2023.05.17 23:11 scarsellaj The Hater's Guide to the 2023 Champions League Final

I want to believe the Champions League is a fair institution that doesn't favor clubs with massive amounts of money. Otherwise, I have no earthly idea why the reffing was so bad in some of these knockout matches. UEFA, I've got questions. And I have a lot of sarcastic things to say about your favorite club. Welcome to football hell.
Dortmund: In what has been a very turbulent season for the Black & Yellow, somehow this is the least surprising outcome. Chelsea might've been shit heading into both legs, but the gap in quality showed. The shopping spree they went on in winter is paving some dividends. Nothing screams financial excellence like England's eleventh-place team taking down Germany's second-biggest club. At first, it seemed like Dortmund would hold on to advance. Karim Adeyemi's solo goal in the first leg showed why they splashed the cash on him. Then came the 2nd leg...yea. The handball on Marius Wolf seemed harsh, but in the VAR era, that's getting called 9 times out of 10. A silly penalty converted by Kai Havertz and some magic from Raheem Sterling was enough to overturn the 1-0 aggregate. I don't know if Dortmund is losing too much sleep over this. They've got bigger aspirations ahead: the Bundesliga title race. Between them, Bayern, and the continued rise of Union Berlin, Germany may FINALLY have a new champion. Emphasis on the 'maybe,' you never known with Bayern. Don't fuck this up, Dortmund. You're running out of chances to shift the balance of power. Except when Bayern come shopping for Adeyemi and Jude Bellingham in their fits of rage.
Tottenham: Oh look, it's another trophyless season for Spurs. In other news, grass is green. The Conte era has totally collapsed. Everything went wrong for Tottenham against AC Milan. Not having Hugo Lloris is tough, but the defense wasn't doing Fraser Forster any favors in relief. The first leg saw them concede in just 7 minutes like the bottle jobs they are. Between the 1st and 2nd legs, Spurs managed to beat City, Chelsea, and West Ham, only to lose to Sheffield United, Wolves, and Milan again. The 2nd leg didn't even look like Conte was trying. He played so negative that fans were calling for Mauricio Pochettino to return. The vibes at N17 are horrendous. Daniel Levy has a lot of questions to answer. He's now hired three managers who haven't made Tottenham better or taken them any closer to silverware. Richarlison's struggles continue and he was pissed for not getting any play time (to be fair, he's been injured most of the season). HM Son looks like a shell of himself. Cristian Romero gets so many yellow cards he's basically the Argentine Sergio Ramos. Another failed season for Spurs. Another summer of manager hunting. Down bad for real...just like me lately. And now Conte is gone for calling out Levy and ENIC. The truth hurts, doesn't it?
Club Brugge: In the first Hater's Guide for this season's UCL run, I said Brugge was doing something nifty with Carl Hoefkens at the helm. As you can probably imagine, I don't watch the Belgian Pro League at all. I didn't know he got fired and replaced by Scott Parker. Which also didn't work out, since he was sacked right after the loss to Benfica. It's one thing to lose 2-0 in the first leg, but getting pumped 5-1 for 7-1 on agg? What the fuck guys? How did you go from storming the group stage to laying down and dying? It probably hasn't helped that videos leaked of Noa Lang tearing his teammates a new one after an incredibly frustrating campaign. Tough luck, Brugge. I'd say keep your head up but I just checked the Belgian league standings.
PSG: So that Mbappe contract and bringing in Messi has led to another early UCL exit. What's the excuse this time, PSG? Matching up against Bayern was definitely the worst possible situation, but for fuck's sake, no goals scored??? How do you do that with the best young striker in the world and the GOAT of world football, plus players like Hakimi, Donnarumma, Verratti, and Sergio Ramos? No Neymar sucks but you should still have enough talent to make it tough for the Bavarians. Even if you do win the French title, it will mean nothing. It just means the project has failed. Messi is likely to move on, Mbappe might get his wish and get out, the patience with Neymar has worn thin, Hakimi is facing legal issues, and there's not enough talent in the current squad to be a legit UCL contender next season. All the football purists are relishing this. Oil money will never buy the Champions League. It can make a flashy team, but there's no substance, no passion.
RB Leipzig: In the past few seasons, Leipzig has been the bogey team for Manchester City. They’ve given Pep and the boys a lot of grief. But not this time. This time, City had the robot that is Erling Haaland. 6-0 in the second leg for a 7-1 aggregate death for the Red Bulls. Enjoy that body slam Ederson had on Timo Werner? Still wild Werner got the yellow card in the end. This is a weird Leipzig team. Marco Rose has been doing a good job but I struggle to figure out what they want to be. Bringing back Timo Werner was a good move but at the cost of selling Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea. I thought they would still be the next real challengers for the Bayern Bundesliga title monopoly but they’ve fallen back in Germany. Sitting in 4th, they’re hoping to get into the Champions League again. I hope you enjoyed Josko Gvardiol because he’s more than likely bound for a bigger team in the summer. Have no fear, your energy drink club system always has young players ready to make the leap. I hear that Benjamin Sesko kid is pretty good.
Frankfurt: It's one thing to win the Europa League in spectacular fashion, but it's a whole other beast contending for the Champions League. Oliver Glasner could not rise to the occasion. It's tough matching up against Napoli in the form they're in but I expected more from the defending Europa champs. It doesn't help they are falling off the pace in Germany, losing to far inferior teams like Koln and drawing Bochum. At this rate, they won't even be in the Conference League next season. The most unfortunate part is Frankfurt is suffering the fate of a lot of mid-table German clubs: another summer of rostering shuffle. Daichi Kamada hasn't signed a new contract and is set to leave on a free, bigger clubs are eyeing Evan N'Dicka, Randal Kolo Muani's rise is attracting a lot of attention, and even Glasner is linked to the Tottenham job. It's a fate these clubs have to deal with annually. You still think 50+1 is so great? It's the reason these clubs never topple the Bayern monopoly or compete in the Champions League long enough.
Liverpool: Liverpool suck. That's it...that's the bit...Nah I'm just fucking with you, let's barbecue these Scouse fucks. You got absolutely manhandled by your mortal enemy in Real Madrid. The first leg was a comedy of errors for both teams, but it was just a touch funnier on the red side. The second was just football heritage on display. The football gods are making Liverpool pay penance for such meteoric seasons. What did it cost? Just their WHOLE midfield. And most of Trent's defending skills. Seriously, why can't he defend anything on the counter? Even worse, what happened to Van Djik and Konate? They were rock solid last season, but they're basically gravel now. Injuries always ruin the plan, but Klopp isn't navigating it well. Take solace in knowing Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez are finally finding themselves. Mo Salah is turning it around too and Luis Diaz is back from a long injury spell. Unfortunately, you have to say goodbye to Bobby Firmino. His watch in Merseyside has ended. Sad but get fucked.
Porto: This has to be Porto’s worst showing in the Champions League in a long time. Against this floundering Inter team, they should’ve been blitzing their opponents in front of goal. I guess the Italian tactic of sitting back and whipping in crosses on the counter worked considering Lukaku somehow netted the only goal of the 2 legs. What’s more shocking is Porto took a red card in both legs. Self-sabotaging yourself I see. That’s never going to pip you to the title over Benfica. You’re letting you eternal rivals run rampant in Europe. Sad scenes for Porto. It’s only going to get worse when Diogo Costa is sold.
Bayern: Sacking Julian Nagelsmann was a strange choice. The squad was floundering, you'll say. He played underwhelming football, the haters cry out. Right, it was his underwhelming football that positioned Bayern to be one of the strongest teams in the Champions League. The board sent him packing because he was one point off Dortmund for first in the Bundesliga. Thomas Tuchel was always destined to manage Bayern, but nobody expected him to take the role this late in the season. It clearly didn't matter to Man City. Erling Haaland showed them what could've been theirs across both legs. Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish ran circles around the Bavarians. 4-1 on agg, nothing to show for it. This Bayern team is broken. Mane and Sane getting into fist fights in the dressing rooms and now they're already itching to sell Sadio ASAP. We never think toxicity exists in Bayern but here we are. I want to love German football, but they make it so hard with these types of strange maneuvers. Take pride in knowing the De Ligt transfer is paying off, to a degree.
Napoli: You can call this a taste of poetic justice. This is what Napoli fans get for being huge pieces of shit toward Rafael Leao. Clearly it didn't faze him at all with the masterclass he dropped against the Neapolitans. There were serious questions about Napoli going into this tie, all of them surrounding key players. Losing Osmihen for the first leg set was tough, but starting Elmas as a false 9 with Raspodori on the bench was a bad decision by Spalletti. The second leg was no different, even with Osmihen back in the team. Khrava (I'm not even gonna try to spell his full name) showed he wasn't ready for the biggest stage. Nobody could score, even against this watered-down Milan defense. The penalty saved ruined the chance for the double. Thus Napoli bows out of the biggest competition in Europe. It comes at the expense of being absolutely victimized by AC Milan three times in two weeks... Sleep tight knowing the Italian title is under your belt. But seriously, someone teach your fans to not be so classless.
Chelsea: Graham Potter was set up to fail. That was one of the worst Chelsea performances in the history of the club's European performances, and trust me, there are some real BAD ones. The Abramovich Rule lives on. Todd Boehly fired the plucky English manager into the Thames and replaced him with...Frank Lampard?? Chelsea is not a serious club. Bringing all those players in winter hasn't fixed anything. If anything, it's made things worse. Even with Madrid relying on aging vets and the continued rise of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, and Fede Valverde, the Madridistas have the X-factor: team chemistry. That's what lacks when you bring in over 25 new players and not all of them can play together. Still, bringing back Lampard as caretaker manager was an even worse decision. Mudryk and Fernandez at least look like they'll be key pieces of the future, but the rest of this squad looks terrible. Kai Havertz is STILL not a real striker. Joao Felix's loan has shown flashes of potential that made him a £100 million player. Mason Mount is done for in London, yet is still being courted by Liverpool. The rest of the team? Mid. More mid than Little Caesar's pizza sober. It's going to be a very interesting summer for Chelsea. They're likely going to be out of Europe next year and have to make significant sales to balance the books. So it begs the questions: will Christian Pulisic finally be free from this prison he trapped himself into?
Benfica: A lot of promise turned into failure. I feel like this is a very normal thing for Benfica. They've turned into the next Ajax: clubs snatching up their young talent while aging vets fill the ranks. Roger Schmidt is making a name for himself as a top managerial candidate, but sometimes the team ahead of you is just better. You'd think even with Joao Mario having a redemption season, Grimaldo finally playing up to his potential, the continued rise of Antonio Silva and Gonçalo Ramos, this team would get past a struggling Inter side. Except they didn't. And I can't even point to a reason as to why. The damage was done in the first leg with only two goals. 3-3 in the 2nd leg proved to be too big a deficit to overcome. Shame indeed. At least you're looking like a heavy favorite for the Portuguese title. I know it means less to you but at least it means something. Just enjoy this while you can, since the likes of Ramos and Silva are likely getting bought up by bigger teams.
AC Milan: We all thought this was going to play out like an Italian opera. It played out more like Milanese tragedy. The first Milan derby in the UCL since 2005. Granted, neither of these teams have the shine they did in the past. In truth, this was a football heritage night, but it wouldn't be AC Milan's to reap. They were outclassed by an aging Edin Dzeko and the return of Lautaro Martinez's 2021 form. Romelu Lukaku must've rediscovered the love because he's been flying lately, too. Rafael Leao's absence in the first leg did not help things for the red side of the city. Thus, you get humbled by your cross-town cousins and drift back into the oblivion. So much wasted potential after the 2022 Scudetto win. If you're not playing on Tuesday and Wednesday next season, that will sting. Stefano Pioli is known to be a one-season wonder. Will he back as gaffer next season?
Real Madrid: This is not something I expected to have to write but here we are. We always talk about football heritage online. That it's the reason the state-backed clubs won't ever win the Champions League. That Real Madrid is the example of history over money. Man City said fuck the narratives and completely dominated them from the first leg. Sure, Vinicius Jr scored but they clearly thought vibes would get them over the line. When in reality, we saw the first time in a while when Ancelotti was outcoached. Even his eyebrows couldn't save Madrid's fortunes this time. So there will be no 15th trophy...this season. Rumor has it the gang is sticking around for another season, at the minimum. It might have to one more season. Oh well.
So we now reach the final level of this wild FIFA-esque season. Who are our final candidates?
Inter Milan: You're not supposed to be here. No seriously, you really aren't supposed to be here. And yet...maybe we should've known Inter was not going away. Simone Inzaghi is known for being a cup specialist in Italy. He's translating it to continental play. Inter may be struggling in Italy this season but they have thrived in the Champions League. Lautaro Martinez picked up from where he left at the World Cup and starting scoring again. Edin Dzeko turned the clock back a few years. Niccolo Barella has been balling lately. Even Lukaku has started to come good for them. You may be losing Skriniar to PSG in the off-season, but that's a loss you're willing to take. Especially if it brings back Europe's greatest prize. Inter's first CL final since 2010 puts them against...
Manchester City: Well, this is mismatch of the highest degree. I know every football purist is dying on the inside. The Cityzens are back in the final, and this time they are hungry. Adding Erling Haaland and his trusty deputy Julian Alvarez made City way more clinical up front. Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish have stepped their game by a huge margin. Roman Akanji was a solid purchase and he's become undroppable. Who know sacrificing Joao Cancelo to Bayern would be such a difference-maker? It also helps having a robot that's a striker. Pep's plan is bring it back to Manchester, and legitimize the blue side of the city. If he does it, everyone will be furious...especially Manchester United fans. And Real Madrid. And PSG fans because it could've been them. One oil money club is enough, thank you very much.
So who do I think will win? Well I picked City last time they made the final and boy did I look stupid for that. This time...safer bet, but nah, I'm going Inter. Italian football needs its moment in the sun again. Get it done, Inzaghi.

Inherited moms silver
Hey all. I stack my own stuff (AGEs, John wicks, random other stuff) but I’ve inherited my moms (grandmas before hers) silver. I’m super overwhelmed with everything and any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated. It’s an assortment of brands but most of it is Old Master and WM rogers. Random pieces of Crown Silver and White Orchid too.
I really don’t want to keep it. Would be more than happy to sell or trade for silvegold that I have more knowledge of.
