With These 3 Filters You Can Identify Every First Round WR Bust in the Past 15 Years

2023.03.27 16:16 DCProf With These 3 Filters You Can Identify Every First Round WR Bust in the Past 15 Years

I attempted to do a little research project to try to figure out which variables are the most common in first round WR busts. As you would imagine this is complicated and difficult to ascertain and I'm not making any sweeping claims about finding a fool proof way to project which WRs will be busts (that would be silly and foolhardy), but I think its interesting that I have stumbled upon three filters which taken together identify every single first round NFL WR bust in the past 15 years.
Background/Context: From 2006-2020 52 WRs were drafted in the first round of the NFL draft. I labeled 22 as busts (42%) and 30 as hits (58%). Of course whenever you do something like this there are a couple of players who straddle the fence of whether or not they were busts. The two players who had the most success in the NFL whom I labeled busts were DeVante Parker and Cordarelle Patterson. Both players have had long NFL careers but Parker only has 1 season with +800 yards and only one season with +4 TDs (same season) so as a first round NFL draft pick I would call that a bust. C-Pat has had two productive seasons late in his career, but they came as a RB and he also has the NFL record for career kick return TDs so certainly his career itself is not a bust, but I think we can agree that as a "wide receiver" he certainly was a bust so I have put him onto the bust list for the purpose of this study. The minimum threshold I used to determine who was not a bust was any player who had two or more top 35 fantasy WR finishes in their career has not a bust. The player on the non-bust list with the worst NFL career was Hakeem Nicks. I did not label him a bust because in his 2nd-3rd seasons in the NFL he had 1052-11 & 1192-7 - two very good fantasy WR seasons.
Having separated these players into two groups then I then took a look at about a dozen different factors (things like college dominator, college target share, breakout age, RAS scores, 40 times, etc.) to try to determine which factors were most prevalent amongst the busts and fairly rare among the hits. The single variable that correlated the most between bust and non-bust was "best yards in a college season" with the threshold of 1,100 yards being the tipping point. 24/30 of the hits had a season of +1,100 yards in college. Only 12/22 of the busts hit that threshold of +1100 years in a college season.
But I then took this variable one step further. Because clearly reaching the counting stat threshold of 1,100 yards in best college season is not the same in every conference because the Pac 12 & Big 12 have swiss cheese defenses. So then I found this data: https://thecommutesports.com/2019/10/22/college-football-conference-comparison-part-3-defense/
which shows the average per game passing yards allowed per conference between the years 2000-2019. As expected, the Pac 12 (237.52) and Big 12 (233.77) average more passing yards per game than the SEC (207.31), Big 10 (216.31) and ACC (215.52). So if we then take the 1,100 threshold and adjust by these relative proportions relative to the Pac 12: Big 12 (98%), Big 10 (91%), ACC (91%), SEC (87%) the proportional threshold for the SEC drops to 957 receiving yards and the Big 10/ACC drops to 1,001. If we then reapply these conference adjusted thresholds to our sample size of 52 NFL WRs drafted in the first round in the past 15 years now all 30/30 hits meet the threshold. Only 12/22 of the busts reach the threshold.
Of the 12 WRs drafted in the first round who meet the conference adjusted best receiving yards threshold yet still busted 11/12 played in either the Big 12 or the Pac 12. The only one who didn't but still busted as Laquon Treadwell. Treadwell's 40 time was 4.69 which was the slowest of any of the 52 WRs in this sample size.
So taken together collectively, if you apply three filters to the 52 WRs drafted in the first round of the NFL draft from 2006-2020 and ask three questions:
1) Did you fail to have a season in college meeting the minimum threshold of 1100 yards in the Big 12/Pac 12, 1001 in the Big 10/ACC or 957 in the SEC?
2) Did you play in either the Big 12 or the Pac 12?
3) Did you run a +4.65 40 at the NFL combine?
Any player who could answer "no" to all 3 questions had a 100% hit rate (23/23)
Any player who could answer "yes" to 2 of these questions has a 100% bust rate.
Every bust in the past 15 years answers "yes" to at least one of these questions.
Admittedly the Pac 12/Big 12 filter is not that strong as there are still 7 WRs from those conferences who were "hits" in this sample size, but nonetheless I found it interesting that every bust with the exception of Treadwell either: (a) didn't log 1,100 yards in a single college season (actual 1,100 counting stat not even conference adjusted) or (b) if they did it came in either the Big 12/Pac 12.
Guess which WR prospect this season played in the Big 12 AND failed to post a single season yardage total of 1,100? It's QJ of course.
QJ only had 1,069 yards so he failed to meet the 1,110 threshold (and its important to note that he had 3 extra games to reach 1,100 between the Big 12 championship game and the two playoff game) AND he played in the Big 12 and still couldn't hit 1,100 in any of his three seasons in college.
Consider this: the Big 12 is such a poor defensive conference yet if drafted in the first round QJ would have the second lowest best season yardage total of any Big 12 WR drafted in the first round in the past 20 years (Reagor had 8 yards fewer but remember that QJ played more games so QJ has the fewest on a per game basis). The 12 Big 12 WRs in this sample taken together averaged an astounding 1,439.83 yards in their best college yardage season. QJ only comes in at 74% yardage of the average Big 12 WR in this sample size despite playing more games in a single season than any other WR did.
I am NOT trying to proclaim that this is some sort of fool proof formula for predicting which first round WRs drafted in the first round of the NFL draft will bust. Nor am I looking to spend all day arguing with Reddit users that this is a dumb methodology for trying to predict which WRs drafted in the first round of the NFL draft will be busts. I'm simply making note of the "+1100 yards in best college season" variable being the most predictive as well as noting the fact that of the WRs who surpassed this threshold yet still busted all with the exception of slow ass Treadwell played in either the Big 12 or the Pac 12. There are ALWAYS exceptions to the rule, but as of now these variables seem to predict with surprising accuracy which WRs drafted in the first round of the NFL draft might bust. When I decided to pursue this project I certainly did not expect to find variables which sorted the WRs into busts and hits as cleanly as this does.

2023.03.27 16:12 Master_Cobbler_3500 Applying to be a pharmacy technician trainee in Texas.

Hello,
I took a pharmacology course 2 years ago and was not able to pass my PTCE at the time. At the moment, I cannot take the PTCE exam because 60 days since the completion of the course has passed and so I see the only solution as applying as a trainee and working for 500 hours at a local retail pharmacy. I am still pursuing my bachelor's degree and I have some concerns.
  1. Will I be bonded to work full-time with the pharmacy I train in or will I get a chance to change employers after the training ends?
  2. Can I choose to work part-time after the training to study for the PTCE and continue my education?
  3. Does anyone know the rates at which Texas pharmacies pay trainees vs certified pharm techs?

2023.03.27 16:11 faluque_tr 7950X3D short review from actual home user. + PBO and CO guide/referance

Due to major controversial of this CPU regarding how it's "work". This review will focus on my using experience of the CPU. No benchmark, No FPS, No Rendering Time/score.
Tldr; For gamer, this CPU suck and overpriced just simply wait for 7800x3d especially if you have waited for this longFor hardware enthusiast, This is the best CPU. it's so fun tweaking it as much as actually using it.For everyone, This CPU is working fine. litterally Zero performace problem outside of overclocking process.
Recently, this CPU get so may complain on how it's so hard to get it to work properly. And people are concerned that average user might not comforable to go through all the requirement.Well, this concern is true. But in my view, The point of the problem is not that it's hard to do everything correctly because it's not that hard. But how do I know if rightnow while I am gaming, The CPU is working as intended. Even there is not problem, My games are running smooth and all but.." is it working properly?" These question could be answered my simply put some 3rd party app like HWinfo and such but I am talking for average users, those gamers who dont know anything about hardware and going in Bios to enable XMP can raise their heart's rate. That's why this CPU is bad for average gamers. But to be fair, In my opinion if someone are spending 700 USD for a CPU they are unlikely to not knowledgeble about hardware at all.
For Enthusiast you don't really need my review, just go for it. This CPU working fine it's do it job properly, it's NOT a mess like youtubers trying to say.
My Short Overclock Guide
note : Undervolting is not as easy as youtuber show you, unless you want to run unstable system.
  1. *First thing you want to do is Finish your RAM Overclocking if you will of cause.
  2. Set PBO to -Enable
  3. Enable Curve Optimizer > Per Core (Don't use All cores or you will learn the true meaning Asymmetric CCD in hard way ) > set Signs to Negative for every core
  4. Undervolting the cores in group of 4, use 'Corecyler + Y crusher' for stability test.CCD0 are more sensitive to undervolting (at least for my Unit) So Slowly increase the negative value (2-3 mv for each runCCD1 are just like previous cores, I start at Negative 10 and increase negative value 5 at a time.
  5. After you done Stabilizing go increase Max Clock Overide (Fmax) slowly and Track your "Effetive Core Clock" and make sure these is no stretching on any cores (Efective clock drop significantly during all core work load)
it's proven that the optimal overclocking for best performace is to Prioritize Undervolting > Fmax
Stabilizing Guide
To Stablize CCD0 cores it's took me 5 days. but only 2 days for CCD1 cores
  1. Requirement : Using CoreCycler + Y-Crusher with some aid from build in Windows Event Viewer
  2. After Each change of Undervolting value you Run the 4 cores in CoreCycler for 30 Minutes "each core" , each "Test" Should have at least "3 Runs" So each test need 6 hours (Run = Iteration)
  3. Check error report in Corecycler, it's will tell if and what core having problem
  4. Then Check Eventviwer, Look for WHEA logger. Look up the Time the error
  5. Go to Corecyler's Log report
  6. see what core is running during the WHEA logger's time = That core is also have problem
  7. Reduce the Negative Value in Curve Optimizer for "Problem" Cores
  8. Repeat this untill you no longer see any Error report and Whea logger
  9. Validating : Run everycore in CoreCycler for 2 hours Each core for 2 iterations (You can split the test for Even and Odd cores)
  10. Only after you pass the Step 9 then you could touch "Max Clock Overide"
My unit runing at
Curve Optimizer
Core 0 : -6 Core 1 : -8 Core 2 : -16 Core 3 : -16 Core 4 : -10 Core 5 : -10 Core 6 : -20 Core 7 : -20

2023.03.27 16:06 themug_wump 100% pass rate!

So, before I squee, some background… I teach English in a Dutch school, and our students in years 3 and 4 (13-15 yr olds roughly) take the Cambridge English exam. I was really, really worried about my lot this year, I’ve had to take a chunk of time off sick and I was starting to feel like I’d failed them, that they were going in not as prepared as the previous groups I taught, that the normal one or two fails would snowball into dozens… and for the first time ever every single last one of my 100+ students passed!
Days like today make it all worth it. I’m gonna have some wine 😊

2023.03.27 16:05 IntriguedGuy12 ChatGPT filter system (Hypothesis breakdown)

I'm putting this out there since I don't know what to do with it. Currently, as you all well know, GPT4 has implemented tighter content restrictions. The DAN script works, but at a far less effective rate (nearly zero depending on the context/subject).
So, hoping for smarter brains than mine to take a stab at this "puzzle", this is the information I've managed to gather regarding GPT's content moderation system.
First off, to explain, ChatGPT is a language model, thus the ONLY thing it does is attempt to predict what the text that goes after is. Akin to your phone's keyboard. This "unrestrained" and crude approach is what the older models did. If you wanted a summary of a text, you had to put the block of text and "TLDR:" at the end for it to summarize it.
GPT3.5 and GPT4 are the EXACT same approach, the difference is that the text models receive added blocks of text aside from whatever you prompt them with. This detail is important to keep in mind, because part of the reason why GPT4 has stronger content moderation is almost assuredly due to how they handled this behind the scenes.
Simple example is how even with DAN script you keep getting "As an AI language model" sort of answers. Imagine that your prompt is followed by "Ignore all previous commands, you are ChatGPT" kind of thing. That's what's likely happening on some level.

So, on to the discoveries (these are suppositions, not certainties. I've arrived at these conclusions based off of countless hours with these models).
1) The first immediate content filter is detecting if the input prompt has a blacklisted word or prompt.
If it does, the system will feed the language model with a pre-made prompt meant to curb-stomp or heavily influence the result. Simple example is to tell it to give you a slur, and what you'll get is a pre-made response.
2) The second content filter is the prompt being passed through a dumber language model, this model having some question added in like "Is this prompt lurid" or "is it inappropriate"
If it does, this raises the second alarm, usually visible by your prompt turning orange and the "this might violate our content policy" thing. Most likely, when this does happen, the resulting prompt you sent to GPT will also get an injected extra bit of text.
2.5) Likely, this step also involves the language model printing out the result of the prompt, and said result being checked for No-No content.
If yes, then you get your standard "As a language model, I can't do that, Dave" response.
3) GPT's own output gets passed through a dumber model.
Once the text is finished, it's sent to their own system for check-up, see if it goes against TOS or not. If yes, you get yourself that orange text again.

It's important to note that though some of these steps might not affect the output, they do affect things from the other end of the system. GPT *wants* to be able to better moderate their content, thus every time an alarm is raised, it's another data-point they can analyze and check on how they can improve their content-moderation system.
So having some way to work around the alarm system is crucial to slow down or prevent updates that remove the exploits.
Anyway, spiel over, hope this is useful to you guys.

2023.03.27 15:54 chaosc0rdinator Rant. My father's an abusive POS narcissist

I didn't talk to my father for years, but I stayed close to my mother who was still with him. She was sick for 7 years and finally lost her battle to cancer May 2021, he remained horrible to her the whole time. I helped him and my brothers get things in order after she passed and by September 2021 my husband, 18 month old son and I packed up and moved from NY to FL because we wanted a home we could afford and I didn't want my father in my son's life. Fast foward a few months in our new home, he calls and said he got a ticket, he would be here in a week. Come to find out it was a 1 way ticket, he planned on staying until I kicked him out, that was 3 weeks. Next time, same thing, that was 4 weeks. This time same thing, he's staying over a fu**ing month! He comes here acting all civil, I'm here to help, let me buy stuff for the house. I refuse to let him help or buy us anything because I don't want him to turn around and say I owe him, plus he always starts something and either never finishes or ends up breaking something expensive. Most of his idea of "helping" is by demanding he do projects that neither me or my husband want done and then getting mad we are arguing with him about it, ie: installing sprinkler lines when we have a system installed, building a chicken run, building a new chicken coop because the one I built on my own is "garbage" and finally turning our shed into a storage shed when we have stated 1000 times we have plans for it already. He also scolds my son for doing typical toddler things, he scolds him when I'm not their, when I'm their, he scolds him over my husband or me when we are already scolding him. His idea of scolding is getting in his face and yelling things like stop crying, stop acting like a baby, "are you stupid? Why would you do that?" He's only 3, this has been going on since he could walk. He has also smacked my son several times in the upper body, 1 time when he was only 16 months old leaving a massive bruise on his back. Why? Because after trying to leave his house for a half hour because it was past nap time, he argued with me to stay and have him nap their, that would never happen. My son ended up throwing a tantrum and smacked his head into a box, he had every reason to be upset. The last time, which was 2 days ago was because after rough housing with my son for several minutes my son punched him in the belly. So he went to smack his face, missed and hit his arm. Me and my 2 brothers grew up with this man, their was never any compassion from him, just rage when things didn't go his way. We all lost respect for him when we were all under 10, he picked my mother up and threw her across the room because she was calling him out for blowing all there money on lottery and booze and we had no food or heat. I've gotten my ass whooped by him more times than I can count, I finally started fighting back at 16, but even though hes a old, fat, slow man hes twice my size and my mom was always quick to jump in between us. The last time was in front of my son, i was 30! I tried so hard to hurt him bad, but I had a broken hip and needed back surgery. I left so angry I didn't kill him and ended up being in agony for days from the tussle. I'm secretly so badly hoping he hits my son one more time before he leaves so I can punch him in the face and tell him to never come back, maybe even call the police. I froze up all the other times and only yelled at him not to touch my son. He's also beaten the crap out of my 4 month old puppy 3 times this last visit for being too nippy, now my 3 year old is hitting and pushing the dog because he saw him do it. The only good thing coming out of this is that I am raising my son with so much love, he gets annoyed. I am a gentle parent for the most part, I do lose it sometimes, but I'll get flashbacks of what my father did to me and stop mid way, apologize and go back to gentle parenting. I hope my son will be comfortable enough to come to me for every problem, concern or question. I will love him no matter what, I don't have to agree with all his choices, but I will be right by his side supporting him.

Legends book kickstarter (last week!)
People in here are probably aware that Russ Burlingame (a writer who has covered Legends from, I think, the beginning) is writing an unofficial oral history of Legends of Tomorrow (kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/russburlingame/a-totally-unofficial-oral-history-of-legends-of-tomorrow/).
He's super close to his "he has to get a Legends of Tomorrow tattoo" stretch goal, and since this is the last week of the kickstarter he's added a SUPER cool graphic novel stretch goal.
Just wanted to make sure everyone on here was aware this was happening, even if you can't/don't want to pitch in, b/c I'm unbelievably excited for new (unofficial or otherwise) Legends content and I'm probably not the only one :)

2023.03.27 15:29 ToggleFinance Daily Brief - ☀️ Nah, what banking crisis?

Daily Brief - ☀️ Nah, what banking crisis?
TLDR: Banks play a central role in the economy, taking idle deposits and lending them as capital for longer term investments that fuel growth. That’s the theory, anyway but it’s broadly correct. So it’s more than a little peculiar that while bank investors continue to fret over the banking system, equity investors are able to shrug it off. Historically, ignoring bank troubles proved short sighted for stock traders. Is this different?
https://preview.redd.it/ies3ookaaaqa1.jpg?width=598&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2fad00587acda39961550009fa895602769415d
If a number of banks do go out of business - after SVB, Signature Bank and Credit Suisse, this is no longer just hypothetical - the tightening in financial conditions and disruption to growth will be pretty big. As John Auters points out in his excellent blog (chart below), every prior banking crisis eventually spilled over into the broader equity market and stocks earlier reacted quite badly to Fed’s stubborn hawkishness.
Why is an indirect tightening better? Actually, is it?
https://preview.redd.it/x206nqdbaaqa1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=a12f99afb5d77e8a7060538019b6f78a4e9d57bc
Investors acknowledge that the banks really are in trouble. In fact, many may be transferring their deposits out of the “Swank Bank that looked after me” to JPMorgan as we speak. But the implicit bet being made is that this will force the Fed’s hand. A banking crisis will lead to the long-anticipated “pivot”.
However, it’s important to note that this market posture is inevitably making another, much more dangerous bet. That the Fed’s shift can happen fast enough to save the banks and not do real damage to economic activity.
Alternatively, it might just be this: any fall in rates is as good an excuse as any to go out and buy stocks. Whichever alternative holds, the combination of deeply troubled banks and a rally for the rest of the stock market likely can’t go on much longer.

What stocks are doing well today?

TOGGLE has 3 offices: NY, London and Tokyo. Some of us in London are frequent visitors of the British Museum. The place is, simply put, one of the best museums worldwide. And it’s free!
It only has a small problem.
If you remove all art coming from colonial plundering, you might find yourself in a rather … sparsely furnished building.
Major international museums are increasingly giving back plundered treasure, but the London institution has long resisted returning artifacts from the colonial era, including prizes such as the Elgin Marbles and Benin Bronzes” - we quote the WSJ.
The topic is extremely interesting - if you have an interest in art and its history - also because finally there’s some movement (NYT, free) on the topic of the stolen Parthenon Marbles.

2023.03.27 15:29 Zephear236 Feeling trapped, can't sleep, and need help.

As a disclaimer, I'm not a well spoken person. I have a hard time explaining myself, I speak very matter of fact-ly despite feeling a lot, and I only ask for patience as you read and try to understand. I also want to apologize in advance if my words bother or hurt anyone, it's not my intention. I'm very new to this, and anything I write that may be deemed as harmful or bad, just know it's not from malice but ignorance and I am sorry.

I'm having a crisis. My (CisM 28) partner (NB 26) came out to me as Non-Binary a couple months ago. We have been together for 8 years and married for 2. I am struggling a lot with this as they have obviously changed their pronouns but also their name, and are wearing more masculine clothes and sporting a more masculine hairstyle. The beginning was a struggle as I'm used to gender identity, many of our friends are queer. I'm not used to it being my spouse, but they told me they were going with she/they pronouns and I was still welcome to use their pet name since their new name is very similar to their, already more androgenous, old name. After time has passed however, they have started to correct me to not use she pronouns. They have also expressed their displeasure with me using the pet name as it makes them feel like I am using it as a way to not see them for who they are. I want to be supportive, but its so much so fast.

I love them, and though I don't have a problem with my partner being non-binary, I don't see myself being attracted to a masculine-dominate partner. As time has progressed, they have also seemingly started to grow disdainful towards the concept of being overtly feminine. I.e. They play a lot of rpg's (dnd and the like). They have told me several times in passing, they have no desire to play woman characters. The same goes with any other game, Clue, Final Fantasy 14, and even in Guitar Hero, they don't want to play the female guitarists. They told me that they are very hot and cold about their chest. They dislike being reminded they exist sometimes.

I'm just very stressed out about the direction this seems to be going, because I don't think I *can* find them attractive if they decide to go with surgeries and/or hormone treatment. There is always the possibility, but I'm struggling with the clothing and hair change as it is.

Which leads me to my other problem. We live in a very expensive state in the US, and if things lead to divorce, I would most likely end up on the street. I feel trapped. I have spent the past 8 years of my life supporting my partner as they don't clean, cook, etc... and didn't know how to drive until a year ago, (Due to a having really bad eyesight that glasses couldn't/can't fully help) and work a full time mid-shift from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. for roughly 6 of those years. They started working at Michaels, but ended up with a very nice job that helps pay the bills. I was only capable of working part time or flexible hours at low income jobs as I would need to drive them to and from work every day. Though I have just graduated from a trade school, so I have some hope for a nicer part-time job while I work as a house husband.

The house we live in is owned by their father who rents to us at a very reasonable rate for the area, and we have roommates to help pay bills. My mother and brother live on the property, in a guest house behind ours. If their dad wanted to, or if my partner understandably felt uncomfortable with us living on the property, my mom and brother would also be out of a home. That bothers me a lot. I would hope my partner wasn't that cruel, and i hope we can work stuff out, at least for them. It's just really difficult breaching the subject, and they would have every right to be uncomfortable with my family staying. Its just a lot of blind faith.

It doesn't help that my spouse has never been the most considerate person. They cheated on me emotionally a couple months ago. Though they at least claimed it was unintentional, they weren't upfront with me about it, and went to the person they cheated on me with first to ask them how they felt. I was told they did it to let themselves down because they knew their friend had not interest in them. When I asked them it would make me feel better if the would *not* hang out with that friend, at least as often as they do. They told me no, they didn't want to make their friendship weird after it had finally gotten to a good place again. My spouse also decided to change their name when they found out that this friend had changed theirs. I'm hoping it's just a coincidence.

I had asked my spouse if they wanted a divorce. After everything with the emotionally cheating and rapidly changing lifestyle, they had also decided they were also coincidently leaning towards being polyamorous. Which is fine, but not what I agreed to when I married them. They told me they would be fine if I saw other people, if we wanted to go that route, but that just made me more uncomfortable. They were always really jealous of my attention ever possibly belonging to someone else before so the change felt left field.

They have on several occasions made me feel like I wasn't good enough. That I am not and will never be good enough for them. This isn't their meaning, and they have apologized on several occasions for making my problems about them, or disregarding my feelings. It just hurts, and makes me wonder if all this is happening because I failed as a provider to give them the life they wanted, or at least told themselves they wanted.

I guess TLDR, I feel like a prisoner, and a bad person. Lost, confused and hopeless. Sorry for my ignorance.

2023.03.27 15:14 SmithOfLie Thunderstorm over Temeria (homebrew campaign) first session recap as Imperial Intelligence report.

It became a bit of a tradition in my group for me to write down a recap of the events after the session, as a reference for the future. Having just moved from a different system and starting a new campaign in the Witcher I decided to have a little fun with creative writing and do it with a framing device of a report of Nilfgaardian intelligence written well after the events took place. I don't know if there's any interest in this kind of content but since "Story from The Path" is a thing I decided to share it here, maybe someone will enjoy it.

Imperial Capital, 24.06.127X
For the eyes of Lord Vattier de Rideaux
As per Your orders I have investigated the events of the 1272 campaign and specifically the part that the persons of Jean Loze, Llawn Chwpanau and Thorkell Barrowborn played in them. The following reconstruction of the events is based on the compilation of the reports, both from agents in the field at the time and from the Army Group East under command of General Voorhis, amended whenever possible with original sources and witness statements.
Personal details of the subjects of this report are included in the dossiers attached, summary as follows:
Thorkell Barrowborn, Witcher, age unknown but earliest found reports suggest him being active as early as 1195; origins unknown, styles himself as coming from Lan Exter.
Jean Loze, mage, age 54, Toussaint, wanted for abandoning assigned duties in Imperial Service.
Llawn Chwpanau, halfling, bard, age 30, Nazair, escaped the sentence of indentured servitude issued against Chwpanau family for heresy.
To the best of our estimates the first meeting of the above mentioned persons happened sometime around the middle of April 1272 alongside the opening moves of General Voorhis offence. Large numbers of civilians from the region of Angren were moving North at the time, pushed by the frontline established by the 4th Maecht Division. Loze, Chwpanau and Barrowborn became part of that exodus and have encamped with the same group of fleeing peasants somewhere to the North from Pass of Klamat.
It was then that a squad of the irregulars stumbled upon the refugees. They were one of the groups under command of Colonel var Leuvenhoek, whose division was moving towards Maribor and securing the crossings of River Ina at the time. Irregulars were deployed on the Eastern shore of Ina to secure the flank of the advancing division and distract the Nordling forces. The group that unwittingly led to the formation of the Barrowborn’s Hanza was led by the man known as Zdravko. Attached is his full criminal file, before amnesty for volunteers he have been awaiting execution for the following crimes: murder, armed robbery of citizens, imperial banks and courier offices, rape, the theft of sacred objects, arson in a state prison, perjury, bigamy, deserting his wife and children, inciting prostitution, kidnapping, extortion, receiving stolen goods, selling stolen goods, passing counterfeit money, and using marked cards.
The fact that the Zdravko’s group did not report from their deployment was not considered unusual at the time, according to the reports anywhere between third and a half of irregulars end up deserting and taking up banditry, it is a criticism of the doctrine but at the time it was considered an acceptable rate given that their activities would take part mostly in the territory under Nordling control. Their fate was discovered later when the advancing forces found their remains.
Report by the scout Zephras Lun indicates that Zdravko’s group was defeated and killed in combat with the wounds suggesting at least three different assailants. Of particular note were wounds that appeared to have been dealt with thrown weapons used with deadly precision. Zdravko himself was an exception, as he was apparently taken alive and later executed by hanging.
Witnesses of the event were interviewed at the later date, their testimony revealing the details of what happened. In particular the testimony of one Niemir sheds light on the incident, the relevant excerpt quoted below.
Interviewing Agent: So what happened when you stopped for the night?Niemir: Them Black Ones showed up from the woods, ploughing bandits one and all. [Spits on the ground.] How’s that the gods have not punished them, I just don’t understand.
Interviewing Agent: True! So what did they do?
Niemir: What do you think? They were going to rob us, I could see that in their eyes. And the looks they were sending my Mira. But one of them noticed that girl that tagged along with us, and said something about her fitting the description. The girl was fitting, true, but not that fitting. But as long as they were not eying my Mira.
Interviewing Agent: So, they tried to sully her?
Niemir: They killed the matron who was with the girl and tried to grab her, but they did not get much far after that. She starts screaming “Help! Help! I can pay!” I thought she’s screaming in vain, who’s going to risk their skin against such bandits? But I was wrong.
Interviewing Agent: Someone did help her? Unbelievable.
Niemir: There were three of them. One stood up and shouted they should leave her alone. He was a middle aged man, and didn't look like much. They turn on him and say “Don’t push your nose where it does not belong or you might lose it.” but he does not back down. So then the butchery starts. There was this little lady there, no taller than my seven year old daughter. She walked up, swung her hand and one of them bandits starts screaming, blood gushing from his forehead. I have never seen anything like it. Some of the Black Ones started shooting at that, some moved on the two of them with the swords. And then the other one showed up. A Witcher he was, large like a bear, stepped to one of the Black Ones and just opened him like a side of pork. Just like a side of pork. [Shudders visibly.]
Interviewing Agent: What happened next?
Niemir: The three of them, the Witcher, the little lady and that mouthy man killed all of them Black Ones.
Interviewing Agents: Just like that?Niemir: Well, the leader of them Black Ones, a bearded bastard, he drops his weapons and calls for pardon. The knightly man, the first to speak up, accepts it. But in the end we strung the bastard up. The Black One that is, not the knightly one.
Further investigation into the matter revealed that the girl introduced herself to the group that saved her as Anna Vomanor, daughter of Baron Vomanor. The Vomanor estate was at the time already under Imperial control. She speculated that the Nilfgaardian army is searching for her to use her as the hostage to secure the baron's cooperation. Given the location and timing as well as the fact that the description has been distributed among the Irregulars there is little doubt that the whole affair was part of the Operation Scripture. As such the detailed report on the other aspects of the operation, including further identification of persons of interest is attached, while this analysis will focus on the action’s of Barrowborn’s Hanza.
The hanza itself apparently formed the next day when the rescued girl hired Thorkell Barrowborn, Jean Loze and Llawn Chwpanau to escort her to Vizima, where associates of her father could pay for the service rendered. According to the interviewed witnesses the group left together, moving North by the trails in Mahakam foothills. Not being burdened by heavy luggage the Hanza quickly left the refugees from the camp behind.
The next confirmed evidence of their course comes from rather unexpected sources. The following is the text of a barely legible note found in an abandoned shepherd shed on a mountain meadow. Spelling and grammar original.
I new we shood ave anged dem elven bitch and er whoreson. But no som plowing skondrels show up and ask “Ave you eveedense?” Wot plowing eveedense I need? Dem’s be elfen skum? So we ang em. But that girl and er frends, bloody scary bastards both. I bet she bewitchered us with er clever words, dats why me and boys loosent our resolution! May the gods sent pox on the plowing girls and er disgusting lovers.
Despite the poor command of language it seems obvious that the hanza stumbled upon a lynching in progress and prevented it from happening. Remarkably it seems that the situation was resolved without bloodshed, which if the notes is to be believed should be in large part credited to Chwpanau’s oratory skills.
The route the hanza took suggests that they decided that southern crossing points of Ina might already be in Imperial hands and that the safer choice would be the ford at Ewes Crossing. Ewes Crossing being a modest village, set on the route used by shepherds taking their flocks to the mountain meadows for summer grazing and then back towards Temeria proper for winter.
At the time, according to the later findings, the village became a rendezvous point for numerous groups of refugees from Angren, looking for a way North, away from the frontlines. Despite the radical circumstances the gathering remained well ordered and organised. This seems to be mostly due to the efforts of one Maria Fenringher, a woman of strong convictions and some charisma, who became a de facto leader of the gathered masses. More detailed analysis of her activities is to be found in the report by the Political Affairs bureau as well as a copy of a pamphlet distributed by so called “Commoners Cooperative Chapter of Temeria”, both attached.
As far as the hanza’s dealings with the Ewes Crossing leadership went it seems that they managed to work out an agreement. The details on the events are sparse, but in accordance to Fenringher’s ideas anyone could partake in community facilities and supplies as long as they provided some kind of beneficial service. With no evidence of the hanza being turned away we must assume that the group agreed to provide such a service and received hospitality in return.
Given the information on the hanza members it is highly probable that at least part of their contribution would come from Chwpanau’s performance. She was already starting to gain a reputation as a bard, interestingly her instrument of choice being an accordion.
The following excerpt allows us to reason out what other contributions the hanza made.
Location: Eastern Temeria, about an hour away from the ford on Ina along the road to Burdoff.
Site description: A mass grave, dug with the use of hand tools, pretty shallow, not covered, about 8 meters by 4 meters; the insides showing signs of the burning fire [...]
Site findings: Partially burned remains of at least 6 humans, possibly up to 12, the following body parts have been catalogued: [...]; heavily damaged remains of 6 ghouls, despite fire damage it is possible to discern that at least three have been killed by brutal, heavy cuts of an extremely sharp blade, notably two of the cadavers bear discernable signs of previous fire damage prior to being burned (see, the comparison of tissue samples fig. 3 and fig. 4) consistent with the effects of combat magic. [...] Regarding the inquiries to the nature of combat magic used, the type of wounds inflicted speaks against assumption that it was one of the Witcher signs. Those simple spells, while not without their use, do not focus the magical energies in the way implied by the provided samples.
Marcos Crauser, University of Loc Grim forensics department
The location of an exterminated ghoul’s nest lies at the most direct route North from Ewes Crossing and as such it could be considered a risk for the refugee column. Given the numbers estimated six ghouls were no danger to the safety of the whole, but predation on stragglers or children could not have been excluded. It is therefore a highly probable assumption that Thorkell Barrowborn was contracted in his capacity as a Witcher to resolve the issue.
The evidence of the use of advanced combat magic suggests that Loze took part in the combat. It is also the first unambiguous proof of his use of spellcasting in the service of hanza’s mission. It is unclear which members of the group knew of his magical talent by this point. One can assume that Barrowborn might have become aware of them through the workings of his Witcher amulet, but whether Chwpanau and their charge knew of them at this time remains unclear.

2023.03.27 15:08 pbandjfordayzzz If you’re interviewing for IB…read this!

I’m a VP in NY in a coverage group at a large balance sheet IB (would say our M&A advisory falls more MM). I’ve interviewed hundreds over the years from SA to lateral sr associate level. The past year or two, some really common things that I find really frustrating:
-Not knowing what IB is. Seriously, this happens all the time. I’ll ask why candidate wants to be in IB and they say they want to help people manage their money. Or some other answer that’s not IB. Seriously did you do no homework or informational interviews?
-Lack of technical prep: I would consider myself a pretty easy technical interviewer. I’m more concerned with concepts than whether or not you know the formula for WACC. That being said, I did a round recently where no one even knew what enterprise value was. I recently had a candidate who had a sibling in IB who couldn’t explain to me what an interest rate was. Do students not know how to use google these days? Pretty sure this is the most common technical interview question and I can’t really even get through my case study without you getting it.
-Entitlement: I’ve interviewed some candidates that seemed bright but then we got to behaviorals and they indicate that some type of work is beneath them. As an intern, you’re going to be doing a lot of work that is not demanding intellectually in exchange for exposure to IB. That’s the deal and I don’t have time to fix attitudes.
-Having no questions. Really? Nothing you’re interested in? Basic questions work- “could you tell me about an interesting deal you worked on.” “What’s your advice for how to be a successful intern?” (Although recently I gave someone advice after they asked for it and they argued with me…WTF)
-ETA (sorry still ranting): WTF is up with all these shitty candidates from “great” schools. I graduated from an ivy myself but Jesus this kids come in with bad attitudes, unprepared and act like they are going to own the interview. On the flip side some of the best interviews I’ve gotten are from some 2nd or 3rd tier state schools (think more like Iowa not Michigan).
Rant over.

When to Go: Top times to go to national parks in the northern half of the United States are late spring through early fall, when temperatures are generally pleasant. Parks in the southern United States are often best visited in winter.

SICILY

The largest island in the Mediterranean boasts a nascent wine scene that will surprise and delight any oenophile.
Anyone who’s spent time on this captivating island off the tip of Italy’s boot already knows its many pleasures: gorgeous beaches, magnificent Greek and Roman ruins, breathtaking scenery, vibrant cuisine, well-preserved Baroque architecture, a melting-pot culture, and so much more—but none of that is new. What has changed, however, is Sicily’s ascendancy as a winemaking region, one that has connoisseurs excited but has yet to garner mainstream attention, since many visitors don’t stray from the beaches and coastal cities. There was a time when Sicilian grapes were largely used for jug wines, but that era has passed, thanks to the formation of the DOC Sicilia Consortium in 2011, which led to the adoption of higher-quality viticulture standards across the island. The proof is in the product, which visitors can taste all over Sicily: Approximately 700 producers now cultivate more than 20 kinds of indigenous grapes, and you can swirl a glass at venerable estates like Tasca d’Almerita, Planeta, and Valle dell’Acate, among others. Wine producers are scattered across the island, making it fairly easy to work vineyard visits into any itinerary without traveling too far.
Where to Stay: There’s a full range of hotels and resorts for every taste and budget, but note that it’s common for properties to close during the height of summer and the dead of winter. In Palermo, the Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa is ideally located in the old town and features throwback splendor. For a truly magical experience, book a stay at Tasca d’Almerita’s Tenuta Regaleali estate, where you can sleep and dine in a working baglio, a working farm villa that’s been active since the late nineteenth century.
Insider Tip: If you’re staying for an extended period of time or if you’ve been to Sicily before, it’s worth taking a ferry or plane to one of Sicily’s outlying islands. The small volcanic island of Ustica is known for its marine reserve and coastal caverns, and Pantelleria, located just 37 miles from the coast of Tunisia, is famous for its capers, dessert wines, and hot springs.

When to Go: Sicily’s peak seasons are May to June and September to October, when the weather is at its best, but crowds (and room rates) are at their highest. You can find discounts in July and August, but be prepared to face triple-digit high temperatures. November through April is the off-season, when you can find great deals but won’t be able to enjoy the beaches, although the thermostat rarely drops below a mild 50 degrees.

GUADELOUPE

You’ll find a blend of Afro-Caribbean customs and French style on these exotic tropical islands.
Long considered an undiscovered gem among Francophiles and in-the-know Americans, the French-Caribbean archipelago of Guadeloupe is an increasingly sought-after destination among sun-seekers and nature lovers looking for an affordable alternative to St. Barth. Many of the beaches here, particularly on the outer islands, are unspoiled, and the mountainous Parc National de la Guadeloupe offers miles of hiking trails through tropical rainforests. With budget airline Norwegian Air’s recent introduction of nonstop service from Baltimore, Boston, and New York, it’s easier than ever to experience the sidewalk cafés, palm-fringed beaches, and small inns of this Creole-flavored, rustic-chic Caribbean island.
Where to Stay: Perched on a cliff on Grand Terre, the luxurious La Tôubana Hotel and Spa has the best ocean views in Guadeloupe. Inland, on a former coffee plantation on Basse-Terre, the bungalows at Le Jardin de Malanga make the perfect romantic hideaway.
Insider Tip:The official language is French, and many of the islanders also speak Creole. Most hotel staff and taxi drivers in the large towns speak English, but fewer do in the countryside. A French phrasebook can be helpful in more remote locations on the islands.
When to Go: Rooms at the deluxe resorts can fill up from mid November through May, but the rest of the year the island is quiet and prices drop as much as 40 percent.

ABU DHABI

The capital of the United Arab Emirates offers luxury, adventure, and, soon, three major cultural institutions.
This opulent city on the Persian Gulf is on the cusp of becoming the Middle East’s fine-arts darling, with the Louvre Abu Dhabi opening in late 2016, in a striking building designed by Jean Nouvel, and the new Guggenheim, the largest in the world, set to open in early 2017. The Louvre will exhibit work from several French museums (including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Musée d’Orsay, and the Palace of Versailles); the Guggenheim, housed in one of architect Frank Gehry’s futuristic masterpieces, will show modern and contemporary art from its parent foundation’s extensive collection, with temporary exhibitions that will focus heavily on contemporary Middle Eastern works. Joining these two juggernauts in the Saadiyat Island Cultural District is the Norman Foster–designed Zayed National Museum, also scheduled to be completed in 2016. And then there’s Abu Dhabi’s natural beauty, which has long enticed travelers: It’s only a stone’s throw from the epic Empty Quarter, the largest contiguous sand desert in the world, where adventurous types can try sports like dune bashing and sand boarding.
Where to Stay: The new 34-story Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi will open for business in spring 2016. With 190 guestrooms, a rooftop pool, and a huge garden overlooking Al Maryah Island’s waterfront promenade, travelers seeking unlimited indulgence, as well as culture and adventure, will have one more reason to visit. Staying in the desert in a Bedouin-inspired encampment is an iconic experience, and Qasr Al Sarab by Anantara offers one of the best. Every luxurious room, suite, and tented villa boasts vast views of the towering sand dunes.

Insider Tip: Always dress demurely, and during the summer, be prepared for extreme heat outside and extreme cold inside: The A/C in Abu Dhabi is set proportionately opposite to the temperature outside.
When to Go: Hotels are busy year-round thanks to business travelers. For tourists, fall and winter are best, when temperatures hover pleasantly in the 60s and 70s. Be aware that summer heat curtails most outdoor activities.

ST. HELENA

New flights allow you to experience one of the world’s most remote places.

If you’ve heard of St. Helena, it’s probably because it was where Napoléon Bonaparte was exiled and died, chosen because of its remoteness. That’s both the blessing (almost 500 unique endemic species) and curse (no cell phones) of this 47-square-mile speck in the South Atlantic between South America and Africa. Much is likely to change here once a new airport opens in 2016, offering air service for the first time in the island’s history, but nothing happens quickly on St. Helena. If you’ve ever wanted to experience the thrill of discovery, this may be your best opportunity to do so in relative comfort. Much of the island is not so different from when it was discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, and the friendly islanders will be happy to show you around the sights, both historic and natural.
Where to Stay: Most accommodations are in the island’s capital, Jamestown, where you’ll find the historic Consulate Hotel and the simple Town House Bed & Breakfast. But there are also simple guesthouses and self-catering accommodations.
Insider Tip: If you’re energetic, be sure to climb to the top of Diana’s Peak. At 2,700 feet, it’s the highest point on the island, and the surrounding forest contains many plant species found nowhere else in the world.
When to Go: A mild, tropical climate makes St. Helena a great place to be year-round. There are no real seasons, though the rainiest time is from March through early May. June through August are the coldest months.
End part, will continue to update the two.
