Let's have a look at the latest AI advancements and what they could mean for humanity and work.
Summary
GPT-4 was able to use external tools (ChatGPT plugins have already arrived), understand the beliefs, intentions, and emotions of users, and even solved a marital argument.

The next logical step obviously seems to put GPT in a body.
Sanctuary.ai is another startup that has taken a different approach to this. While others are focused on developing special-purpose robots to address specific, narrowly defined, singular tasks, they are developing an autonomous control system in software that mimics subsystems found in the human brain, such as memory, sight, sound, and touch.
When this software is applied to a general-purpose system (as opposed to a single-purpose system), opportunities will exist to take on just about any human task.
Here are the videos of their bots in action performing all kinds of tasks like flipping burgers, stocking boxes, labeling stuff, etc. One video shows the robot taking the blood pressure readings of a patient.
A lot of these things like taking the BP of a patient might seem mundane but imagine remote places where quality healthcare is not available just because there are no doctors around. Or, warzones where it is risky to endanger the lives of civilian doctors.
A couple of years or perhaps months down the line when these robots get better and start being mass-produced, it could be possible to save lives and perform intermediary procedures before emergency help arrives from a distance.
They are not alone. A startup called https://www.figure.ai/ is also working on the same but in a much more humanoid form.
The important thing to note here is that while a humanoid AI certainly has its advantages like aesthetics, it is not necessary for such robots to look like humans to be functional.

It looks a little creepy and you might be wondering how this would be useful in any real-world scenario. But imagine places that are hard for humans to reach like caves and crevices. Scenarios where a full-fledged body would be a hurdle. These could be pretty useful to perform infrastructure inspections when fitted with sensors or to gather wildlife data. Military applications are also possible.

I am excited about a potential future where humans don’t have to do tiring and dangerous tasks. But I am also worried whether these rapid changes will increase economic disparity and disrupt any already tenuous labor market.
Massive layoffs and economic shifts while people struggle to learn new skills are very likely. Durkheim, a sociologist, who studied the rate of suicides in the industrial age of Europe noted that periods of such upheavals generally lead to an uptick in suicides.
When anything is possible, everything overwhelms you.
Does a more rigorous hustle culture await?

Recently released U.S copyright policy states that AI images cannot be copyrighted unless human effort is put in to modify and prompt engineering is not the same as putting human efforts to create art.
Yet, Midjourney images look stunning and some of them move me in the same way any human art would.
Google's MusicLM produces believable music, hums, and melodies. It even shows the early promise of songs with vocals and turns paintings into music that fits its themes. (Which I think is pretty great - imagine a blind person listening to Monalisa)

But, where do we draw the line of authenticity?
Last few months, several hundred startups just went poof because tech is getting outdated that fast.
You think of an idea. You build a product. And a couple of weeks later an AI does it better and that AI probably comes from the big names.
In a market, it makes sense that the fittest and best product survives but at what cost? Does it not make more sense to open-source such important technology? OpenAI is anything but Open nowadays.
As these companies race to push new AI products out every other day, who is talking about AI ethics and data diversity?
Are cultures who are already marginalized represented in the training data of these AIs who we expect to work for us, treat us, and empower us?

Khan academy + GPT-4 just revolutionized education. Duolingo makes language learning easier. Soon you might not even need to learn a new language - universal translators could be a reality. (We have accurate AI transcription, translation, and voice cloning here already).
Midjourney, metahuman tech, and everything in between will empower small-time creators to tell their stories at the level of big studios. In that sense, AI is a disruptor as well as an equalizer.
It is already helping me pursue my dreams of writing, creating videos (as a non-native speaker I was always worried about my spoken English; AI helped me here), and a lot more.

1. Sparks of AGI
I suspect that almost everybody in this sub already knows about this Microsoft paper. In case, you don't, Microsoft released a paper describing their experiments with early GPT-4 and claiming that they saw "sparks of AGI" - AIs that can do everything humans can do.GPT-4 was able to use external tools (ChatGPT plugins have already arrived), understand the beliefs, intentions, and emotions of users, and even solved a marital argument.

2. AIs In Humanoid Bodies
Open AI just invested 23 million in a startup named 1x building humanoid robots. The startup has already demonstrated robots capable of doing stuff like closing zippers, tying zip ties, etc (tasks require fine finger movement).Sanctuary.ai is another startup that has taken a different approach to this. What does this mean for jobs?

A Concern: Big Tech Monopoly And Data Bias
I am seeing a worrying trend in the way existing big techs are entrenching themselves in the AI revolution. Open AI leads the AI tech but is funded by Microsoft. Google just bought Anthropic. Meta open-sourced Llama and that's the exception.Last few months, several hundred startups just went poof because tech is getting outdated that fast.

5. AI Making The World A More Beautiful Place
Aside from the doomer talk, AI is obviously doing a lot of good. See how it is empowering visually impaired humans with Be My Eyes or helping people with voice difficulties speak with AI voice.Khan academy + GPT-4 just revolutionized education. Duolingo makes language learning easier. Soon you might not even need to learn a new language - universal translators could be a reality.  | A few tips for people wanting to defeat the boss, from a casual player who tries to beat the game only on DMD with S rank on every mission. (slight spoilers) submitted by pokfen to DevilMayCry [link] [comments] Continuing the search for playable Dante, Nero in this reality instead of not being deadweight, tries to prove his missing devil hunter senpai that he is NOT A DEADWEIGHT (reference). Chair guy falling Ok, but shitpost aside, I wanted to share some insights into how to deal with such stupid challenge. M7 without breakers btw. Thank you random player \"s-something\" whose name I forgot for help. First of all, I still continue my DMD only S playthrough. Additional impediment I made myself stems from the idea, that story-wise Nero after getting his Devil Bringer yoinked, lost access to his demonic powers (being obviously DT and Charged Shot) (mostly bcs of mental block). However Air Hike's description states that the character uses their demonic powers to create for themselves a platform to jump of. Hence I decided not to buy it (till I finish the game that is) No Air Hike I wanted also to thank YT user "Last to Load" for their video of doing this challenge (with Air Hike) - the only one without NG+ I could find tbh. They showed some of strategies I've learned to how fight the guy from a chair (yes I replaced his throne with monobloc and renamed his title to "Chair guy"). Devil Breakers set-up: 2 Gerberas, Buster Arm, 2 Gerberas, Buster Arm, 2 Gerberas. Reasoning: Even though the guide I've seen (and probably many other players speedrunning this fight no-damage) used Helter Skelter, bcs of it's extra damage against shields making it the fastest way to get to Urizen himself, I had to change my strategy. Because of not being able to double jump all I would have available for air mobility is Air Taunt (which worked really well in prologue). However on one attempt just after starting to fight the 3rd crystal (2nd in optional fight) Urizen quickly went DT, while hp bar didn't really move beyond quarter of his health. Unfortunately I'm not master of Exceed and back_to_forward movements to perform Calibur, so I couldn't get high enough dps for Urizen cycle. The reason of this surprise was of course the fact that on DMD enemy will be more eager to go DT if you taunt them a lot. Even the former mentioned guide-video shows that Urizen goes DT on about half hp. Not only that, I couldn't find good openings for Helter Skelter to bring down the crystal, since Urizen would often send out homing vine or acid rain (referencing Artemis' DMC3 move). Those were Myrizens (shabby pun) to completely abandon idea of using Helter Skelter for Gerbera. By using 21212 set-up I could allow myself to sacrifice one Gerbera with Break-Away to avoid damage (or for Scapegoat). By the time Urizen is stunned, I usually were on 2nd Gerbera. After that it was quick break-away into Super Buster to speed up the fight. Health managment: By the time I reached last chackpoint, I had about half of current healthbar (kep in mind I don't have all blue orbs). I didn't want to waste my time by restarting the whole mission (can't even train for the Fury fight in void, since I don't want to finish the mission like a deadweight, so I would have to fight it based on guides on YT - arigatogozaimasu (weeb)). I'd rather have full hp for the battle to have an option to scapegoat more than once. Hopefully the last checkpoint leaves a few Empusas(or whatever is plural form). Of course, one is not likely to get a lot of green orbs through battle on DMD. Thankfully one of those enemies is Green Empusa. If you eliminate every other basic Empusa, then get close to the cliff to trigger spawn, try to Wire Snatch it closer and DON'T attack it. Let it fly to blood puddles left on the ground. You may realize, that it's sackgrew bigger. After about 2 of such drinks when I eliminate it, I was granted about 1 whole healthbar. A tedius thing to do, since you cannot update your checkpoint, by visisting Nico's van and changing DB set-up (set-up updates, but hp stays the same at it was when you arrived). However slight hope get away with one potential mistake seems worth it. The first - mandatory phase is something we all dealt with and is honestly a ResidentSleeper moment. Moving on. The real challenge - optional battle. From what I've seen, the very begining seems to be scripted to follow one short pattern:
When you destroy the crystal, Urizen's magic attack (e.g. flame geyser) tend to whiff the moment the crystal is broke (only first few flames come up and the rest doesn't contrary to how it works in the 1st phase). Midcasted attacks like fireball or acid rain tend to fail the moment the attack starts (but be wary, in case I made a mistake). In the phase Urizen is open to damage, he seems to almost never use his magic attacks. However he has a fair share of melee moves, knockback shakwave and HOMING VINE STILL WORKS (EVEN IF CRYSTAL IS BROKEN MIDCAST). For this phase, the very efficient strategy is to get on his eye-level and Aerial Combo B, Ex-Calibur at him. Unlike Crystal, he can be Jump Canceled and Wire bound to (Air Hike wasn't an option for me, but can be useful). If you need to change position a bit to avoid attack hibox, you might use Gerbera or Air Taunt(if you restrained yourself from using it in this phase, he should not DT till is about quarter health left). Use that to keep close to him. All of attacks below CAN appear in his crystal phase, but are listed separetly since he uses them more often here.
If one plays really good with Nero, you migh get the stun on 1st or 2nd cycle, but I usually got there by 3rd. It usually left Urizen with about 1/5 health left. Then he Devil Triggered and restored crystal. When that happens, MOVE AWAY FROM HIM! Urizen will create the big slow sphere around him, similar to one of 1st phase moves. After which Sweeping laser comes. I personally have never been able to time Break Away properly to avoid hitbox of that laser (I mostly were airbourne and couldn't tell if I am at the hitbox's height). From about 3 or 4 times I get there, after the laser, Urizen is weirdly calm. Just struts towards you menacingly after this, I honestly prefered to stay far away and chip away with Blue Rose. Risking melee attacks or vine up close wasn't my thing. Good news is, that after DT, there is nothing that stops you from using Air Taunt for extra mobility. I can't remember if it happend to me, but people say that during DT Urizen might cast 2 regular Fireballs at once. So it is another reason to stay away, since one use of Gerbera might not be able to deflect the second strike. Those were my thoughts and tips for people interested in challenging the game. It was a hard experience, but satisfaction was worth it. From what I've seen, beating this mission with fake ending still unlocks next mission, so there isn't much downside. You should unlock cutscene anyway. Now Nero's gameplay should be easier, since there is no boss you are meant to lose to. I tried this mission later with Vergil... Indeed he is more motivated than any other boss. It lasted less than 2 minutes. Deep Stinger wrecks the crystal fast and deals damage to Urizen himself. Later just Hell on Earth, possibly Deep Stinger again if I mess up the timing and Crystal comes back, etc. One SDT bar took about 1/2 of hp. All that was left was to Accumulate DT I gathered and a few JC to finish the job. But in case anyone tries to do it with "respect" to enemy, then all I can say is that Homing Vine can be avoided with Trick Up and another Trick up when vine turns around trying to strike you from above. Fireball "can" be deflected with Yamato, but it's hard when it's curved. |

Not speaking to the existence of god or what their actual intentions are for humanity, nature, or the greater part of the universe. I’m only speaking to people who expect as an end-game outcome for everyone.
Those who use this as an argument against people who don’t seek parenthood; believe in abortions and individual rights of women, specifically ; LGBTQ+ rights; or those who keep delaying the “so-called” inevitable.
This argument has never been nor ever proven to be true by any actual study, research, or “thoughtful observations or analysis.”
There’s a list of things that quickly disprove this expectation in the way it is used against people to shame them for either “not having children,” “getting married to have children,” or “preparing for a future with hypothetical children.”
**1. Human genitalia and sexual reproductive organs does not automatically give all humans the ability to reproduce**
Everyone cannot reproduce natural. I mean in the since without technology or advanced medicine to do so. People will often mention those who are intersex as an example of this phenomenon. Though, this is often correct, it’s a bit more complicated and nuanced than people go. Our sexual reproductive organs and genitalia should be thought of as a spectrum of many variables that aren’t necessarily developed to create children.
Beyond intersex, many people struggle or do not have the ability to conceive or create offspring. A condition, such as venous leak is often a lifelong condition where boys or men do not the ability to maintain an erection, even with assistive devices or medicine. It is a terminal condition in many cases. It’s an example of a host of sexual reproductive disorders or phenomenons that make it near unlikely or … impossible to have children. For certain conditions, coitus is not possible with typical male-female penetration.
These people are not born with the capacity to have children on their own as it seems.
Any form of infertility or a condition that makes a child unlikely alone says that it is not something that everyone was intended to have or be able to have the “natural way only.”
Another overlooked aspect of this argument is the formation of our reproductive organs and genitalia. Our organs need a specific organization and a specific type of activity to happen, so people can reproduce. In reality, I could wager many or most people could create offspring, but should that be the expectation for everyone. I’d wager no and also think it’s silly to believe that’s what a deity would intend. I’ll speak about that later.
Our genitalia formations are present with no issues, but locating a suitable partner or pairing strictly for reproduction is a serious barrier or could be a terminal problem. A person is not intersex, nor have any diagnosed sexual reproductive function issues. Nothing, like vaginal agenesis, where a vagina is missing, closed, or very small.

Those who use this as an argument against people who don’t seek parenthood; believe in abortions and individual rights of women, specifically ; LGBTQ+ rights; or those who keep delaying the “so-called” inevitable.
This argument has never been nor ever proven to be true by any actual study, research, or “thoughtful observations or analysis.”
There’s a list of things that quickly disprove this expectation in the way it is used against people to shame them for either “not having children,” “getting married to have children,” or “preparing for a future with hypothetical children.”
**1. Human genitalia and sexual reproductive organs does not automatically give all humans the ability to reproduce**
Everyone cannot reproduce natural. I mean in the since without technology or advanced medicine to do so. People will often mention those who are intersex as an example of this phenomenon. Though, this is often correct, it’s a bit more complicated and nuanced than people go. Our sexual reproductive organs and genitalia should be thought of as a spectrum of many variables that aren’t necessarily developed to create children.
Beyond intersex, many people struggle or do not have the ability to conceive or create offspring. A condition, such as venous leak is often a lifelong condition where boys or men do not the ability to maintain an erection, even with assistive devices or medicine. It is a terminal condition in many cases. It’s an example of a host of sexual reproductive disorders or phenomenons that make it near unlikely or … impossible to have children. For certain conditions, coitus is not possible with typical male-female penetration.
These people are not born with the capacity to have children on their own as it seems.
Any form of infertility or a condition that makes a child unlikely alone says that it is not something that everyone was intended to have or be able to have the “natural way only.”
Another overlooked aspect of this argument is the formation of our reproductive organs and genitalia. Our organs need a specific organization and a specific type of activity to happen, so people can reproduce. In reality, I could wager many or most people could create offspring, but should that be the expectation for everyone. I’d wager no and also think it’s silly to believe that’s what a deity would intend. I’ll speak about that later.
Our genitalia formations are present with no issues, but locating a suitable partner or pairing strictly for reproduction is a serious barrier or could be a terminal problem. Last year I had a lot of success sowing and germinating P. Digitalis in a long space on the side of my house. Thousands of seedlings sprouted and survived in an area that's maybe 30x5. I believe they're in a natural "hunk o seedlings" state where there's some that are much bigger than others, that are going to eventually "win" and become the plants that actually last, while the tiny ones get smaller and peter out.
Seeing this up ahead this year, I decided to take several chunks out with a garden knife, and separate them into individual plants to spread in other parts of my yard, as well as a neighbor's yard who was happy to accept them. I think I wound up planting about 50-75 medium- to small-sized seedlings in various places.
Now I'm in suspense about whether or not these will flower this year, and I've decided I don't want to wait 12 weeks to find out, so: How likely are small P. Digitalis plants -- rosettes from 2" to 5" wide with fairly sparse leaves -- to bloom by their normal June/July bloom time? How likely is a dense mat of seedlings to produce flowers, including areas that are dense with varying-sized plants, and others, that because of dryness, thinned out but have only small plants (~2")?
This is the first year where I'll have seed-sown plants blooming, so there'll be a lot of science going on. Any help setting up what "normal" is would be much appreciated.

I've picked up a (translated) version of Wild Seed, I'm close to 200 pages in and I'm not enjoying it.
My summary on the main characters and plot:
Doro is just evil/uninterested in the humans, sees them only as breeding stock, has no relatable morals.
Anyanwu wants to have Doro as a husband, but I do not see why. Also, Doro steps over cultural boundaries of her regularly (consuming animal's milk, having another husband). Also, let's have dolphin sex, which is taboo but totally hot.
There's a lot of talk about breeding, eugenics and so on which I don't find interesting at all.
Maybe I am not getting the point. My current favourite author is Ursula K. LeGuin who managed to portray deep, relatable and complex characters with stories which telling something about the human condition. A lot of this is lacking here.
Did anyone have a similar experience? What did you like about the book?
Should I have started with an earlier book from these series? The book isnt marketed as such, but I saw on wikipedia that it's volume 4 of some cycle.

Speed Jason in several comics casually dodges lasers with the characters shooting them describing him as “Fast and Graceful” In a canon comic he fought on par with an unrestrained Supergirl who was using Wonder-Woman’s Sword. For reference Supergirl is comparable to Superman who is marginally slower than The Flash, who beat someone in a race who was using a teleportation device.
Strength As mentioned before Jason parried full force strikes from Supergirl who compares to Superman, who broke a chunk off the source wall, and who lifted the book of infinite pages with help from an equally strong Shazam.
Techniques/powers Jason trained with Batman for several months and was his second Robin for years, being a master combatant and beating several members of the League of Assassins, a highly elite group of trained warriors while he was acting on pure instinct and had brain damage (red hood the lost days). After he regained his memories through the Lazarus Pit he trained with a magical group called the All Caste and is the only person to survive their cleansing ritual (Red Hood and the outlaws #5) in over 1000 years. From then he learned to summon the All-blades, a set of swords powered by his soul and his blood that allowed him to clash with supergirl.
By the current point in Jason’s story he has speed to match people who can run through time, strike as hard as people who break universes, and is so skilled he can only lose to his older brother Nightwing, someone even Wally West considered fast.

Dear everyone :) First of all, sorry for my english, i am not a native speaker. I bought a 77 C2 OLED one week ago and after owning many TVs before (changing them every 2 years and being VERY picky and unlucky in the panel lotterie, so returned a lot – i know, a bit crazy, but everyone has their obsessions :D ), i can tell you: this is the best (OLED) Panel i have ever seen! ABSOLUTELY no vertical banding, even hardcore „test patterns“ like the famous Marco Polo scene are so clean that you just can’t believe it. NO pink tint. NO coil whine. NO dark patches. Nothing. And like i said, i tested out a lot in the past and have seen many OLEDs at friends. Was completely hyped and happy.
Few days ago i needed so adjust a cable, so i was close to the TV and have spotted without looking for it…a dead pixel! It’s in the left corner and completely invisible from 1,5-2 meters distance. I sit at 3 meters. Even if i try to. It’s impossible. So it has to be the right coulour, a static bright background and you have to be very close and search for it to even spot it. Absolutely zero impact to the normal viewing experience. But i am still thinking about it what a 100% perfect panel it would have been. And never the less i look sometimes to the place where the dead pixel is hidden – just to make sure i can’t see it from my viewing position. You know what i mean?
But i also know: - I got the TV for under 2000 €, an amazing price and all the shops are out of stock. Now there is only the C3 available which costs about the double. 77 C2 are out of stock forever here. So i will be without a TV because the old one is already sold. - Nearly EVERY TV has a minimum of 1 dead pixel. The people who are claiming they have none, never been close to the TV. I have seen A LOT of TVs and have never seen one without a dead pixel. Few days ago i needed so adjust a cable, so i was close to the TV and have spotted without looking for it…a dead pixel! It’s in the left corner and completely invisible from 1,5-2 meters distance. I sit at 3 meters. Even if i try to. It’s impossible. So it has to be the right coulour, a static bright background and you have to be very close and search for it to even spot it. Absolutely zero impact to the normal viewing experience. But i am still thinking about it what a 100% perfect panel it would have been. And never the less i look sometimes to the place where the dead pixel is hidden – just to make sure i can’t see it from my viewing position. You know what i mean?
But i also know: - I got the TV for under 2000 €, an amazing price and all the shops are out of stock. Now there is only the C3 available which costs about the double. 77 C2 are out of stock forever here. So i will be without a TV because the old one is already sold. - Nearly EVERY TV has a minimum of 1 dead pixel. The people who are claiming they have none, never been close to the TV. I have seen A LOT of TVs and have never seen one without a dead pixel. - The city in which the Auction took place. Setting of episode 2.

- Herbalist's garden and then Herbalist himself. Setting for episode 4. So far so good, right?
- Jaune with clocks in the background. In episode 5 we learn that he's old now.
- Ponderstorm's labyrinth, setting for episode 6.
So what do we have next? Ruby seeing Alyx, Alyx turning into Ruby and then falling into Neo's cup of tea while Neo's shown with some sort of group in the background. So what could it all mean?
- Ruby might be following into Alyx's steps much closer than she thinks. She does seem kind of detached from reality (in that she just goes through motions rather than feeling anything) and Alyx was said to treat this world as a game where nothing matters. With theories of the story being written by Lewis and not Alyx, maybe it could mean Ruby is going to at least try to sacrifice herself?
- Ruby will find herself at Neo's mercy. The symbolism of Ruby just falling into Neo's cup implies that Neo is going to be in power big time. I mean, she has the numbers and so far it doesn't even look like Ruby wants to take up her own weapon. What she's going to do with that power highly depends on several factors. One is how and how much she wants to exact revenge on Ruby (is she in "kill on sight" mood or "play with her prey" one) and what is her atttitude toward the Ever After and leaving it or staying in it. Maybe Ruby could try and talk stuff out with Neo, warning her about how the Tree works, maybe Neo could attempt to give the Tree a clone instead of an actual person. Or maybe use Ruby as a sacrifice?
- Alyx-turned-Ruby gives us a rather unnerving smile. Could it mean some sort of trickery? A Ruby clone made by Neo tricking the rest of her team? Or maybe Ruby going insane at some point? Or maybe something related to Ruby not being quite herself mentally, given that her reflection in the labyrinth was actually her mother rather than herself?

But then Ruby looks pretty much the exact same like her mom, and Yang for some reason... has Violet Eyes... while her dad has blue eyes and her mom just has eyes that are red, but when Yang gets angry, her eyes turn Red. So where did the violet come from?

Temples and scholars are at a loss to explain a curse that has affected the entire region, and possibly the entire world. Famed adventurer Syndra Silvane has asked your group of heroes to join her on an expedition to the jungle peninsula of Chult, where she believes the source of the curse is hiding beneath the dense canopy leaves.

(M18). For context, in my younger years, due to previous struggles and health problems, I haven't really hard the opportunity to start hobbies properly, so the hobbies that I am intersted in doing, I am pretty much a beginner in. I hope it's not too late to start. I started gardening in 2020, but due to giving up several times, I've never properly gotten into it. Same for guitar. But the hobbies that I am interested in remain the same, with a few problems for some of them.
Either way I'm going to visit family in the mountains next week, so I should be able to reflect a bit on all this.

- Gardening: I struggle with self esteem and struggling to grow several vegetables, I would always blame myself so have quit and restarted several times. I had a peak in interest in gardening back in February, but this seems to have died down again, because I fear that it won't work out again. I also did gardening partly in reaction to preparing for worsening climate change.
- Guitar: I tend to compare myself too much to others, but what's more problematic is that I struggle to stay committed, especially as I often hit plateaus in my playing.
- Archery: I haven't started this yet, but I have an interest in it, mostly in reaction to a belief that there might be ecological collapse some day.
- Reading: I gave up reading all together last year, because I became too self critical in how I read philosophy, never feeling good enough. I am interested in reading philosophy again, but I don't know how to balance this with reading literature and not to mention reading up about all these hobbies.
- Bushcraft. This one I struggled to stay committed to as I was struggling a lot with campfire lighting and gave up on, but am still interested in restarting someday.
- Climbing. I recently started climbing at my local gym and I absolutely love it. Out of all these hobbies, it's the one that I still manage to not pressure myself with.
Either way I'm going to visit family in the mountains next week, so I should be able to reflect a bit on all this.

Is this show giving me a headache in terms of thinking about the ethics of espionage or the lack of ethics of espionage? It turns out that the ethics of war are easier to analyze than the ethics of espionage. In open warfare, it is ethically permissible to kill anyone who is operating as a combatant, whether he looks, dresses or has the occupation of a combatant or not. If he acts at that moment as a combatant, then it is ethically justified for the enemy to kill that person. But in espionage, Tasneem Qureishi (seasons 4 and 8) and Yevgeny Gromov (seasons 7 and 8) are killing innocent non-combatants, which they need to do, otherwise their cover will be blown. I think a lot of martial law/ethics comes from the writings of Thomas Aquinas and other philosophers. Would anyone who studies martial law/ethics share thoughts on how these thinkers would analyze the ethics of espionage? This program gives me a headache because I can't justify killing innocent noncombatants and spying.

I work for a small company who unfortunately just had to downsize and make extreme cutbacks to survive. It's really difficult because we were growing so fast but as soon as they smelled the upcoming recession they started to make some changes because our orders slowed down a lot. We lost a few really good workers with a lot of skills.
That being said, since the new year my job has changed from just a sander to the guy who trains the sanders, the only on staff sander at the moment so I handle literally every single order coming through my shop, and I'm the one who maintains all of our machines and keeps the shop clean. One of my bosses had me write up SOPs for maintenance the other day and they were blown away with how well I did on them. This guy apparently sings my praises at our other shop as I hear, and he's one of the big bosses.
Last week they sat us all down and told us unfortunately that we have to put a hold on all of our yearly raises but we would still get bonuses like we normally do. I have a meeting today with one of the company owners to talk about this announcement because since the new year hit my job duties have literally tripled and I'm being told there's no raises. This is absolutely unacceptable for my particular position so I'm asking for a fairly large raise. My question is how do I word my request? I've never been part of a company that has this level of professionalism to it so my instinct is "Hey what's it take to get a few more bucks an hour around here?"
