Medieval]
[A man sits at the head of a royal dining hall, raising a glass in a toast]
[P] “Attention, my esteemed guests.”
[SFX: The chatter dying immediately]
[Pause]
[P] “I just wanted to give thanks to all of the Ancients who joined in my celebration tonight. The rest will die, hmhm, but that’s for later. Let us celebrate another step in my rise to perfection. A cheers to you, Grim, for being kind enough to make a deal with me.”
[Pause]
[At the end of the table, the Grim Reaper himself raises a goblet]
[G] “A cheers to the first vampire, our immortal Primus.”
[SFX: A cheer being given]
[Primus reclines on his throne, pleased as a cat that knocked an urn off the shelf]
[P] “Mmh… What a ride. Born the first and grown to be the most powerful entity on the planet. The seas of blood, the desperate pleas, the satisfaction one gets when the genocide is done and you can focus your attention elsewhere… Well, I feel quite spoiled.”
[Pause]
[SFX: Some polite laughter]
[P] “Hmhm… We Ancients are the most powerful things here. Driven by a need to grow in power! And I daresay, my dysfunctional little family, that we’ve done very well for ourselves. I mean, I think I deserve to brag about having my soul eternally preserved by the Grim Reaper himself, don’t you?”
[SFX: Murmurs of affirmation]
[P] “Thank you. I know you have to flatter me by proxy, but you’ve all been doing it with such gusto lately! I do appreciate it… So sorry I had to gut a few of you to get the point across but, hey, you know how it is.”
[SFX: More laughter]
[P] “So, a toast. To power and domination! To a thousand more years of culling the weak!”
[G] “Here here.”
[SFX: A cheethe music and ambiance fading back in while they resume their feast]
[Pause]
[After a moment, a young man pokes his head nervously into the hall]
[B] “A-Ah… Sire?”
[P] “Bernard, my favorite butler who is still alive! What can I do for you?”
[Pause]
[B, confused] “Sire? You appear to have a guest.”
[The Ancients all pause in their conversation, their King resting his cheek in his palm]
[P] “Oh? And what exactly is it this mysterious guest wants of the most powerful man on the planet?”
[Pause]
[The butler leans his head back for a moment and then pokes it back inside, infinitely paler]
[B] “...They said they are here to kill you, Sire.”
[Pause]
[SFX: The fire dipping briefly]
[There is silence at the table before the vampires all burst into laughter]
[P] “Oh my! And here I thought my guest of honor would be the one saying those words, eh, Grim?”
[G, chuckling] “It is a bit early in the evening, Primus… I haven’t touched my food yet.”
[Pause]
[P, still chuckling] “Oh, I do love a good prank… Alright. Why not? I do love my food fresh as possible."
[B] “Y-Yes, Sire.”
[The butler steps aside and allows you to enter]
[SFX: A coffin dragging across the ground]
[You walk into the dining hall of the Ancients and face Primus and his family]
[Pause]
[The First Vampire extends his arms, power making the room shake]
[P] “Well… Look at you. A ragged little thing with a ragged little shovel, shouldering a coffin on their ragged little back, hmhm. Trying to intimidate me, perhaps? Make me think, ‘Oh no, Death is coming for me!’. You may wish to wait until the man himself finishes eating.”
[...]
[The God of Death lets out a chuckle and raises a goblet in a toast]
[G] “Yes, do forgive me… I’m not really here to kill anyone tonight and, even if you could hurt Primus, I’ve agreed to safeguard his presence on this plane. After all… Someone must always be the strongest.”
[...]
[SFX: A swarm of crows cawing and flying outside]
[P] “Oh, look. It finally moved its head a little. Nice of you to-”.
[You break from your slow, rigid walk with a grunt. Before any of them can move, think, or react, you grasp the shovel and point it towards Death itself]
[G] “Ohoho… pointing that rusted little shovel at me? Did you literally just walk in here to die, little No Name?”
[SFX: The crows cawing getting loudeindecipherable whispering]
The strong
[SFX: The Listener clanging their shovel against the coffin once]
The weak
[SFX: The crows and whispers growing louder]
There is no difference
[P, laughing madly] “Oh, look at the show it's putting on! Crows and ravens blotting out the moonlight, conjuring mad little whispers! Adorable… But you must realize-”.
[SFX: CLANG]
[The other Ancients recoil as you connect the shovel to the coffin once more]
An’ anatas ver’is…
[Death, somehow, pales. He stands, sweat pouring out of his brow]
[G] “W…What is this?!”
[SFX: CLANG]
[P] “Grim…? What’s gotten into you?”
[G, panicking] “I-I don’t know this feeling, I don’t understand! M-My hands are shaking, I cannot breathe, I-I…”
[SFX: CLANG]
[G, screaming] “STOP! PLEASE!”
[P] “Grim! Get a hold of yourself, you’re the God of Death!”
[Grim stumbles back, almost clawing at his chest in sheer, desperate adrenaline]
[G] “PLEASE!!!”
[P] “GRIM-!”
[SFX: CLANG!!!]
[The last hit rings out across the dining hall and the Grim Reaper screams once more, his entire essence bursting into long-cooled ash]
[SFX: Something akin to paper burning and crumbling to ash]
[Pause]
[There is silence in the hallway as the Grim Reaper crumbles to ash, screams faded into the night]
[P] “...You… killed him…”
[SFX: Clang]
[Primus flinches. It’s subtle but enough. You see weakness. Smell it]
Run
[The Ancient sitting to his right stands, taking a few steps back]
[P] “Xander, hold your ground!”
[X] “...It just killed Death itself…”
[P] “If you dare show cowardice-!”
[G] “THERE IS NO COWARDICE IN TRYING TO PRESERVE YOURSELF, YOU FOOL! I am your general, you have trusted my decisions for eons! So swallow your damned pride and call for a retreat until we can figure out what we’re dealing with!!’
[SFX: Clang!]
Run
[Pause]
[SFX: CLANG!]
Run
[P] “...Call the retreat!”
[SFX: The crows and whispering escalating]
[The Ancients rise in a flurry, wings spreading as they try and head a retreat]
[X] “Move, MOVE! It’s weighed down by the coffin, use speed to your advantage!!”
[...]
[SFX: Bones cracking into place]
[P, lingering] “What is it doing?!”
[X] “It’s gone down to all fours… Maybe it’s winded?”
[SFX: The coffin rapidly scraping across the ground/arachnid-like movements]
[P] “FUCKING HELL-!” “
[X] “GO, PRIMUS!”
[The general shoves him out of the way as you rapidly advance on all fours, darting between tables, silverware, from wall to the ceiling]
[Pause]
Run
[Primus flies back as you pounce Xander, staring down into the general’s face]
[X, quiet/desperate] “Gods preserve me… It has no face-!”
[P] “XANDER!”
[X] “RUN, PRIMUS!”
[SFX: Vampiric wings flapping en masse and desperately]
[The others flee rapidly, almost stumbling over themselves while Gregor lies still beneath you, stoic still]
[X] “...Do it, then! Finish me off!”
[...]
[You lean down close to his ear, forming a mouth so you can speak]
[SFX: Flesh rending/rearranging/forming, if desired]
Anat’oros eslin veris.
[With that, you let him up, rising to your full height and slinging the coffin on your back]
[X] “...Is that the message you wish me to tell Primus?”
[...]
[You say nothing. You turn toward where Primus fled and begin another laborious walk after your target]
[X] “Wait! Why are you doing this?!”
[Again, you say nothing. You must move forward]
[...]
[SFX: A gradually fading series of ‘clangs’ from the Listener tapping their shovel on the ground]
[To be continued]
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anat’oros eslin veris.
They, who tills the field. They, who sings to the universe and hear its song in return.
Know well the shadow that stretches in their wake
And that shadow shall project from their deeds and word
A Destroyer, without a Songbird
To wake them from their dreams of grandeur and godhood
That shadow follows eternally
The projection of the one given everything and all they’ve done

2023.06.10 22:31 JoshAsdvgi THE SNAKE MYTH
| THE SNAKE MYTH A Hopi Legend At Tokóonavi, north of the Grand Canyon, lived people who were then not yet Snake people. They lived close to the bank of the river. The chief's son often pondered over the Grand Canyon and wondered where all that water went to. "That must certainly make it very full somewhere," he thought to himself. So he spoke to his father about it. ''So that is what you have been thinking about," the latter said. "Yes," his son answered, "I want to go and examine it." The father gave his consent and told his son that he should make a box for himself that would be large enough for him to get into, and he should arrange it so that all openings in the box could be closed. This the boy did, making also a long pole (according to others a long báho), with which he could push the box in case it became fast or tangled up anywhere. When he was ready he took a lot of báhos and some food, went into the box, and allowed himself to be pushed into the water, on which he then floated along. Finally he came to the ocean, where he drifted against an island. He found the house of Spider Woman (Kóhk'ang Wuhti) here, who called him to come to her house. He went over and found that he could not get through the opening leading to her house. "How shall I get in?" he said; "the opening is too small." She told him to enlarge it. This he did and then entered. He told her a story and gave her a báho, and said that he had come after beads, etc. She pointed to another kiva away out in the water and said that there were some beads and corals there. but that there were some wild animals guarding the path to it. "If you had not informed me, how could you have succeeded in getting there and how would you have gotten back? But I shall go with you," she said, "because you have given me a báho, for which I am very glad." She then gave the young man some medicine and seated herself behind his right ear. He spurted the medicine over the water and immediately a road like a rainbow was formed from the dwelling of Spider Woman to the other kiva. On this they went across the water. As they approached the kiva to which they were going they first encountered a panther, who growled fiercely. The young man gave him a green báho and spurted some medicine upon him, which quieted him. A little farther on they met a bear, whom they quieted in the same manner. Still farther on they came upon a wildcat, to which they also handed a báho, which quieted the animal. Hereupon they met a gray wolf, and finally a very large rattle-snake (K'áhtoya), both of which they appeased in the same manner as the others. They then arrived at the kiva, where they found at the entrance a bow standard (Aoát nátsi). They then descended the ladder and found in the kiva many people who were dressed in blue kilts, had their faces painted with specular iron (yaláhaii), and around their necks they wore many beads. The young man sat down near the fireplace, Spider Woman still being seated on his ear, but no one spoke. The men looked at him, but remained silent. Presently the chief got a large bag of tobacco and a large pipe. He filled the latter and smoked four times. He then handed the pipe to the young man and said: "Smoke and swallow the smoke." The swallowing of the smoke was a test: any one not being able to do that was driven off. Spider Woman had informed the young man about this test, so he was posted. When he commenced to smoke she whispered to him: "Put me behind you." This he did in an unobserved manner, so when he swallowed the smoke she immediately drew the smoke from him and blew it away, and hence he did not get dizzy. The men who did not observe the trick were pleased and said to him: ''All right, you are strong; you are certainly some one. Thank you. Your heart is good: you are one of us; you are our child." "Yes." he said, and handed them some red nakwákwosis and a single green báho with red points, such as are still made in Shupaúlavi in the Antelope society. They then became very friendly, saving that the were very happy over the báhos. On the walls of the kiva were hanging many costumes made of snake skins. Soon the chief said to the people: "Let us dress up now," and turning to the young man bid him to turn away so that he would not see what was going on. He did so, and when he looked back again the men had all dressed up in the snake costumes and had turned into snakes, large and small, bull- snakes, racers, and rattle-snakes, that were moving about on the floor hissing, rattling, etc. While he had turned away and the snake People had been dressing themselves, Spider Woman had whispered to him that they were now going to try him very hard, but that he should not be afraid to touch the snakes; and she gave him many instructions. Among those present in the kiva had also been some pretty maidens who had also put on snake costumes and had turned into serpents. One of them had been particularly handsome. The chief had not turned into a snake, and was sitting near the fireplace. He now turned to the young man and said to him: "You go now and select and take one of these snakes." The snakes seemed to be very angry and the young man got frightened when they stared at him, but Spider Woman whispered to him not to be a coward, nor to be afraid. The prettiest maiden had turned into a large yellow rattle-snake (Sik'á-tcua), and was especially angry. Spider Woman whispered to the young man, that the one that acted so very angrily was the pretty maiden and that he should try to take that one. He tried, but the snake was very wild and fierce. "Be not afraid," Spider Woman whispered, and handed him some medicine. This he secretly chewed and spurted a small quantity of it on the fierce snake, whereupon it immediately became docile. He at once grabbed it, held and stroked it four times upward, each time spurting a little medicine on it, and thus freeing it from its anger. The chief was astonished and said: "You are very something, thanks. Now, look away again." He did so and when he turned back he saw that all the snakes had assumed the forms of men and women again, including the maiden that he had captured. They now were all very good to him, and talked to him in the kindest manner, because they now considered him as initiated and as one of them. He was now welcome, and the chief invited him to eat. The mána whom the young man had taken got from another room in the kiva some bread made of fresh corn-meal, some peaches, melons, etc., and set this food before the young man. Spider Woman whispered to the young -man to give her something to eat too, which he did secretly. She enjoyed the food very much and was very happy. Now the chief asked the man why he came, etc. "I hunt a lólomat kátcit (good life) and was thinking about the water running this way, and so this way it runs. I have come also to get Hopi food from here. I also heard that there lives a woman here somewhere, the Hurúing Wuhti, from whom I want beads." "What have you for her?" they asked. "These báhos," he said. "All right, you will get there. But now you sleep here." But Spider Woman wanted to get back. He told them that he wanted to go out a little while. Then he went and took Spider Woman home, and put her down. She invited him to come and eat with her. She had a pövö'lpik'i off which she lived and which never gave out, but he left her and returned to the Snake kiva, where he was welcomed and called brother and son-in-law (möö'nangwuu), although he had not yet married, but only caught the mána. So he remained there. That evening and night the chief told him all about the Snake cult, altar, etc., etc., and instructed him how he must put this up, and do that, when he would return. He did not sleep that night. In the morning he again went out on the same excuse as the previous evening, and went to Spider Woman, who went out. She made a rainbow road into the ocean to a high bluff where Hurúing Wuhti lived, and to which they ascended on a ladder. They went in and found an old hag, but on all the walls many beads, shells, etc. The woman said nothing. The young man gave her the báhos, then she, said faintly, "Áskwali!" (Thanks!) At sundown she went into a side chamber and returned a very pretty maiden with fine buffalo and wildcat robes, of which she made a bed, and after having fed him, invited him to sleep with her on the bed. Then Spider Woman ,whispered he should comply with her request, then he would win her favor and get the beads. So he did as requested. In the morning he awoke and found by his side an old hag, snoring. He was very unhappy, He stayed all day, the hag sitting bent up all day. In the evening the change, etc., that occurred on the previous day was repeated, but the hag after this remained a pretty maiden. He remained four days and nights with Hurúing Wuhti, who is the deity of the hard substances. After four days he wanted to go home, so she went into a room on the north side and got a turquoise bead; then from a room west the same: from a room South a reddish bead (cátsni); from one east, a hard white bead (hurúingwa), a shell. Then she gave him a few of all kinds of beads and told him to go home now, but charging him not to open the sack, because if he did they would be gone, and if he did not they would increase. "You go to the Snakes, who will give you clothes, food, etc." He then returned to the Snake kiva. There he staved four days and four nights, sleeping with his wife. When he was ready to go home the chief said: "Take this mána with you. You have won us. Take it all with you, take of our food. Practice the ceremonies there that I told you about. This woman will bear you children and then you will be many and they will hold this ceremony for you." So they started. At Spider Woman's house he told his wife, ''You stay here. I will go to the rear." So he went to Spider Woman's house and she asked: ''Well, did you get the mána?" "Yes," he said. "Well, you take everything along." But she forbid him to touch his wife while they would be on the way, as then his beads would disappear and also his wife. So they started. The beads were as yet not heavy. During the night they slept separately. In the morning they found that the beads had increased, and they kept increasing as they went along the next day. The next night they spent in the same way. They were anxious to see whether the beads and shells had increased, but did not dare to do so. The third night was again spent, and the contents of the bag increased the same as the previous two nights. The bag with the beads and shells now became very heavy and the young man was very anxious to see them, but his wife forbade him to open the sack. The fourth night was spent in the same manner, and when they arose in the morning the sack was nearly full and was very heavy. Spider Woman had also put some strings into the bag with the beads, and the beads were strung onto these strings a,; they kept increasing. They now approached the home of the young man, and the latter was very anxious to get home in order to see the contents, of the sack, so they traveled on. When they had nearly one more day's travel to make the sack had become full. During the last night the man opened the sack, although his wife remonstrated most energetically. He took out many of the finest beads and shells and spread them on the floor before them, put them around his neck, and was very happy. So they retired for the night. In the morning they found that all the beads except those which Hurúing Wuhti had given to the man had disappeared. Hence the Hopi have so few beads at the present day. If that man had at that time brought home with him all the beads which he had, they would have many. So when they arrived at home they were very despondent. At that time only the Divided or Separated Spring (Bátki) clan and the Pö'na (a certain cactus) clan lived at that place, but with the arrival of this young couple a new clan, the Snake clan, had come to the village. Soon this new woman bore many children. They were snakes who lived in the fields and in the sand. They grew very rapidly and went about and played with the Hopi children, whom they sometimes bit. This made the Hopi very angry and they said: "This is not good," and drove them off, so they were very unhappy. The woman said to her husband: "You take our children back to my home and there we shall go away from here alone." Then the man's father made báhos, gave them to his son, who put all the snakes with the báhos into his blanket and took them back to his wife's home, and there told the Snake people why he brought their children and the báhos. They said it was all right. Hence the Snake priests, when carrying away the snakes from the plaza after the snake dance, take with them and deposit with the snakes some báhos, so that they should not themselves return to the village. When the Snake man returned to his village lit and his wife traveled south- eastward, stopping at various places. All at once they saw smoke in the distance, and when they went there they found a village perched son the mesa. This was the village of Wálpi. They at once went to the foot of the mesa on which Wálpi was situated and announced their presence. So the village chief went down to them from the mesa, and asked what they wanted. They asked to be admitted to the village, promising that they would assist the people in the ceremonies. The chief at first showed himself unwilling to admit then), but finally gave his consent and took them up to the village. From that time the woman bore human children instead of little snakes. These children and their descendants became the Snake clan, of whom only very few are now living. Soon also the Bátki and Pö'na clan came to Wálpi and found admittance to the village. At Wálpi the Snake people made the first Snake típoni, Snake altar, etc., and had the first Snake ceremony. From here the Snake cult spread to the other villages, first to Shongópavi, then to Mishóngnovi, and then to Oraíbi. At the first Snake ceremony the Snake chief sent his nephew to the north, to the west, to the south, and to the east to hunt snakes. He brought some from each direction, The chief then hollowed out a piece of báho, made of cottonwood root. Into this he put the rattles of three of the snakes and the fourth snake entirely. He then inserted into it a corn-ear, and tied to it different feathers of the eagle, the oriole, blue-bird, parrot, magpie, Ásya, and topóckwa, winding a buckskin String around these feathers. When he had made this típoni, the first ceremony was celebrated, and afterwards it took place regularly. submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.06.10 22:29 JoshAsdvgi The Sly Young Man
| The Sly Young Man There were two brothers, one married, the other unmarried. The married one lived in one place; the unmarried one, in another. They did not want to live together. One time the unmarried brother wanted to visit the married one. When he approached his house, he listened, and thought, "Why, my brother and his wife are talking and laughing quite merrily." When he came nearer, however, he noticed that the man's voice was not that of his brother. So he crept along the wall very cautiously, and then looked through a rent in the skin covering. A strange man was having quite a merry time with his sister-in-law. They were hugging and kissing, and talking and playing with each other. He thought, "My brother is not here. Probably he is off hunting wild reindeer." The others meanwhile took off their breeches to and made love right before him, though unaware of his presence. At the most critical moment the young man entered the house. The woman, however, shook herself free, swifter than a she-ermine, and in a moment the man too was hidden beneath the blanket. The young man said nothing. He simply sat down and waited for the evening. The other man, the one hidden under the blanket, having nothing else to do, also waited. Late in the evening, the married brother came home. The unmarried brother said nothing to him about the strange man hidden in the house, the woman also said nothing; but both were silent and very anxious. The married brother said, "Listen, wife! Our brother has come to visit us. Cook plenty of the best meat and reindeer-fat, and we will have a hearty meal . The visiting brother said nothing, and waited, as before. The woman cooked some meat, and taking it out of the kettle, carved it with great care and spread the meal. The married brother said, "Come on! Let us eat!" The other answered, "How can we eat, since a strange man is hidden in our house?" The married brother said, "Then I shall look for him in every corner, and certainly I shall find him." He did so, searching all through the house, but found nothing. Then he said again, "So it was a joke of yours. Come on! Let us have a meal!" The unmarried brother said, as before, "How can we have a meal? A strange man is hidden in the house." The same happened three successive times. At last the unmarried brother said, "Leave me alone! How can we have a meal? A strange man is hidden in your bed, and covered with your own blankets." The married brother pulled off the blanket. The strange man was lying there, face downward. His head was under the pillow. The married brother felt very angry. He drew his knife and with a single blow, cut off the head of the adulterer. Then he came to himself and said with great sorrow, "Oh, brother! – and you, woman! You ought to have warned me in time. Now, what is to be done? I have killed a man. What will happen to us?" He sat down and cried most wretchedly. The other brother said, "What of it? There is no need of crying. He has been killed, and we cannot change it. It is better that I carry off the body and dispose of it." He took the body and carried it off. After sometime he found the tracks of the killed man and followed them up. He came to a beaten road, and then to a large village. It had numerous houses, some of them Tungus, and some Yakut. They had herds of reindeer and also of horses. In the middle of the village stood a large house just like a hill. It was the house of the chief of the village. The unmarried brother arrived there in the night time and soon found the house of the killed man. He entered at once, carrying the corpse on his back. The parents of the killed one, an old man and an old woman, were sleeping on the right hand side of the house. The bed of their son was on the left hand side. He went to the bed, put down the body, and covered it with a skin blanket. He tucked in the folds with great care, and then placed the head in its proper place, so that he looked just like a man sleeping. The old man, and the old woman heard a rustling sound and thought, "Ah, it is our son! He has come home." Then the father said, "Ah, it is you! Why are you so late?" In another corner slept the elder brother of the killed man and his wife. He also said, "Why are you so late? You ought to be asleep long ago." The man who had carried in the corpse crept softly out of the house and went home. He came to his married brother, who said, "Ah, it is you! You are alive. And what have you done with the body?" – "I carried it to the house of his parents and put it down on his own bed. He ought to have slept on it long ago." After that they had a meal. Then the unmarried brother said again, "I will go back and see what happened to the dead body." – "Do not go! This time they will surely kill you." – "They will not kill me. I shall go and see." He would not listen to his married brother, and went back to the house of the dead man. He approached, and heard loud wailing. The relatives of the killed man were lamenting over the body. He entered and saluted the old man. Then modestly he sat down at the women's place. The old man said, "I never saw such a face in our village. Certainly, you are a stranger, a visitor to our country." – "I am," said the young man. "And why are you lamenting in this wise?" – "We have good reason for it," said the old man. "Two sons we had, and now we have lost one of them. He used to walk in the night time, heaven knows where. Then he grew angry with us and in that angry mood he cut off his own head. After that he lay down, covered himself with a blanket, and then he died. So you see we have good reasons for lamenting." They had a meal and then some tea. After that the old man said, "We have no shamans in our village, although it is large. Perhaps you know of some shaman in your own country?" – "Yes," said the young man, "I know of one." He lied once more. He did not know of any shaman. "Ah!" said the old man, brightening up, "if that is so, go and bring him here." He asked them for two horses, – one for himself, and another for the shaman whom he was to bring. "I will ride one horse, and the other I will lead behind with a halter for the shaman." He rode off without aim and purpose, for he knew of no shaman. After a long while he came to a lonesome log cabin. Some wolflings were playing before the entrance. He entered. An old wolf-woman was sitting on a bench. Her hair was long, it hung down and spread over the floor. A young girl was sitting at a table. She was quite fair, fairer than the sun. This was the Wolf-girl. The wolflings outside were her brothers. The old woman looked up and said, "I never saw such a face in our own place. No human beings ever came here. Who are you, – a human creature, or something else?" – "I am human." – "And what are you looking for, roaming about?" – "I am in great need. I am looking for a shaman, having been sent by a suffering person." She repeated her question, and he answered the same as before. The old woman held her breath for some time. Then she said, "I am too old now. I do not know whether I still possess any power, but in former times I used to help people." He took hold of her, put her upon his horse, and rode back to the old man's home. He took her into the house, and said, "This is the shaman I have brought for you." They treated her to the best dainties, and all the while she was drying over the fire her small, strange shaman's drum. After that she started her shamanistic performance. According to custom, she made the man who had taken her there hold the long tassel fastened to the back of her garments. "Take care!" said the old woman, "do not let go of this tassel!" He grasped the tassel, and the old woman wound herself around like a piece of birchbark over the fire. The house was full of people, housemates, guests, onlookers. After a while the young man said, "I feel very hot. Let somebody hold this tassel for a little while, and I will go out and cool myself." He went out of the house. The moon was shining brightly. A number of horses were digging the snow for some tussock-grass. He caught them all. Then he cut down some young willow and prepared a number of willow brooms – one for each of the horses. He tied the brooms to the tails of the horses. Then he set them afire, and set the horses free. Seeing the glare and scenting the smell of fire, they ran away in every direction. He went back and took hold of the tassel again, as though nothing had happened. Then some other person went out, and hurried back, shouting, "O men! the country all around is aflame!" And, indeed, the horses were galloping about, waving high their tails of fire. "Who lighted this fire?" said the people. "Perhaps the spirits." Everyone left the house. They stood outside, staring upon that living fire fleeting by. "Ah, ah!" said some of them. "It is our end. This fire will burn us down." Not one of them thought any more of the old woman. The young man, however, quietly slipped back into the house. The old woman was drumming more violently than ever. She was so full of inspiration, that she had noticed nothing at all. He looked about. No one was there. The old woman drummed on. Then he lifted from the ground a big kettle full to the brim of ice-cold water and all at once he overturned it over the old woman's head. After that he put the kettle over her head and shoulders. The old woman shuddered, and fell down dead, as is the way of all shamans when frightened unexpectedly. The young man left the house, and mingled among the people outside, looking most innocent. After some time, however, he said, "Why are we standing here looking at this blaze, and meantime we have left the shaman alone in the house? That is wrong." They hurried back, and the wolf shaman was lying on the ground, wet and stone dead, half hidden in the kettle. The old man was in great fear, and wailed aloud, "Alas, alas! I lost a son, and that was bad enough; but it is much worse that this Wolf-woman has died in our house. Her children will surely come and wreak vengeance upon our heads. We are already as good as dead. O God!" he continued, "we are in a bad plight. Somebody must go and carry the Wolf-woman to her own house." The people were full of fear and nobody wanted to go. Then the old man tried to induce the young visitor to convey the body of the Wolf-woman to her family. The young man said, "How can I do this? They will tear me into bits." The old man had a young daughter who was very pretty. He said, "Please toss this old woman away! If you come back alive, you may marry this young girl as your reward." – "All right," said the young man, "but still I am not sure. Perhaps, even if I come back alive, you will break your word and give me nothing." – "No, never!" said the old man, "I will deal honestly with you." – "So be it," said the young man. "Now please kill for me two ptarmigan, and give me their bladders filled with fresh and warm blood." He took the bladders and placed them under his armpits. Then he drove some iron nails into his heels, into the very flesh. He took the old woman and put her upon the saddle. Then he bound her fast, though not very strongly. She looked, however, quite like a living person riding a horse. They set off and reached the house of the wolves. "Oh," the wolflings raised a yell, "Mamma is coming, mamma is coming! "Easy," said the young man. "My horse shies easily. Take care lest you cause some great misfortune." And he secretly spurred his horse with the nails of his feet. The horse reared and threw him down. The other horse did the same. The body of the wolf-mother fell down like a bundle of rags. The bladder burst, and all the blood was spilled. They lay there side by side, swimming in blood. The wolf-children said, "O brother! our mother is dead; but that is as nothing. We have killed that stranger by our imprudence. He is near unto death, and no doubt his brothers and sisters, and all his kith and kin, will come here to have revenge." They went near and looked at him. The blood was streaming down his arms and legs. "Oh, oh!" said the wolf-children, "How can be live?" In despair they took him by the hands and feet and shook him and said to him, "Please, man, do not die here! We will give you our pretty sister." They worried him, howled over him, and entreated him, and by and by he acted as though feeling a little better. He sighed low, "Oh, oh!" In the end he fully revived and came to. "Ah!" said the wolflings to their sister, "see what good luck we have. A man was dying, and we said, 'We will give you our sister,' and he revived." So he took the girl and went home. "Be sure," said the wolf children on taking farewell, "when you return to your own place, not to tell your kinsmen that we had nearly killed you!" – "I will not tell," assured the man, and galloped off with his bride. They came to the old man. "I have come back and am alive!" shouted the young man. "Where is the girl?" – "Here she is," said the old man. "Thank the Spirits, you have come back safe!" He took the other girl, and went back to his brother with two women and three horses. The brother said, "How long it is since you were here! I thought you were dead but I see you have brought some girls." – "I have," said the young man. He entered the house, and without much ado, cutoff the head of his sister-in-law. "There you are!" said he. "You shall have no more paramours." He gave his brother the old man's daughter and took for himself the old woman's daughter. After that they lived on. submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.06.10 22:27 Alarmed-Branch-4876 About 3 weeks sober, still experiencing major depression and boredom
It may sound dumb to be asking so soon after quitting, but I really just have a seemingly unique experience that I can’t really find any advice for. I’m 20 years old, just quit vaping THC/smoking after using it very frequently (several times daily) for about 5 months prior. Ever since quitting, I’ve had the typical symptoms, headaches, restlessness, frequent crying spells, boredom, loss of appetite, feeling of hopelessness, etc… with time my appetite has gotten better, I don’t get headaches anymore, but I’m still struggling quite a bit with the post-quit depression. Now granted I was diagnosed with mild depression in the past anyway, it’s gotten significantly worse, I’ve totally lost interest in doing what I enjoy… playing video games, watching videos, playing basketball, building trading card decks (I play Magic: The Gathering as a hobby,) I wake up every morning and I feel empty, bored, lacking any sort of joy outside of the quick dopamine fixes, (smoking, masturbating) with no desire to do literally anything that I can think of. Everybody’s advice is to find new things to do, find hobbies, “do what I love”, but I genuinely don’t know how to do that, because EVERYTHING I can imagine sounds equally boring and unappetizing to me right now. I am a very anxiety-ridden guy and I’m just trying to make it out of this alive and happy. If anybody has any advice or personal experiences, I would appreciate hearing it. My parents don’t know how to help me and it breaks my heart seeing them try to cheer me up to no avail. I don’t know how to help myself either. Is this normal? Should I still be this sad, bored, and lifeless multiple weeks after quitting? I feel alone and hopeless.

2023.06.10 22:25 throwra362773 I (26M) was scared to commit to girl (30F) when I was ready she left
I (26M) dated a girl (30F let’s call her Jane) for about 9 months (sept 22). A few times early on she asked me what I was looking for and I’d always say I’m not really looking for anything. As time goes on we hang out a lot (3-5x a week) and we’re super comfortable and close. I never felt pressured or thought about establishing a relationship. I could sense jane like me a lot more than I liked her, she’d text me she misses me, try to plan dates, etc. I stopped seeing other people early March because I realized every time I was with someone I’d just think of Jane. I never told her that, because I was just going with the flow.
Around mid-late April Jane leaves her phone open in front of me with texts from a guy from tinder on it. I don’t say anything since we never talked exclusivity but it ate me alive the entire night and she asked me what is going on. I told her it hurt because I wasn’t seeing anyone and I just assumed after such a long time we were kind of on the same page and that she’s right we’re not exclusive so I can’t really say much about it.
We took a few days break, both felt really shitty and missed each other. She wanted me to be fully committed to her and monogamous, where I wanted to continue to date and be exclusive so I can allow my feelings to open up, I told her I can’t promise anything but that I want to see where it goes. She reluctantly agreed to be exclusive.. after about a week she told me she was unhappy because she compromised her values for me. We took another few day break because I didn’t want to continue seeing her if she was seeing other people.
We got back a few days later after we both really misssed each other again where we were dating freely again. (May 10ish)
Things were going well and I was allowing myself to open up and be more vulnerable and caring for her.
About 10 days later she leaves for a work trip for 5 days and is very distant with me the entire week and didn’t really want to see me when she’s back.
I was leaving Saturday before Memorial Day to visit home and told her I needed to see her before I left.
We had a discussion and she was overthinking our relationship and felt bad I was putting in more effort into seeing her in her neighborhood since she was so busy, rather than her equally visiting me. She was losing feelings and not sure if they were going to come back. She’s still seeing other people. We are both workaholics so we agreeed to put time aside from each other, I was looking to rent an apartment that would be an easier commute since I was apartment hunting anyway, we both wanted to make it work. She admitted she didn’t know if she even wanted a serious relationship with anyone right now, that she has a fear of committing and has self sabotaging behavior. She also admitted she missed having a honeymoon phase with heavy infatuation with me and it felt like we skipped it because we got so comfortable so quickly.
She felt super good after our talk we have super passionate make up sex, agreed to meet Monday on Memorial Day to explore the city and make date night plans for Friday night. Rest of the day and next day Jane texts me a lot and says she misses me and wish she could be with me in my hometown. We agreed on a time to hangout the next day.
Next day comes and Jane calls me that she doesn’t want to continue the relationship and that she lost feelings.
I sent her a long text and she responds she loves all our moments together, loves me as a human, wants me to be happy and loved.
A few days later I ask Jane to meet up and talk she agrees.. we tried to meet up Saturday, it doesn’t work for her any more. We make plans to meet Sunday… she texts me she woke up late, and will see how she feels after her workout class… tells me she needs a mental health day and “appreciates the flexibility”, we agree to meet Monday.
Later in the day I cancelled, because I felt like I didn’t really matter and was a chore, I told her I loved her (I never told her before), apologized for my fear of committing when she wanted me to, I wished things were different and her true colors are starting to show, I’m always open to talking but I won’t always be there like I am now. She responded “ok best of luck”
I went NC until I was drunk and texted her “I missed her in my life” She never responded and I can’t let go.
Any thoughts or advice?

2023.06.10 22:25 MoralityOrCarrot Help with intrusive neighbour
I live with my wife in a block of around 15 flats in Kreuzberg and have been living here around 5 years. Around about 2 months ago when I was home by myself, one of my neighbours (65 y/o German woman) who I hadn't spoken to before rang on our bell and asked if she could come in for a coffee. I was a bit thrown-off as none of our neighbours had talked much to us before that, but invited her in and had a coffee with her, no more than 30 minutes total. It was a bit of an awkward chat due to language difficulties, but I didn't think anything more of it and didn't expect her to be back due to the awkwardness of the encounter.
Dear readers - This. Was. A. Mistake. Since this time, she rings at our door dozens of times a week, and when I say rings, I mean that she will stand at our door with the bell pressed down for several minutes at a time and starts banging on the door. She does this throughout the week, but most commonly on the weekend, especially early in the morning. Over the last weeks, she has stood there, ringing our doorbell as early as 5.30am on a Sunday, regularly waking us up. If we answer the door she asks to come in for a coffee, or use our toilet or any other excuse to come into the flat. I have to physically block her from forcing her way into the flat and tell her no. She continues doing this, even after I have asked her to stop ringing the bell and to leave us alone.
Here's the kicker - it's not just us she's doing it to. The bells in our block of flats are extremely loud and we can hear her doing the exact same thing to the rest of our neighbours in the block. She walks door to door for hours, holding down the bells of each door in the flats one by one, including some flats which have small babies and toddlers. Today we were listening to several neighbours shouting at her, before she moves onto the next door and repeats. Everyone is extremely stressed and annoyed and I'm sure some of the vulnerable people in our block are feeling intimidated. The sound of the bells in our flat is even beginning to give me anxiety.
Here's my question - what can I do about this? I wrote to our landlord agency who looks after the whole block of flats and they advised us to call the police. However, it seems to me that she's going through some kind of mental breakdown, and she sounds desperate and confused when I talk to her. While we're quite desperate for this to stop, I was wondering if there was some kind of social agency we could contact for a welfare check, rather than having to get the police involved? I'm worried that the mental breakdown might get worse and she could hurt herself or someone else, or that someone in the flat might attack her (it's still Kreuzberg). If we have to contact the police, would would be the best way to do this to make sure she gets the help she needs?
Any advice appreciated!
